- [00:00:00.588]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.539]GeoGuessr.
- [00:00:04.807](techno music)
- [00:00:17.358]Hi, I'm Zoe, and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:19.927]we're going to look at GeoGuessr.
- [00:00:22.714]So Geoguessr is a free app that allows you
- [00:00:27.517]to sort of play around with geography with your students.
- [00:00:31.065]It does allow you to log in with Google,
- [00:00:33.913]which again, all of my favorite apps
- [00:00:35.505]allow you to log in with an account you already have,
- [00:00:38.261]so we're gonna go ahead and sign up with Google.
- [00:00:44.844]And then we're gonna go
- [00:00:46.468]and we're gonna explore a little bit.
- [00:00:48.484]So you can do this in many different ways,
- [00:00:51.476]and there's so many different maps,
- [00:00:53.426]so you can target it towards your specific classroom
- [00:00:55.682]and you can also look at maps
- [00:00:57.603]that other teachers have made.
- [00:00:59.950]And you can look at things like
- [00:01:01.810]Famous Places All Over the World, Famous Places,
- [00:01:06.127]I'm thinking that's maybe just famous places in America,
- [00:01:09.306]and you can just do United States,
- [00:01:11.401]U.S. cities or the world.
- [00:01:13.653]So depending on your age that you're working with,
- [00:01:16.661]or if you're working on a specific unit
- [00:01:19.041]you can target it towards that.
- [00:01:21.310]Actually one of my students found this app
- [00:01:23.608]and was telling the class about it
- [00:01:25.136]and he was discussing the ways in which it could be used
- [00:01:28.320]as sort of an amendment to what you're already doing
- [00:01:31.940]or as maybe a game or a review or something,
- [00:01:35.358]you know, like bell work,
- [00:01:36.962]just to sort of start the students thinking.
- [00:01:39.986]So let's go ahead and look at Famous Places.
- [00:01:46.408]You can just play or you can do it as a challenge,
- [00:01:49.238]and if you look further down it shows you
- [00:01:51.004]all the different types of things
- [00:01:52.530]they already have set up.
- [00:01:55.645]Barbecue Sauce Factories,
- [00:01:59.067]Funny Maps, Places From Movies.
- [00:02:02.829]Ooh, that one would be kind of fun,
- [00:02:03.886]let's check out Places From Movies.
- [00:02:06.296]So when you select what you're doing
- [00:02:08.280]it brings up what looks like
- [00:02:10.387]a Google street view of the place,
- [00:02:12.939]and you can scroll around within the environment
- [00:02:16.360]and get an idea of maybe where you are.
- [00:02:20.359]So you're clearly in America
- [00:02:22.456]because of the way the signs look.
- [00:02:26.747]Probably,
- [00:02:31.509]I don't know, somewhere within there.
- [00:02:32.988]So then you go over to your little map in the corner,
- [00:02:35.556]and I think we're in North America
- [00:02:37.449]so I'm gonna zoom in to North America,
- [00:02:41.074]to the United States,
- [00:02:43.748]and let's go ahead and take a guess.
- [00:02:46.016]I have yet to get any of these right,
- [00:02:48.173]which is hysterical to me.
- [00:02:50.205]So we're gonna go ahead,
- [00:02:51.164]we're gonna do something like there.
- [00:02:54.911]So you kind of drop your pin where you think it is.
- [00:02:57.576]So I'm kind of guessing somewhere
- [00:02:58.820]in the vicinity of Kansas City.
- [00:03:00.851]I think I'm wrong, this might be the East Coast,
- [00:03:02.932]but let's find out.
- [00:03:04.159]Oh, I was right.
- [00:03:05.090]It was on the East Coast.
- [00:03:06.791]So when you make your selection
- [00:03:07.846]it'll then show you how far away you were
- [00:03:10.238]from where it actually is.
- [00:03:12.226]So if you look at our map I guessed Kansas City,
- [00:03:15.250]and it shows me that the actual location was in New York.
- [00:03:18.825]So then you can play the next round.
- [00:03:22.825]Okay,
- [00:03:25.994]so now we look around again
- [00:03:34.736]and pick another spot, I'm gonna zoom in again.
- [00:03:41.046]I'm gonna go with Arizona.
- [00:03:47.395]Hah, Saudi Arabia, so I wasn't even anywhere close.
- [00:03:51.474]So you get the idea of how this app works.
- [00:03:54.262]You can make your own maps.
- [00:03:56.652]There is a version of this where you pay
- [00:03:59.777]and you will open up more features,
- [00:04:02.044]but they have a lot of really awesome built-in apps.
- [00:04:07.379]So let's go and let's create our own map,
- [00:04:10.771]and we're gonna call this Test.
- [00:04:15.559]We'll give it that kind of a background,
- [00:04:23.702]and let's go ahead and we'll put
- [00:04:24.995]Lincoln, Nebraska on our map.
- [00:04:32.160]And we'll do UNO.
- [00:04:35.956]I don't know that that would tell anyone right there
- [00:04:38.697]that that's Lincoln.
- [00:04:40.221]Let's maybe see if we find the university on the map.
- [00:04:50.887]So as you can see, you go through
- [00:04:52.349]and you can identify locations,
- [00:04:53.892]so if you're working with a class
- [00:04:55.216]and you wanna do something, say, with your local area,
- [00:04:59.532]you could go through and you could identify
- [00:05:01.403]points of interest within your city,
- [00:05:03.327]and then you could expose your students to those places
- [00:05:06.148]through this virtual app,
- [00:05:08.494]and make it like a game for the class.
- [00:05:10.648]And you can either do it where the whole class
- [00:05:12.192]works together to figure it out,
- [00:05:13.595]you could have them do it as tables,
- [00:05:15.150]you could have them do it as individuals.
- [00:05:17.283]So basically you can modify how you use the app
- [00:05:20.002]to how you're already teaching.
- [00:05:21.888]So my name is Zoe and this has been GeoGuessr
- [00:05:24.466]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, see ya!
