- [00:00:02.222]Welcome to 2017 and the beginning of our spring semester
- [00:00:05.761]and new academic term at UNL.
- [00:00:08.910]I'm here this morning with Mike Boehm
- [00:00:10.990]and Donde Plowman, our two new senior leaders
- [00:00:13.980]for the university who started just this past week
- [00:00:17.751]and have hit the ground running already
- [00:00:20.096]in their new roles.
- [00:00:21.417]Donde has assumed the role of our new
- [00:00:23.148]Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer
- [00:00:25.947]for the university and Mike has assumed the role
- [00:00:28.486]of the Harlan Vice Chancellor
- [00:00:29.811]for the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:00:32.511]and Vice President of Ag at the system level.
- [00:00:36.174]I have to say that I couldn't be more excited
- [00:00:38.344]about the year that we have ahead.
- [00:00:40.973]We think about growing the student experience
- [00:00:44.064]here at the university into being the best place
- [00:00:46.883]in the big 10 to be a student
- [00:00:49.361]in surpassing our previous research records
- [00:00:52.144]and things that really matter to the state of Nebraska
- [00:00:55.264]and serving the state that we are part of
- [00:00:57.512]as the public land grant university
- [00:00:59.424]and flagship university for the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:03.068]Our best days are ahead of us.
- [00:01:04.531]Can't be more excited about that.
- [00:01:06.451]Mike, you're joining us from Ohio State
- [00:01:08.841]where you served as the Vice Provost there
- [00:01:10.715]for the last number of years.
- [00:01:12.774]So you're going from one color of red
- [00:01:14.705]to a better color of red.
- [00:01:16.016]There we go, go big red.
- [00:01:17.124](laughing)
- [00:01:18.193]So what are your first impressions here
- [00:01:20.761]as you come into the state of Nebraska?
- [00:01:22.863]Well first, I'm excited to work with this amazing team,
- [00:01:25.361]no question about it and I'm excited and honored
- [00:01:28.096]to be the new leader of the Institute for Ag
- [00:01:30.995]and Natural Resources here.
- [00:01:33.185]So I came in early December and actually got
- [00:01:35.726]a jump start on things
- [00:01:37.007]and was able to get out around the state.
- [00:01:39.457]Went to Grand Island to see our new engagement center there
- [00:01:43.625]at the fairgrounds.
- [00:01:44.657]Went to Curtis to NCTA, up to Gudmundsen Ranch,
- [00:01:48.715]North Platte, just a good chance to get out
- [00:01:51.265]and see the state a little bit
- [00:01:53.265]and to talk to the amazing people.
- [00:01:56.017]And no question, impressed with our ability
- [00:01:59.525]and the institute and UNL's reach into the communities
- [00:02:02.726]around Nebraska.
- [00:02:04.516]And so I'm excited.
- [00:02:05.745]I'm excited to be working with you Ronnie
- [00:02:07.552]and you Donde.
- [00:02:09.932]Well it sounds like you've hit the ground running.
- [00:02:11.423]I know I was out with you in early December for part of that
- [00:02:14.172]and the state received you really well
- [00:02:16.372]and are excited to have you on board.
- [00:02:18.423]So that's really fantastic.
- [00:02:20.052]So Donde, you're taking on a new role
- [00:02:22.183]here after having been a great leader on our campus
- [00:02:24.983]for the last over six years
- [00:02:28.103]as the dean of CBA and so now taking on this expanded role
- [00:02:32.413]where you'll lead our academic enterprise
- [00:02:34.304]for the university.
- [00:02:35.904]Tell us a little bit of your thoughts
- [00:02:36.872]about moving into that role.
- [00:02:39.352]Well, you know, I think first of all,
- [00:02:40.613]a lot of people might say,
- [00:02:41.653]what is the Executive Vice Chancellor
- [00:02:43.541]and Chief Academic Officer
- [00:02:45.122]and so I look forward to taking the office
- [00:02:47.430]to the campus, getting to know the campus better
- [00:02:50.151]and getting input from the deans and department chairs
- [00:02:53.701]and faculty on what we want this campus
- [00:02:55.933]to look like academically as we go forward.
- [00:02:58.301]So I'm excited about that and I envision the next few weeks
- [00:03:01.261]doing a lot of listening and learning
- [00:03:03.232]about the larger campus and finding out
- [00:03:05.122]what's on peoples' hearts and minds.
- [00:03:08.162]Well that restructuring of what was
- [00:03:11.151]the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
- [00:03:14.363]in our most recent history for the university.
- [00:03:16.722]We felt it was really important to bring together
- [00:03:20.221]the academic affairs and academic programs
- [00:03:22.550]of the university.
- [00:03:23.693]The research efforts of the university
- [00:03:26.232]and the student affairs.
- [00:03:27.773]You know, the student life part of our university.
- [00:03:30.042]So very excited about that. Me too.
- [00:03:32.202]You know, one of the things
- [00:03:33.035]that we pride ourselves in
- [00:03:36.232]at the University of Nebraska is accessibility.
- [00:03:39.160]And that means a lot of different things.
- [00:03:40.701]Accessibility of students, getting as many students
- [00:03:44.268]to higher education and the benefits of a college degree
- [00:03:49.583]from the University of Nebraska,
- [00:03:51.252]but it also means accessibility of us as leaders,
- [00:03:54.359]accessibility of our faculty,
- [00:03:56.583]accessibility of the community
- [00:03:58.922]of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:00.932]What are your thoughts there, Mike?
- [00:04:03.642]Yeah, like Donde said,
- [00:04:04.972]I think, for me, a lot of listening, Ronnie.
- [00:04:07.892]No question about that.
- [00:04:09.201]And that started in the beginning of November
- [00:04:12.982]when I made my first trip here
- [00:04:14.893]and out in the state.
- [00:04:17.782]But I think for me, it's about rolling up my sleeves
- [00:04:20.250]and getting to understand the faculty, staff,
- [00:04:24.361]student needs, the community's needs,
- [00:04:26.920]and facilitating the good work that's already going on
- [00:04:29.812]and then figuring out with this leadership team
- [00:04:32.612]and my team at INAR of how best to facilitate
- [00:04:36.030]the success of our people and our communities.
- [00:04:39.190]Donde?
- [00:04:40.023]Well, I'm a big believer in building trust
- [00:04:42.780]in relationships and it's hard to be in charge
- [00:04:46.790]when you don't know one another.
- [00:04:48.772]And so I really look forward to building new teams
- [00:04:52.852]and letting those teams help us move forward in the future.
- [00:04:57.180]So I'm excited about that.
- [00:04:58.252]It's about relationships and about getting to know
- [00:04:59.990]one another and working together towards our goals.
- [00:05:03.710]That relationship building is really important
- [00:05:06.040]and I know the two of you,
- [00:05:07.940]part of the reason we selected you for these positions
- [00:05:10.670]and we're so excited about this new team
- [00:05:12.572]is that you have the natural enate sense of that
- [00:05:15.961]and are going to bring that to the campus.
- [00:05:18.990]You know, as we look at this year ahead,
- [00:05:22.900]it's not just a school year,
- [00:05:23.921]but it's also this year we've been calling the year
- [00:05:26.121]of the strategic plan.
- [00:05:27.840]We talked a lot about that in the summer
- [00:05:30.260]and through the fall semester in 2016
- [00:05:33.657]how important it was going to be
- [00:05:35.226]for us to articulate our vision for the future
- [00:05:38.086]and a vision of a boulder and bigger university
- [00:05:40.806]as we move forward.
- [00:05:41.926]We've had four groups.
- [00:05:43.548]Donde, you're leading one of those
- [00:05:45.804]that have been at work over the last few months
- [00:05:48.055]to help in form that process in moving forward.
- [00:05:50.905]So this time next year, when we come to celebrating 2018
- [00:05:55.086]and the start of spring semester 2018,
- [00:05:57.206]we'll be living that plan
- [00:05:58.646]and it's gonna be an exciting thing to see happen.
- [00:06:01.214]So have a great spring semester.
- [00:06:03.545]I could not be more excited to have these leaders in place
- [00:06:06.555]and go big red.
- [00:06:08.156]Go big red.
