- [00:00:02.694]One of the features that I find really useful
- [00:00:04.908]in Canvas is the ability to create self sign up groups
- [00:00:09.106]that are really functional and easy to access for students.
- [00:00:12.516]The way in which you do this is when you come in to
- [00:00:15.137]the system you go under People, which is gonna be the
- [00:00:18.945]list of your students, you'll see everyone there.
- [00:00:22.155]And you can go to create a Group Set.
- [00:00:24.965]So when you create a Group Set you would just come up
- [00:00:28.853]with a group name, so Team Test is what I'll call this.
- [00:00:34.265]And you allow self sign up.
- [00:00:36.538]I'm gonna create five groups and I will limit
- [00:00:42.583]the number of students that can sign up to five.
- [00:00:47.927]And then I'll come down here and you can also automatically
- [00:00:51.989]assign a student group leader and set the first student
- [00:00:54.957]to join as a group leader and in doing that,
- [00:00:57.192]obviously it's a choice you have, but in doing that you
- [00:01:00.557]allow one person to be identified as responsible for
- [00:01:04.093]initiating the group's work.
- [00:01:06.866]So now you see I have this, all of my students names
- [00:01:10.465]are listed over here on the left hand side
- [00:01:13.383]and each of my teams are over on the right hand side.
- [00:01:17.830]When you come over here you can work through
- [00:01:21.077]and I can actually add these groups or these students myself
- [00:01:24.365]if I want to by dragging them over.
- [00:01:26.177]But what's cool about this is that we can also
- [00:01:29.579]have students go in and choose a group, so they can
- [00:01:32.410]look to see what group they want to join, self sign up
- [00:01:35.149]and when they populate in here, what it ends up looking like
- [00:01:38.867]is the ones that I currently have added.
- [00:01:42.543]So you'll have your Team Theory Group and you'll have
- [00:01:45.538]the students that have signed up for it there.
- [00:01:48.193]They can add themselves to the group in that way
- [00:01:50.465]and then they have access to all of the resources
- [00:01:53.924]and tools that you would see listed here.
- [00:01:57.907]So they can edit the group, do announcements,
- [00:01:59.851]they have pages, they can upload files
- [00:02:02.447]and while a lot of this is the same kind of functionality
- [00:02:05.562]in Black Board, students report in my experience would
- [00:02:08.641]suggest that these are much more accessible
- [00:02:12.162]and user friendly then what they experienced in working
- [00:02:16.084]in teams and groups in Black Board.
