- [00:00:00.382]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, ReadWorks.
- [00:00:03.653](funky digital music)
- [00:00:17.552]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:18.899]And today, we're gonna look at ReadWorks.
- [00:00:21.008]ReadWorks is a website that has
- [00:00:24.344]resources for teachers to help students that
- [00:00:27.282]need to get closer to reading levels,
- [00:00:30.146]or just to increase students' reading,
- [00:00:32.845]and it also provides lesson plans,
- [00:00:34.985]strategies, and some really awesome teacher resources
- [00:00:38.119]to help you plan lessons to help your students.
- [00:00:42.318]One of my favorite parts of it is Article-A-Day.
- [00:00:45.900]And Article-A-Day allows you to sort by your grade level,
- [00:00:51.562]by your lexile level, and even by topic.
- [00:00:55.412]And what you do is, so, if you're
- [00:00:57.488]teaching about a specific unit in class,
- [00:01:00.630]and maybe you want them to have some extended reading in it,
- [00:01:03.464]you can look at something like,
- [00:01:06.843]let's say we're doing ancient civilizations,
- [00:01:10.013]and I want them to focus more on ancient Egypt,
- [00:01:13.942]you can select
- [00:01:17.400]that reading,
- [00:01:19.784]and it will show you a series
- [00:01:24.316]of readings, and you can send them home with your students,
- [00:01:27.465]you can do them in class, you can maybe
- [00:01:29.796]have it where they read at home with their parents,
- [00:01:32.234]or they read aloud in class,
- [00:01:34.243]reading circles, kind of however you wanna run it,
- [00:01:37.986]but there's one each day,
- [00:01:39.751]and each one is about the same topic.
- [00:01:41.635]So they're getting some extension,
- [00:01:43.411]they're doing some reading at home,
- [00:01:45.203]and it can kind of be a fun
- [00:01:47.789]sort of activity for your students.
- [00:01:49.965]You can also go through and look at lessons.
- [00:01:52.015]And you can save them into your binder.
- [00:01:55.019]And I went ahead and saved a couple of different lessons
- [00:01:57.893]into my binder earlier, and...
- [00:02:03.126]So, one of 'em, it gives you passages.
- [00:02:05.945]So it'll give you the reading, and then some...
- [00:02:11.762]When it opens, there we go.
- [00:02:16.503]So it'll tell you a lot of information about it.
- [00:02:19.022]So this is for fifth grade.
- [00:02:20.459]It tells me the lexile level.
- [00:02:22.182]It's in technology and engineering.
- [00:02:23.649]So I'm looking at some science stuff.
- [00:02:26.311]And you go through and you do the reading,
- [00:02:30.017]and then, it gives some comprehension-type questions
- [00:02:33.493]at the end, but one of my favorite parts
- [00:02:35.336]is it'll show you where it aligns to the standards.
- [00:02:37.905]So you can find these readings, use these resources
- [00:02:40.545]in your classroom, and then you can see
- [00:02:42.216]which standards are being addressed
- [00:02:44.692]within the unit you choose.
- [00:02:46.854]They also have pretty and robust vocabulary sheets
- [00:02:51.617]for the key words within the text.
- [00:02:54.333]And so each one has its own document
- [00:02:57.729]that goes into further describing the word,
- [00:03:01.136]and then there's a worksheet that can help you
- [00:03:05.175]see that your students are understanding
- [00:03:08.931]the vocabulary words.
- [00:03:10.779]So the other thing that I saved was a unit.
- [00:03:13.630]And this is, so they don't provide you
- [00:03:17.919]the full book, but I was looking at Lone Star:
- [00:03:23.582]The Story of Amelia Earhart, 'cause I was
- [00:03:25.325]on a science kick when I was going through this stuff,
- [00:03:28.314]but it sets up different lessons for you.
- [00:03:30.649]And it talks about, how do you teach your students
- [00:03:33.563]the difference between a biography and an autobiography?
- [00:03:36.498]And then, Author's Opinion, Retelling a Life,
- [00:03:41.494]Events and Effects, and then, features of the text.
- [00:03:44.526]So, again, you go through the text
- [00:03:46.760]that you are already reading in your classroom,
- [00:03:50.327]and then, it gives you the resources to really sort of
- [00:03:53.728]enhance that experience for your students.
- [00:03:58.226]And, again, each of these lessons will show you
- [00:04:00.196]where it aligns to the standards.
- [00:04:02.931]'Cause I'm in Nebraska, I picked Nebraska,
- [00:04:05.037]but it'll do any state.
- [00:04:08.615]And, depending, if your school's using a
- [00:04:12.089]specific curriculum set, you can align it to that as well.
- [00:04:16.936]So, again, it has a lot of really interesting features.
- [00:04:21.075]You do have to set up an account.
- [00:04:22.530]It's not linked to Google, which was
- [00:04:24.615]one of the things for me that I was less excited about,
- [00:04:27.081]because I don't need another account somewhere.
- [00:04:29.707]But, when you do set up the account,
- [00:04:31.721]you're able to save your resources.
- [00:04:33.721]You can access things without the account,
- [00:04:35.493]but you can't save the things in one place
- [00:04:39.553]without it.
- [00:04:42.644]So, again, I would just encourage
- [00:04:44.441]teachers to go through and have a look at it.
- [00:04:47.508]I like that it has stuff for
- [00:04:50.416]basically any topic I can think of.
- [00:04:55.346]Basic things on writing, different content areas,
- [00:05:00.908]and the passages are all about different sorts of things,
- [00:05:04.350]so I can find history ones,
- [00:05:05.775]just going through really quickly.
- [00:05:07.646]Arts, sciences, sports and physical education.
- [00:05:12.995]And, again, it tells you what reading level it's at,
- [00:05:16.474]so you can assign ones to different groups.
- [00:05:19.641]So if you have reading groups in your class,
- [00:05:21.116]you can assign a different reading to a different group,
- [00:05:24.143]you can slowly scaffold them up throughout the semester,
- [00:05:28.672]and you can address certain skills and strategies,
- [00:05:34.062]depending on what you pick.
- [00:05:37.274]So, this is ReadWorks, and there is an extension
- [00:05:39.996]of ReadWorks that we'll look at in another video,
- [00:05:44.929]that has a teacher side and a student side
- [00:05:47.254]that really sort of enhances the...
- [00:05:51.568]The experience, but with this one, if you're just sort of
- [00:05:54.184](funky digital music) looking for some new content,
- [00:05:56.614]maybe some new ways to
- [00:05:58.805]integrate reading into different subject areas,
- [00:06:02.201]I definitely suggest you check it out.
- [00:06:04.314]So, I'm Zoe, and this has been
- [00:06:06.055]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
You can always jump over to MediaHub and check it out there.
