- [00:00:00.434](acoustic guitar)
- [00:00:07.133]So, today we're visiting the North 48th street
- [00:00:09.956]solid waste disposal facility.
- [00:00:15.477]Students in this class will be working
- [00:00:17.519]on design proposals to reimagine the future of this site.
- [00:00:22.756]There's a long history of solid waste dumping here,
- [00:00:26.891]and now that's transitioned into more
- [00:00:28.894]construction and demolition debris.
- [00:00:30.977]So, right now, they're starting to do
- [00:00:32.651]some site inventory and analysis.
- [00:00:35.020]This is so that we can identify all the plants
- [00:00:37.268]growing on the site right now.
- [00:00:38.943]The goldenrod's native,
- [00:00:41.069]and I'm pretty sure that the sunflowers are native.
- [00:00:46.053]Coming here gives them the opportunity
- [00:00:47.811]to become familiar with the site.
- [00:00:50.011]It's much different seeing the site in person
- [00:00:52.500]than it is looking at it through aerial photography,
- [00:00:55.482]and, so, today is about immersing themselves
- [00:00:58.021]in the site so they can start to do some analysis,
- [00:01:01.046]and then that analysis will lead into proposals.
- [00:01:04.885]I guess we're just trying to get a more in-depth
- [00:01:07.458]look at what makes a site unique.
- [00:01:10.484]You always have ideas of what you wanna do
- [00:01:12.408]and then you get here and it's maybe a little bit
- [00:01:15.193]different than what you thought,
- [00:01:16.333]so, I had some plans, but walking around
- [00:01:18.618]that definitely changes it,
- [00:01:20.460]and I'm really excited to look forward
- [00:01:21.973]because I think there is a lot of opportunity
- [00:01:23.649]in the site to do something really great.
- [00:01:26.268]The topography is more diverse than it looks like
- [00:01:30.149]it might be on paper,
- [00:01:31.334]you have these kind of ravines by streams,
- [00:01:34.073]and then you have very kind of flat rolling prairie
- [00:01:37.302]topography, it's really interesting.
- [00:01:39.508]In your mind, you also have to go through
- [00:01:40.982]kind of a really comprehensive checklist of
- [00:01:42.942]what you're looking at,
- [00:01:44.290]so it's exciting, it's fun, but it's also
- [00:01:46.702]serious work that really matters to your design process.
- [00:01:52.228]I'm using this cutter to make the model for my site.
- [00:01:57.373]I had students look at a little area of their
- [00:02:00.152]projects and cut out topography using the laser cutter
- [00:02:03.136]and sort of pancake-model it together
- [00:02:06.245]and then think about the spatial aspects of their designs
- [00:02:09.720]and how their designs are hitting the ground.
- [00:02:13.303]To me, that would say, okay, I've gone from,
- [00:02:16.124]you know, an idea and an end product
- [00:02:19.681]or an evolution to an end product,
- [00:02:21.560]but how do I implement it.
- [00:02:23.851]So, we had some experts
- [00:02:25.693]from other universities come as well as
- [00:02:27.982]a local engineer who has worked with the site.
- [00:02:31.908](applause)
- [00:02:34.241]I think it's a good learning experience because
- [00:02:36.605]it exposes students to different ways of thinking,
- [00:02:39.468]they will be working on conventional projects
- [00:02:41.881]in the profession, and I think that it's important
- [00:02:43.926]in school that we think about pushing those boundaries
- [00:02:46.994]of the profession and how we can think as designers.
