- [00:00:02.370]Let's move into the next part of the workshop.
- [00:00:05.811]The scholarly publication process.
- [00:00:09.291]So, some of you may have been through this before.
- [00:00:11.360]Some of you, this might be new territories.
- [00:00:13.932]But let's just talk about the process,
- [00:00:17.032]from the author's point of view.
- [00:00:19.801]So, we have talked about the prewriting and the drafting.
- [00:00:23.502]And now we are going to talk about
- [00:00:25.371]submitting to the journal for peer review.
- [00:00:28.213]What is the process?
- [00:00:30.442]So, these days all of the submissions are done online.
- [00:00:35.171]And so, this is the screenshot for the
- [00:00:37.831]scholar one submission system.
- [00:00:40.039]A lot of journals use this system.
- [00:00:43.001]Basically you have to create an account,
- [00:00:45.448]and then log in to that account
- [00:00:47.491]and submit all of the parts of the manuscript
- [00:00:50.231]through the website.
- [00:00:52.879]And so, once you've logged in
- [00:00:54.880]you'll see that you have some boxes to fill out.
- [00:00:57.452]You fill out the title.
- [00:00:59.710]You paste in the abstract.
- [00:01:01.890]You make some selections.
- [00:01:03.582]Basically it lists all of the steps
- [00:01:05.492]that you'll be going through.
- [00:01:07.422]And so, you put in some details,
- [00:01:10.252]about the authors, you have to select
- [00:01:13.491]some reviewers for this particular journal.
- [00:01:17.111]And then you upload the files and then you submit it.
- [00:01:21.732]So it's pretty straightforward.
- [00:01:24.552]Still this process might take one or two hours
- [00:01:27.443]to get through it and you need to have all the files
- [00:01:30.170]ready to go in the right format.
- [00:01:34.011]So, read those instructions to authors.
- [00:01:37.793]So, this is kind of a flow chart of what's going to happen.
- [00:01:41.392]So, once the authors have prepared the manuscript
- [00:01:45.494]the corresponding author is going
- [00:01:47.730]to submit to the journal.
- [00:01:50.643]So once that manuscript is submitted
- [00:01:52.602]it will go to an associate editor.
- [00:01:55.702]Different journals may have different titles
- [00:01:57.533]for their editors.
- [00:01:59.684]But it goes to the associate editor first,
- [00:02:03.053]who's going to take a quick look at it,
- [00:02:04.824]review it for technical aspects, and potentially
- [00:02:10.421]for all of those other things we talked about.
- [00:02:13.349]Is this going to be of interest to my journal?
- [00:02:16.071]So at that point the associate editor can reject the paper.
- [00:02:20.872]Just flat out rejection, without review.
- [00:02:24.330]Or if the associate editor want to have it reviewed,
- [00:02:28.137]he'll send it to a handling editor, he or she.
- [00:02:31.826]And the handling editor will then recruit peer reviewers
- [00:02:36.175]to review the manuscript.
- [00:02:38.342]The peer reviewers will give a recommendation
- [00:02:41.174]back to the handling editor.
- [00:02:44.466]And then the handling editor will decide
- [00:02:47.165]whether or not to publish.
- [00:02:49.304]So basically, the handling editor
- [00:02:51.406]will come up with a decision,
- [00:02:53.815]and he or she will send that decision back
- [00:02:56.906]to the corresponding authors
- [00:02:58.784]along with the peer reviewers reports.
- [00:03:03.062]So, at this point the authors will see
- [00:03:05.875]what the reviewers had to say
- [00:03:08.075]about the strengths, the weaknesses, the importance,
- [00:03:12.214]those kinds of things that go into reviews.
- [00:03:15.145]And the decision will be, basically, one of these four.
- [00:03:21.040]They will either be reject, reject and resubmit,
- [00:03:26.375]could be accepted with revisions,
- [00:03:29.115]they rarely will say will be accepted with revisions,
- [00:03:32.725]they'll usually say could be accepted,
- [00:03:36.406]or sometimes it will be accept directly.
- [00:03:40.213]Usually not accept directly.
- [00:03:42.634]Usually this is after it's gone through revisions,
- [00:03:46.445]then it can be accepted.
- [00:03:48.825]So those are the four options.
- [00:03:50.965]The authors will lean what happens
- [00:03:53.905]and then they need to respond to the decision,
- [00:03:57.835]and the reviewers reports.
