- [00:00:00.296]Coming up on Mobile Learning
- [00:00:01.408]in the Classroom: Creativity.
- [00:00:03.305](techno music)
- [00:00:16.978]Hi. My name is Guy Trainin,
- [00:00:18.125]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:19.956]from Tech Edge, and today I want
- [00:00:21.289]to talk about creativity.
- [00:00:23.915]There are two apps that have been
- [00:00:25.258]making me especially happy recently,
- [00:00:27.163]and I'm gonna talk about both of them.
- [00:00:28.721]The first one that we're going to talk about
- [00:00:31.616]is Play-Doh TOUCH, and in Play-Doh TOUCH
- [00:00:34.642]what you do is you create some things
- [00:00:36.666]out of Play-Doh and it's right beneath me.
- [00:00:38.843]We've played around just before we started shooting
- [00:00:42.119]to create some Play-Doh creatures.
- [00:00:44.305]We've got an elephant,
- [00:00:45.691]we've got a bear slash kanga,
- [00:00:48.409]we've got a duck and we've got a flower,
- [00:00:52.189]so these are things we've just
- [00:00:53.323]created in a few minutes.
- [00:00:54.821]And then what we did is we went to Play-Doh TOUCH,
- [00:00:57.943]and in Play-Doh TOUCH you can
- [00:00:59.249]actually scan your creations.
- [00:01:01.513]We found out that light surfaces
- [00:01:03.888]help you scan it the right way.
- [00:01:06.229]Then what you can do is you can start
- [00:01:10.269]playing with those creations that you've made.
- [00:01:13.751]Let me just take you to where we are,
- [00:01:16.279]and you can see that you can
- [00:01:18.033]have multiple creations in there.
- [00:01:24.366]This incorporates both the creativity
- [00:01:26.588]by creating these characters in Play-Doh,
- [00:01:29.108]and then it asks you at specific times
- [00:01:31.604]to create specific things in Play-Doh,
- [00:01:34.455]and it also has game-like features.
- [00:01:37.783]As we're moving through this game,
- [00:01:39.538]and I can move this a little bit faster
- [00:01:41.310]just so we can get to the game,
- [00:01:43.309]you can see that we can start our game.
- [00:01:46.997]We can start our game by scanning a creature.
- [00:01:50.776]Let's scan Dan's elephant.
- [00:01:58.488]You can see that it kind of sees
- [00:02:00.171]what the outline is,
- [00:02:02.365]and it's not always exact,
- [00:02:03.798]so you need to play with it.
- [00:02:05.165]Shadows do matter, so lighting will matter.
- [00:02:07.116]We've got here the lighting
- [00:02:08.630]that comes from the camera,
- [00:02:09.558]so we've got kind of a funny tail
- [00:02:11.000]to the elephant, which is perfectly fine.
- [00:02:13.284]Now we can start playing.
- [00:02:15.655]So you can see that you
- [00:02:16.767]collect Play-Doh along the way.
- [00:02:18.803]As you collect them, you can get
- [00:02:21.096]to add creatures and add creations to your work.
- [00:02:27.764]I'm going to use my flower
- [00:02:35.376]to do that, and it has to see the whole creation.
- [00:02:41.819]Once it does, here we have now the flower,
- [00:02:45.102]and again, the shadow is playing with that,
- [00:02:46.992]so you do have to think about lighting,
- [00:02:48.667]which is actually a really good lesson,
- [00:02:50.869]since we do expect kids to start being able to create.
- [00:02:54.383]You see that now the flowers are all over,
- [00:02:56.642]and they're part of the world we created.
- [00:02:59.817]That's a way to do that, and as you get along,
- [00:03:04.320]you are asked to make more and more creations,
- [00:03:07.002]and you have the opportunities to have more characters.
- [00:03:09.477]Here we're getting another one like us,
- [00:03:11.431]so now they're moving in parallel.
- [00:03:14.409]You can see that you can collect
- [00:03:17.658]different creatures on the way.
- [00:03:19.906]You can create them.
- [00:03:21.040]Let's try to incorporate our duck.
- [00:03:23.685]I know it's supposed to be a ghost,
- [00:03:25.027]but we've got a duck.
- [00:03:27.141]Let's see if it'll let us.
- [00:03:30.373]This is where things start getting tricky,
- [00:03:32.404]so you need to create based on
- [00:03:33.738]what they want you to create,
- [00:03:35.681]which sometimes is harder.
- [00:03:39.442]That's one of the challenges
- [00:03:40.892]that we find with this game,
- [00:03:42.763]is it does allow you to be creative,
- [00:03:44.383]but there are boundaries that
- [00:03:45.562]they've created around this to make sure that you
- [00:03:48.857]learn to create different shapes
- [00:03:50.097]and you're not just creating blobs everywhere.
- [00:03:52.150]I love this, and as we played with this
- [00:03:54.416]and created with this
- [00:03:56.062]I love the fact that it
- [00:03:56.895]incorporates all of these things.
- [00:03:58.795]It incorporates the game features,
- [00:04:01.461]and at the same time there's lots of creativity.
- [00:04:03.529]You interact with something physical,
- [00:04:05.041]so you're not doing something just inside the game.
- [00:04:09.071]You get to kind of marry the two
- [00:04:10.852]in what just makes me smile.
- [00:04:15.587]This is Play-Doh TOUCH, and I think
- [00:04:18.439]it's a fabulous app that allows you to do a lot
- [00:04:23.100]and allows kids to create and be creative.
- [00:04:25.276]You can do this at home,
- [00:04:26.340]you can do this in the classroom.
- [00:04:27.771]The app is great, it is available, and it is free.
- [00:04:33.740]The second one is one from Tiny Bop.
- [00:04:36.718]Tiny Bop is an outfit that created
- [00:04:40.504]a variety of fantastic apps for kids.
- [00:04:43.294]This one is called ME.
- [00:04:45.337]In ME you really write about yourself.
- [00:04:47.118]You get the opportunity to answer
- [00:04:48.739]some questions about yourself.
- [00:04:50.376]I've got a profile in there.
- [00:04:53.471]You can have multiple profile,
- [00:04:54.929]which is really useful.
- [00:04:55.965]It's true about many of their other things.
- [00:05:00.059]You can see that you fill out things like,
- [00:05:03.280]"This is my age."
- [00:05:05.384]"This is my favorite YouTube channel."
- [00:05:08.941]That would be Tech Edge.
- [00:05:10.361]Tech Edge zero one.
- [00:05:11.341]If you don't have a favorite one,
- [00:05:12.494]that should be your favorite.
- [00:05:14.267]It's got questions,
- [00:05:16.425]"If I were the ruler of the universe,
- [00:05:17.982]"this would be our flag,"
- [00:05:19.216]so you'd draw a flag, right?
- [00:05:22.514]You can go over the lines,
- [00:05:23.534]which I appreciate by the way.
- [00:05:26.243]So you can, actually let's use this one.
- [00:05:29.571]Make a flag,
- [00:05:30.994]and if it was the flag of the universe,
- [00:05:32.857]it would have to be
- [00:05:37.078]I would have to have a bear's face
- [00:05:41.981]right in the middle of the flag,
- [00:05:43.572]and then we can have a flower and a bird.
- [00:05:49.261]And so that's my flag of the universe.
- [00:05:53.598]You can record,
- [00:05:56.522]"Only my best friends know this about me."
- [00:05:59.422]And then you can record.
- [00:06:01.652]Lots of things about the user as a person.
- [00:06:06.169]The way I like thinking about it,
- [00:06:07.780]besides just being a great opportunity
- [00:06:10.290]to talk about yourself and really focus
- [00:06:12.708]on the things you care about
- [00:06:14.159]and kind of outline them,
- [00:06:15.709]what I love about this is this can be
- [00:06:18.092]a great way to get kids to start writing.
- [00:06:21.073]So they have all of this information
- [00:06:22.626]about themselves, and then they can use
- [00:06:24.683]the little things they've created
- [00:06:27.664]to be story starters and to really do things
- [00:06:31.877]that allow them to be creative
- [00:06:34.406]and to write meaningful things
- [00:06:36.168]so you can add,
- [00:06:38.553]"I visited this place,"
- [00:06:42.288]the leaning tower of Pisa, right?
- [00:06:45.948]Then I can draw it.
- [00:06:50.012]That's the leaning tower,
- [00:06:54.250]it's round, right?
- [00:06:58.376]It's not necessarily a great photo.
- [00:07:03.559]So you can see how you can start incorporating
- [00:07:05.737]and then start bringing the writing in,
- [00:07:07.645]so now you've told me what's the place you've visited.
- [00:07:10.631]Tell me more about this place,
- [00:07:11.911]tell me how you felt about it and all kinds of things.
- [00:07:15.940]You can see that you can get more
- [00:07:17.425]and more and more bubbles.
- [00:07:18.943]This is a great way for kids to really talk
- [00:07:21.611]about what they care about
- [00:07:22.984]and for you to get to know them.
- [00:07:24.496]So Tiny Bop ME is a great app.
- [00:07:28.771]It's really, really creative.
- [00:07:30.201]It allows kids to really bring out
- [00:07:31.996]what they care care about.
- [00:07:33.459]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:07:35.808]we've talked about two creativity apps.
- [00:07:37.975]We talked about Play-Doh TOUCH
- [00:07:40.027]and we talked about Tiny Bop ME,
- [00:07:42.647]and I'll see you next time
- [00:07:43.708]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
