[00:00:32.197]This semester, we're collaborating with the
[00:00:34.643]Lincoln Children’s Museum to design the
[00:00:37.553]science lessons that directly relate to
[00:00:40.813]the exhibits that are here at the museum.
[00:00:43.993]Our model at the Children's Museum
[00:00:46.153]is learning through the power of play.
[00:00:49.233]and I think that that connects a lot what
[00:00:51.473]we're doing with science.
[00:00:53.090]What we're learning a lot of is the hands-on
[00:00:55.590]experiences are going to get you the most
[00:00:58.000]meaningful learning experiences and also
[00:01:00.370]allow students to engage more.
[00:01:02.780]So I think what we're doing here relates
[00:01:05.180]a lot to that. We have all these experiments
[00:01:07.710]that gets kids hands-on and then we can
[00:01:10.080]take it to a further level of getting them
[00:01:13.730]to think why these things are happening
[00:01:16.120]and getting them to that higher level
[00:01:18.170]thinking.
[00:01:19.570]Instead of just telling them
[00:01:21.190]this is what’s going to happen,
[00:01:22.960]this is what you should learn from
[00:01:24.920]the experiment and lesson,
[00:01:26.200]this is what you need to know--
[00:01:27.820]they’re actually finding that out for
[00:01:29.890]themselves by doing experiments themselves,
[00:01:32.060]So what's happening, what are we seeing?
[00:01:34.137]It's raining because it couldn't hold
[00:01:36.157]up that much pressure.
[00:01:37.697]What couldn't hold up pressure?
[00:01:39.557]Clouds.
[00:01:40.307]Science is really all around us
[00:01:41.957]and usually most people don't think of it
[00:01:44.267]that way. I didn’t either until this class.
[00:01:47.237]I normally thought of it as test tubes
[00:01:51.237]in a lab kind of thing. With this course
[00:01:55.237]I learned how it can be integrated into
[00:01:57.407]everything we do and everyday things
[00:01:59.577]that we do or that's around us.
[00:02:01.367]Kids are smarter than you think.
[00:02:03.187]We'd done our activity at home and
[00:02:07.187]he would say 'well you create a theory" and
[00:02:10.627]we tested it and he was able to provide
[00:02:12.977]a very detailed explanation of what it was.
[00:02:16.107]And he was correct, so it's really good to
[00:02:19.197]see how they go through the process of all
[00:02:23.197]that and really learn through the
[00:02:25.057]activities.
[00:02:26.377]Here's the big take away: Is that the teachers
[00:02:28.917]come in and they don't think that they can
[00:02:31.217]do it and then they build these fantastic
[00:02:33.427]activities. They get the children involved
[00:02:36.587]in the learning and then they realize
[00:02:38.747]themselves that they can do science.
[00:02:40.817]So the teacher learn they can do science,
[00:02:43.097]the children show they can do science
[00:02:45.357]and so everybody is winning. And that's
[00:02:47.567]the big take away, I would say, for this
[00:02:49.787]project--any project--is really getting
[00:02:51.967]them to understand that they can
[00:02:54.807]do science.
