- [00:00:00.130]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom:
- [00:00:02.417]Canary Learning.
- [00:00:04.603](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.098]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls and today on
- [00:00:19.029]Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:20.478]we're going to look at Canary Learning.
- [00:00:22.753]Canary Learning is basically a grade book
- [00:00:25.654]and it integrates into Google classroom
- [00:00:28.707]which is what caught my eye,
- [00:00:30.718]because I'm always interested in things
- [00:00:32.106]that are going to work seamlessly
- [00:00:33.598]with Google Classroom and make that interface
- [00:00:35.873]work really well for teachers and for students.
- [00:00:39.334]So this is a free app for teachers
- [00:00:42.259]and then for the students.
- [00:00:46.094]You log in through your Google account,
- [00:00:49.823]but students can do assignments that are both
- [00:00:52.486]handed physically around in class,
- [00:00:54.673]and you can do digital assignments.
- [00:00:57.675]So we'll go ahead and we'll login.
- [00:01:00.260]I logged in using my Google account,
- [00:01:02.592]so again, you don't have to worry about
- [00:01:03.817]multiple sign-ins, it's the same password
- [00:01:06.239]and it'll go in seamlessly.
- [00:01:08.874]You can set up, like most of these applications
- [00:01:11.535]if you have multiple periods and you teach multiple classes
- [00:01:14.238]you can set up one for each class.
- [00:01:16.404]You do that over here in the classes section.
- [00:01:20.919]So if we go to our main launch page,
- [00:01:25.261]it gives a calendar.
- [00:01:26.934]It shows sort of what you have going on.
- [00:01:30.178]Homework that you still have outstanding,
- [00:01:31.763]so stuff that students haven't turned in
- [00:01:33.366]but that you have assigned.
- [00:01:35.250]Then different assignments, resources that
- [00:01:38.586]you've set up for students.
- [00:01:40.611]Then even some teacher resources.
- [00:01:42.552]You can see who has late assignments,
- [00:01:46.040]and they list by name and they tell you
- [00:01:47.905]which assignment it is.
- [00:01:49.876]Then you can see assignments that you have coming up.
- [00:01:52.622]So it's really nice that it's all right there
- [00:01:55.020]on one screen for you.
- [00:01:56.817]Then if we go ahead and go into the grading section,
- [00:01:59.662]so it's gonna say that this test student
- [00:02:02.474]that was put in there didn't submit any work.
- [00:02:04.906]So you can assign zero points or you can
- [00:02:06.987]leave ungraded and go to the next student.
- [00:02:08.935]It's nice that they just give you
- [00:02:10.186]those one click options.
- [00:02:12.041]I'm always interested in anything
- [00:02:13.558]that's going to save me time while grading.
- [00:02:16.303]So we're just go ahead and leave that ungraded.
- [00:02:19.005]And again, that will assign zero points.
- [00:02:22.175]So it's just showing no one assigned any work,
- [00:02:25.182]because I didn't put any work in here.
- [00:02:27.676]But you can also build in lessons.
- [00:02:30.534]And we'll go ahead and create a new lesson.
- [00:02:33.401]We'll title it Test Lesson.
- [00:02:41.045]Then when we go into it...
- [00:02:47.973]Okay the new assignment, test...
- [00:02:52.454]Oops. Test Assignment.
- [00:02:57.193]Then again, you can have categories
- [00:03:00.557]and we're going to make this a project.
- [00:03:03.578]It's a required submission, it's graded.
- [00:03:05.118]So again it's real, you can make these
- [00:03:06.836]so if it's an in class thing and it's not graded
- [00:03:08.857]but you want them to use the platform
- [00:03:10.366]you can do it with that.
- [00:03:11.763]If they don't submit something but it's still
- [00:03:13.939]graded, so it's a project or I don't know,
- [00:03:18.743]some other sort of oral presentation maybe,
- [00:03:20.622]where there's no submission that would be
- [00:03:22.715]digital or in class you could do it that way
- [00:03:24.724]so there would be no submission
- [00:03:25.908]but it would still be graded.
- [00:03:27.737]You can give it an amount of points
- [00:03:29.234]and then select the due date
- [00:03:32.479]and then you can lock it and unlock it.
- [00:03:34.539]So if it's locked the students can't see it.
- [00:03:37.330]Then you can upload a file
- [00:03:39.370]so if you have an assignment sheet already existing
- [00:03:43.510]this is the beauty of it.
- [00:03:44.406]You can use all of the content
- [00:03:45.838]and stuff that you already have
- [00:03:47.533]and load it in there.
- [00:03:49.067]Or if it's a website URL you can
- [00:03:50.979]plug that in there.
- [00:03:53.759]So we'll go ahead and...
- [00:03:59.626]add in something that I have from my class.
- [00:04:09.924]It does force you to upload a document,
- [00:04:12.618]which to me is a limitation of it
- [00:04:14.175]because not all of my assignments in my class
- [00:04:16.466]have a really detailed assignment sheet.
- [00:04:18.778]So it is something to be aware of while
- [00:04:20.295]you're using this.
- [00:04:22.475]We'll go ahead and submit that random file.
- [00:04:27.371]We'll say it's worth five points.
- [00:04:32.125]Maybe that was it, maybe it knew that,
- [00:04:34.292]okay so it's going to make you require points.
- [00:04:36.024]So you have to put in a number.
- [00:04:37.495]I think you can put in zero.
- [00:04:39.207]If it's not graded or for whatever reason
- [00:04:42.048]worth zero points you can have assignments
- [00:04:43.923]worth zero points but the program will
- [00:04:45.613]make you assign points.
- [00:04:47.477]We'll go ahead and save that.
- [00:04:50.374]From everything that I've read
- [00:04:51.572]and in their frequently asked questions
- [00:04:53.237]it does integrate into Google Classroom.
- [00:04:57.043]Because from what I've seen with Google Classroom
- [00:04:58.819]one of their limitations is the grading of assignments
- [00:05:03.083]so this might be a nice way to help facilitate
- [00:05:07.120]ease of grading, ease of assignments,
- [00:05:09.279]and maybe give you some more options as
- [00:05:10.936]an instructor to make that transition
- [00:05:13.454]from whatever you're currently using.
- [00:05:15.297]Or if you just want to try something new,
- [00:05:17.278]maybe make that a little bit more seamless for you.
- [00:05:20.277]So again, this has been Canary Learning,
- [00:05:22.609]and from the main jump page to the way
- [00:05:27.962]that you can grade assignments, it seems to be
- [00:05:31.189]a pretty decent way to help you as an instructor
- [00:05:35.553]keep track of everything and get assignments graded.
- [00:05:39.115]So I'm Zoe, and this has been
- [00:05:40.805]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
