- [00:00:04.219]Biomedical engineering is using the tools of engineering,
- [00:00:07.382]which is problem solving, math, science, and physics
- [00:00:09.303]to solve medical problems.
- [00:00:10.919]It's a huge field, but at the center of it is engineering
- [00:00:15.124]and medicine and it allows students to go out
- [00:00:18.042]and go to medical school or dental school
- [00:00:20.798]or professional schools, graduate schools
- [00:00:22.337]or to go right into the medical device
- [00:00:24.234]or pharmaceutical industry.
- [00:00:25.825]In my lab, we really focus on engineering bio materials
- [00:00:29.464]for tissue engineering, so growing organs
- [00:00:32.039]in the lab for transplantation.
- [00:00:34.063]All engineers are trying to develop things
- [00:00:36.160]that make something safer for humans.
- [00:00:38.722]Make it more efficient for humans
- [00:00:40.583]and so all of engineering is a human based discipline
- [00:00:44.871]because we are trying to make the world better
- [00:00:46.802]for all humans and a few dogs.
- [00:00:49.190]Well, imagine if you design a device
- [00:00:51.115]that saves hundreds of thousands of lives, right?
- [00:00:54.197]That's even more than a clinician may impact in their life
- [00:00:57.505]and yet you're getting to do all the things you love to do.
- [00:01:00.484]You get to tinker, you get to solve problems
- [00:01:02.944]and you get to do it knowing
- [00:01:03.995]that you're helping many people.
- [00:01:05.851]The best part of my job is that I get to work
- [00:01:07.591]with students every day and I get to see their excitement
- [00:01:10.784]for their projects, for their class.
- [00:01:13.009]I get to help them on their path
- [00:01:14.843]and I may play a small part,
- [00:01:16.485]but I know that our students are gonna go out and do
- [00:01:19.041]and are out doing wonderful things.
- [00:01:21.271](calm music)
- [00:01:23.485]Engineering is saving lives from anything
- [00:01:25.556]from building safer roads
- [00:01:27.526]to ensuring food security and safety
- [00:01:30.110]to advancing medical devices
- [00:01:32.243]and new drug therapies and gene therapies.
- [00:01:34.915]Engineering has many different avenues
- [00:01:36.881]in which it can save lives.
- [00:01:38.428](calm music)
