- [00:00:00.080]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:03.370]Dragon Box Math.
- [00:00:06.082](techno music)
- [00:00:18.710]Hi my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:20.754]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge.
- [00:00:23.720]And today I want to talk about two apps,
- [00:00:26.295]two learning apps, from Dragon Box.
- [00:00:30.620]Dragon Box has created a few apps we've talked about before.
- [00:00:33.480]One of them was originally called Dragon Box
- [00:00:36.940]and was a pre-Algebra app.
- [00:00:40.132]The reason I call it an app and not a game
- [00:00:42.788]is that it is truly a learning app,
- [00:00:45.110]that is they take game principles
- [00:00:48.266]but they really apply them to deep learning
- [00:00:50.080]through experimentation.
- [00:00:52.750]What they've done is they've created the next few
- [00:00:56.046]and I'm going to show two of them today
- [00:00:59.526]because it's really fascinating how they've done this work
- [00:01:03.641]with number knowledge and operations.
- [00:01:07.730]The first one we're going to talk about
- [00:01:09.360]is called Big Numbers.
- [00:01:11.357]So this is Dragon Box Big Numbers
- [00:01:13.563]and what you get is you get an area
- [00:01:16.023]where you have an apple tree.
- [00:01:17.320]This is where you start.
- [00:01:21.320]You can see that there are levels.
- [00:01:22.992]I've got some apples I've gotten
- [00:01:25.040]so I can buy things for those apples.
- [00:01:27.826]So I'm learning about numbers,
- [00:01:29.300]I'm learning about counting
- [00:01:31.297]and I'm learning about addition in this one.
- [00:01:34.747]I can follow and you see,
- [00:01:37.040]I have six apples, this cost me five.
- [00:01:39.919]I have to transfer the five.
- [00:01:43.957]Now I have one extra, so now I've practiced
- [00:01:49.317]six minus five equals one.
- [00:01:51.286]Then I get to actually make the one.
- [00:01:53.766]So it's tactile, it's game like,
- [00:01:56.808]and it's got all of these activities
- [00:01:59.052]and problem solving to go with it.
- [00:02:01.666]Now I've got one jewel and when I get the full thing
- [00:02:05.057]I get to go to the next level.
- [00:02:06.829]So you can see that the game aspects of this
- [00:02:09.630]are really fascinating.
- [00:02:12.906]So now I can go back and I can go back to my forest
- [00:02:16.946]where I can pick more apples.
- [00:02:20.592]So here are more apples and I can put them here
- [00:02:23.971]and then I can do addition and again,
- [00:02:26.506]I had one before so I can take it down
- [00:02:29.014]and I have the rest, it's four.
- [00:02:31.333]And now I'm drawing four so you can see
- [00:02:35.198]it's even got the directions so you're not lost
- [00:02:37.729]and it does have sound effects
- [00:02:39.306]but also it actually tells you about these things.
- [00:02:42.485]So again, you have to wait,
- [00:02:44.296]you can see that our apple tree has to wait
- [00:02:46.460]until we get apples.
- [00:02:48.411]But you can also roam the world and find different things.
- [00:02:51.861]We need six apples, I think we have only four,
- [00:02:54.669]so we can't get our next jewel.
- [00:02:56.766]You can see that there are other sights
- [00:02:58.485]to get after you finish the first one.
- [00:03:00.326]So let's go back into our forest and wait patiently,
- [00:03:04.066]not my strongest suit by the way.
- [00:03:05.158]But you can also explore kind of what's available around.
- [00:03:14.962]And just enjoy the music as we're
- [00:03:17.001]waiting for our apples to ripen.
- [00:03:19.770]Here they are ripened.
- [00:03:20.786]So we've got all three of them
- [00:03:22.714]and again we can do this thing where we take
- [00:03:26.156]the three plus two and we have five.
- [00:03:30.451]And we draw five,
- [00:03:33.886]whoops, five.
- [00:03:39.561]I've got two more.
- [00:03:41.697]You see it reacts to me so if I didn't pick up
- [00:03:43.965]all the apples it was perfectly fine with it.
- [00:03:46.612]It doesn't force you to do all of it.
- [00:03:47.904]It allows you to do these more complex things.
- [00:03:50.481]In this case, we got seven, again I draw it.
- [00:03:53.169]So you see the addition sign on the side,
- [00:03:55.050]it's walking you through all of these steps.
- [00:03:57.507]Now I can go and buy one more jewel
- [00:03:59.783]and when I buy jewels, I'm actually practicing
- [00:04:02.205]my subtraction.
- [00:04:04.746]I'm taking away six, so three
- [00:04:08.686]plus three and then that leaves over one.
- [00:04:12.820]And one is the result.
- [00:04:14.071]So you can see how they're using game principles
- [00:04:16.462]to really teach this.
- [00:04:18.342]This is Big Numbers and now I'm going to show you
- [00:04:22.378]Dragon Box Numbers, which is for somewhat younger kids.
- [00:04:26.791]It allows you to do basic addition and
- [00:04:30.574]subtraction with very, very small numbers.
- [00:04:34.515]Again, we're playing with the nooms,
- [00:04:37.093]and you can see, here's one of them.
- [00:04:41.670]This took me awhile to understand.
- [00:04:43.696]You can make them jump by the way,
- [00:04:45.553]they like that but not too much.
- [00:04:50.958]You can kind of and he starts being sad
- [00:04:53.002]and he's sad because he's hungry.
- [00:04:56.225]Because they are numbers and not real creatures,
- [00:04:58.454]they actually eat each other
- [00:04:59.974]and so we are getting one plus one equals two.
- [00:05:02.923]Here's another set.
- [00:05:07.665]Then,
- [00:05:09.708]two plus two
- [00:05:11.653]is four.
- [00:05:12.930]You can see that they play with the number of eyes
- [00:05:14.718]and now we're actually
- [00:05:16.229]taking them away.
- [00:05:21.146]And now they need ones.
- [00:05:24.699]One,
- [00:05:25.846]two,
- [00:05:27.356]three,
- [00:05:28.354]and four.
- [00:05:31.020]You can see how it teaches you to do some
- [00:05:33.505]things and you can see that in the puzzles
- [00:05:39.515]you can take it in different ways
- [00:05:41.117]and you also have a sandbox
- [00:05:42.850]where all you're doing is playing.
- [00:05:43.988]So kids can explore without necessarily having
- [00:05:45.985]too many assignments.
- [00:05:48.753]So let's try this one and see if we can figure out
- [00:05:50.750]what it wants us to do.
- [00:05:52.886]We can get some of these.
- [00:05:54.744]This would fit here.
- [00:05:57.646]This one would fit here.
- [00:06:00.165]And now,
- [00:06:02.464]We need a double one
- [00:06:06.447]and you can see how that helps problem solving
- [00:06:10.214]and helps us
- [00:06:13.116]explain these things to kids.
- [00:06:14.226]Kids can explore this on their own
- [00:06:17.454]but I would really advice, and I always do this,
- [00:06:20.005]whenever you have these games,
- [00:06:21.817]get to a point where you talk to kids about
- [00:06:23.177]what they're doing and why they're doing it.
- [00:06:25.545]Explaining the reactions in _.
- [00:06:27.506]Because I think that's where most
- [00:06:29.178]of the learning would happen.
- [00:06:30.711]You get coins which means with these coins
- [00:06:32.346]problem solved you can buy more complex problems
- [00:06:34.134]and other fun things you can do.
- [00:06:36.758]And you can see those down there.
- [00:06:38.797]So this is Dragon Box Numbers.
- [00:06:40.646]Today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:06:43.433]we looked at two things produced by Dragon Box
- [00:06:46.277]that are really aimed at younger learners
- [00:06:48.546]getting math operations through really deep learning
- [00:06:52.378]in a game like environment that allows exploration.
- [00:06:54.258]I'll see you next time on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
