- [00:00:29.788]And I've always been kind of goal-oriented
- [00:00:32.135]but what if I told you
- [00:00:41.686]that I had a magic pill
- [00:00:44.381]that would give you more energy, could help improve
- [00:00:46.624]your relationships, also allowed you to help others
- [00:00:51.102]in your life, would help you encourage others,
- [00:00:55.839]would help you see improved results in your workplace
- [00:00:59.338]and even helped you create a dynamic team?
- [00:01:04.290]Well it's not a magic pill.
- [00:01:05.801]It's just really the power of dreaming.
- [00:01:08.427]This all changed for me when I was actually
- [00:01:12.442]on a business visit.
- [00:01:14.160]So I work in economic development.
- [00:01:15.235]In economic development, we go out and do a lot
- [00:01:18.731]of business visits with existing companies,
- [00:01:21.401]talk to them about their company, any plans for expansion,
- [00:01:25.267]all of that good business stuff.
- [00:01:28.275]Well one business visit actually turned into a book club.
- [00:01:33.252]Both the business owner and I got to sharing
- [00:01:36.532]about different books.
- [00:01:39.197]Really he shared a book that he thought I needed to read
- [00:01:41.197]and I had a book that he needed to read.
- [00:01:43.567]But this book was really, truly a game changer for me.
- [00:01:47.588]The book, if you wanna add this to your good reads list,
- [00:01:51.178]is The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly.
- [00:01:53.248]It is a New York Times and Wall Street best seller.
- [00:01:54.645]So it is a good book.
- [00:01:57.692]But it's based on a real company.
- [00:02:00.998]It follows the concept of Dream Manager
- [00:02:04.278]and it demonstrates the powerful results
- [00:02:06.509]that are achieved when a company or team
- [00:02:10.346]helps employees live their dreams.
- [00:02:13.702]It does not give employees money to go out and buy their
- [00:02:18.456]dreams, but it creates this culture for helping them
- [00:02:22.503]think about all of the possibilities
- [00:02:25.063]that their life has for them.
- [00:02:28.649]It challenges us to recreate those dreams
- [00:02:32.786]for ourselves, our teams, and our families.
- [00:02:36.883]Because we're very short on time, I had a video,
- [00:02:40.422]but in your time if you wanna just on YouTube

- [00:02:47.949]This is the video that talks about this actual company
- [00:02:49.264]that's portrayed in The Dream Manager book.
- [00:02:53.179]It talks about what kind of impact this concept had
- [00:02:57.937]on their company and on employees and their business.
- [00:03:02.470]So dreams.
- [00:03:04.051]They fuel our optimism for the future.
- [00:03:06.901]Matthew Kelly, the author, says that hope in and for our
- [00:03:09.289]future produces engagement in every area of our life.
- [00:03:13.607]So I can tell you that when I'm actively working
- [00:03:15.823]on a dream of mine and I'm pursuing it, I'm excited.
- [00:03:21.020]I get up in the morning.
- [00:03:23.003]I'm not afraid to get up at 4:30, 5:30 in the morning
- [00:03:26.312]to be working towards that dream,
- [00:03:28.553]working towards that goal.
- [00:03:30.846]Studies show that people who are optimistic
- [00:03:32.631]about the future are 50% more likely to say
- [00:03:35.888]that they're very happy about the present.
- [00:03:39.052]So when we're hopeful and excited about the future,
- [00:03:42.125]we're happy about today.
- [00:03:43.347]So how can we focus on our dreams
- [00:03:45.449]and help others do the same?
- [00:03:47.961]So today we're gonna spend some time,
- [00:03:49.199]you're gonna do some dreamstorming of your own today.
- [00:03:53.401]But I'd like to see a show of hands.
- [00:03:55.169]Who in this room maybe has a bucket list?
- [00:04:00.193]Okay, good.
- [00:04:02.005]My bucket list really kinda started out
- [00:04:03.867]as a list of 40 things I wanted to do before I turned 40.
- [00:04:10.267]Then I turned 30 and I was like wait, that's only
- [00:04:14.188]10 years off and I reached these, I'm limiting myself.
- [00:04:18.694]Why stop at 40?
- [00:04:21.297]So then I set it for 100.
- [00:04:22.592]Now I think I'm to maybe 185 different dreams
- [00:04:25.751]that I've put into my dream list, my dream book.
- [00:04:29.818]I keep adding to those and tackling some of those.
- [00:04:34.755]When I started my bucket list, my dream list,
- [00:04:38.724]I thought, you know what?
- [00:04:40.221]I'm gonna run a 5K.
- [00:04:42.251]That's gonna be one of my dreams.
- [00:04:43.715]I'm not a runner.
- [00:04:45.012]I'm not even an athlete.
- [00:04:47.055]I was the kid at basketball practice
- [00:04:49.277]who when we had to do the drills with the basketball
- [00:04:52.486]dribbling down the court,
- [00:04:54.368]the boys were waiting for the gym time
- [00:04:57.606]and we're finishing up our drills
- [00:05:00.559]and so I've got the basketball and I'm dribbling
- [00:05:02.691]and running and I trip over my own feet.
- [00:05:06.084]Right in front of the guys.
- [00:05:08.822]I knew then that I was not an athlete.
- [00:05:10.155]But I thought, you know what?
- [00:05:10.988]I wanna try this 5K thing.
- [00:05:13.528]I wanna see what it's all about.
- [00:05:15.566]So I set that out, have finished a 5K,
- [00:05:18.105]have even done a half marathon.
- [00:05:20.650]But I still don't consider myself a runner.
- [00:05:21.942]I set these kind of dreams of saying
- [00:05:25.206]hey I wanna tackle these things.
- [00:05:28.399]So, when was the last time some of you actually
- [00:05:31.489]wrote down your dreams that you have?
- [00:05:34.687]Those that you have a bucket list.
- [00:05:36.254]When was the last time you maybe added to your list
- [00:05:39.070]or wrote something down?

- [00:05:48.796]So on your bucket list, of those that you have
- [00:05:51.357]a list already, how many would you say are on your list?

- [00:06:04.235]or something visual that you can see to keep you reaching.
- [00:06:08.857]So this dreamstorming session that we're going to do
- [00:06:10.937]is really going to help you identify some more
- [00:06:13.424]of your dreams and encourage you really to go after them.
- [00:06:17.609]So I call it dreamstorming.
- [00:06:20.046]But we have to do it with a few rules.
- [00:06:22.199]So I want you to dream without limits.
- [00:06:25.850]Any bankers in the room?
- [00:06:29.861]Okay well don't dream like a banker.
- [00:06:34.093]I love bankers but no limits.
- [00:06:38.747]Like you cannot think of any oh I can't afford that
- [00:06:43.244]or that's just not in the budget.

- [00:06:47.960]Don't think about your past.
- [00:06:49.607]This is a brand new fresh start.
- [00:06:53.555]If you see someone jotting something down
- [00:06:55.677]or someone says something out loud,
- [00:06:57.724]it's okay to share someone else's dream.
- [00:07:00.814]I want you to write down just as many dreams
- [00:07:02.345]as you can today.
- [00:07:04.257]So how many of you have paper or have
- [00:07:06.011]something you can write on?
- [00:07:08.328]If you have a smartphone, I started out in the notepad
- [00:07:11.190]app of my phone.
- [00:07:13.322]I've went to Evernote now to capture my dream list.
- [00:07:17.052]But I wanna encourage you just to write
- [00:07:20.060]every dream that comes down to mind today.
- [00:07:24.977]And number them 'cause I wanna see how many
- [00:07:26.875]you can think of today.
- [00:07:28.910]I'm also gonna ask you to share if you feel comfortable.
- [00:07:33.650]Some dreams we may be really proud of to share
- [00:07:37.700]and some of 'em may feel a little bit more private.
- [00:07:41.104]That's it's more of a personal achievement
- [00:07:43.599]that we wanna go for that we maybe don't want others,
- [00:07:47.046]when I was training for my half marathon,
- [00:07:48.825]nobody knew I was really training for my half marathon
- [00:07:52.339]because I was afraid of, okay what if I fail?
- [00:07:55.570]I'm not gonna tell anyone but I'm gonna work towards this.
- [00:07:58.263]After I did the race, I survived it,
- [00:08:00.425]I didn't have to be hauled off in the ambulance,
- [00:08:02.581]then I posted on Facebook and I had so many people say
- [00:08:06.646]I didn't know you were working towards a half marathon.
- [00:08:09.425]So you don't have to share.
- [00:08:10.677]Only if you're comfortable.
- [00:08:11.933]I want this to be a fun activity for you.
- [00:08:16.977]So again, you receive an enormous personal fortune.
- [00:08:21.798]What dreams would you fulfill or what would you do?
- [00:08:25.670]So money is no object right now.
- [00:08:29.297]So the first question I'm gonna ask you
- [00:08:30.965]is if you could travel to any six places in the world,
- [00:08:34.797]which six, and you don't have to limit yourself to six,
- [00:08:38.274]but which places would you visit?
- [00:08:41.387]If you could take a road trip with anyone,
- [00:08:43.788]who would you road trip with?
- [00:08:48.019]Which concert or event would you like
- [00:08:50.008]to experience from front row?
- [00:08:54.396]What aspect of your physical health
- [00:08:56.673]would you maybe like to improve?

- [00:09:26.668]we're just doing some brainstorming

- [00:09:31.237]some of the dreams that come to mind
- [00:09:32.817]with some of these questions that I'm asking.
- [00:09:38.685]What's your dream job?
- [00:09:42.587]If someone gave you 500 dollars today,
- [00:09:46.054]what would be your dream impulse purchase today?
- [00:09:50.535]Our dreams don't always have to be material things.
- [00:09:54.118]So I'm going to ask you some next questions
- [00:09:56.079]what are some skills or abilities that you
- [00:10:01.784]would like to possess or develop in yourself?
- [00:10:07.635]What is one relationship that you would like to improve?
- [00:10:12.892]What qualities do you want to be remembered for?
- [00:10:19.868]What personal habit would you like to eliminate
- [00:10:22.852]from your life or from your routine?
- [00:10:28.968]So in Matthew Kelly's book, he talks about
- [00:10:31.010]the different categories that each of our dreams fall into.
- [00:10:36.705]So our dreams may fall into the adventure category.
- [00:10:40.592]So maybe think about if fear wasn't,
- [00:10:43.972]if you had no fear, or if there's some sort
- [00:10:48.437]of adventurous type thing that you'd like to do,
- [00:10:53.025]go ahead and write that down on your sheet too.
- [00:10:56.770]Here's some examples.
- [00:11:00.788]Another category that the author talks about is material.
- [00:11:05.726]But again, this doesn't have to be material things.
- [00:11:08.136]Maybe it's you're wanting to de-clutter your life.
- [00:11:11.994]Organize your space.
- [00:11:13.753]Donate clothes that you don't wear.
- [00:11:19.353]Maybe it's going to the factory that your car
- [00:11:21.631]was made and driving it home from there.
- [00:11:24.839]Or doing the same with a camper.
- [00:11:27.975]So if you could think of any dreams
- [00:11:29.957]that maybe fall under the material category.
- [00:11:34.605]Physical, maybe it's being a certain weight.
- [00:11:37.210]Maybe it's eating more vegetables.
- [00:11:43.355]Maybe it's just simply looking and feeling healthy.
- [00:11:47.987]There's also emotional category.
- [00:11:51.432]So maybe it's if you have children, encouraging your own
- [00:11:54.866]children and your own family members to pursue their dreams.
- [00:11:58.778]Being in a great relationship.
- [00:12:00.608]Re-establishing a friendship.
- [00:12:02.038]Reaching out to someone.
- [00:12:03.793]Maybe there's a high school or college friend
- [00:12:06.691]that you've lost touch with and maybe
- [00:12:08.663]you wanna bring back that friendship into your life.

- [00:12:17.492]I'm naturally a learner so a lot of my dreams
- [00:12:20.444]are also learning random things.
- [00:12:24.150]So maybe you want to learn about a certain topic.
- [00:12:29.768]Maybe you're wanting to learn how to cook
- [00:12:32.820]this certain dish.
- [00:12:35.429]For me, it was something as simple as an angel food cake.
- [00:12:39.008]I was scared of an angel food cake growing up.
- [00:12:41.617]My mom would always tell us don't bounce around
- [00:12:45.919]in the kitchen when the angel food cake was cooking.
- [00:12:48.388]So I was always just afraid of an angel food cake.
- [00:12:54.281]Maybe you have a stack of books that you already have
- [00:12:56.631]in your library and you just want to simply read those.
- [00:13:01.795]Or maybe it's taking on a new genre of literature
- [00:13:04.447]that you're wanting to read.
- [00:13:07.226]Imagination is much more important than knowledge.
- [00:13:12.525]What I'm trying to do with this session is really
- [00:13:16.076]to help spark your imagination to think about really
- [00:13:19.156]all of the possibilities of what could be
- [00:13:21.449]when you turn on that dream switch.
- [00:13:25.397]We also have a spiritual category.
- [00:13:28.271]A spiritual category can be anything from learning
- [00:13:30.773]the different books of the Bible
- [00:13:32.328]or developing greater inner peace.
- [00:13:35.381]Maybe it's learning about the different world religions
- [00:13:38.028]that are on our globe.
- [00:13:41.790]It can be anything.
- [00:13:44.505]Professional.
- [00:13:46.072]Kind of think about where you're at today
- [00:13:48.317]in your professional role.
- [00:13:51.439]What are some goals you would like to set for yourself?
- [00:13:55.243]What are some dreams that you have for yourself
- [00:13:57.841]in this current role you're in?
- [00:14:00.585]Maybe you're wanting to explore out.
- [00:14:04.921]Maybe you're working for a promotion.
- [00:14:08.155]Maybe you're wanting to start your own company.
- [00:14:12.210]Maybe it's building a great team
- [00:14:14.693]and a great culture in your workplace.

- [00:14:29.268]This can be simply overcoming a fear.

- [00:14:35.760]Trying to be able to unplug from work while on vacation.
- [00:14:39.605]Again all of these mind type dreams for ourselves.

- [00:14:47.242]Maybe you wanna pay off a debt.
- [00:14:49.099]Maybe you wanna buy a home.
- [00:14:51.484]Maybe it's setting and sticking to a personal budget.
- [00:14:56.052]Maybe you're also thinking that someday
- [00:14:58.840]you would like to create a scholarship
- [00:15:01.531]for those in your profession
- [00:15:05.311]or for those in your community in your name.
- [00:15:10.568]Some of these dreams, you'll kind of see
- [00:15:12.052]that they kind of fall into different categories.
- [00:15:14.592]The scholarship one, well it's a financial type dream.
- [00:15:22.630]It also will fall into a legacy category
- [00:15:25.308]that we'll talk about.
- [00:15:27.359]Creative.
- [00:15:28.730]This creative category can be anything from learning
- [00:15:30.916]how to play a musical instrument,
- [00:15:33.539]maybe it's just simply working on a hobby.
- [00:15:40.382]So this is who do we want to be known for?
- [00:15:45.470]Maybe we wanna be known to our family and friends
- [00:15:49.199]that we have a great amount of patience
- [00:15:51.981]or we're really great listeners or we're a great friend.
- [00:15:58.144]Maybe it's also the habit of journaling every day.
- [00:16:04.612]Legacy.
- [00:16:05.507]What do we also wanna be know for?
- [00:16:08.412]Maybe it's joining a non-profit and becoming
- [00:16:11.532]actively involved with that.
- [00:16:14.506]Maybe it's helping to contribute to the development
- [00:16:18.757]of your team and your staff in your workplace.
- [00:16:21.834]Donating to your favorite charity.
- [00:16:25.407]So I want you to spend a few minutes
- [00:16:26.680]with those around you at your tables
- [00:16:29.446]or those that you're seated by,
- [00:16:31.364]go ahead and share one dream

- [00:16:51.572]In O'Neill, and all across Nebraska, she tries
- [00:16:57.018]to get everyone to celebrate high five Friday.
- [00:16:59.083]So when you came in, I was giving a lot of you high fives
- [00:17:01.796]but I couldn't catch all of you.
- [00:17:04.373]But last night she shared with me one of her dreams.
- [00:17:07.004]She said it would be a dream of hers to be able
- [00:17:09.724]to get everyone at CYN to do one big high five picture.
- [00:17:16.102]So we're gonna start with this break out group
- [00:17:17.931]'cause you guys are an awesome group.
- [00:17:20.002]You're gonna help Quana achieve one of her dreams today.
- [00:17:23.313]So if you could all stand up.
- [00:17:30.202]Alright and so to your neighbor, go ahead and give

- [00:18:02.302]each December he jots down what he's accomplished
- [00:18:06.225]and what he wants to accomplish for the next year.
- [00:18:10.321]I love December for that purpose but I also found out
- [00:18:14.437]that for me, I love to just sit down every Sunday morning
- [00:18:18.401]early before the house wakes up and just jot down
- [00:18:22.736]what am I working on?
- [00:18:25.166]What am I putting the time towards some of these dreams?
- [00:18:28.036]And really kind of turning those dreams into goals
- [00:18:32.000]which are really dreams with a deadline.
- [00:18:34.599]So engage, if you found part of the dreamstorming session
- [00:18:40.225]today, bits and pieces of it, really empowering,
- [00:18:44.217]I encourage you just to sit down and ask yourself
- [00:18:47.716]more questions and write down dreams
- [00:18:50.427]as you talk to each other, as you go throughout
- [00:18:53.637]the conference today, learn from each other
- [00:18:56.863]and find out what are we all working towards
- [00:18:59.028]and working on and taking that experience with you.

- [00:19:11.457]it helps give us that extra boost

- [00:19:51.100]So in our group, we were sharing our dreams
- [00:19:54.211]and some of us were saying this would be great
- [00:19:59.032]if we did this and we kind of have plans to do it.
- [00:20:02.233]But life gets in the way.
- [00:20:04.259]Do you have any suggestions or heard of action steps
- [00:20:09.650]to actually take to accomplish these dreams?
- [00:20:12.821]Yeah, that's a great strategy.
- [00:20:15.212]I feel like today with just the time that we had,
- [00:20:18.212]the dreamstorming, but I suggest taking one or two
- [00:20:24.491]of those dreams that you're actively wanting to pursue
- [00:20:26.764]and really break it down into a timeline.
- [00:20:29.550]How you're wanting to accomplish it.
- [00:20:31.013]Because yes, we know life gets in the way.
- [00:20:33.101]When I was training for my half marathon,
- [00:20:38.568]I ended up being guardian conservator for my grandfather.
- [00:20:43.526]That was a huge responsibility that I had.
- [00:20:47.549]I also had a daughter who had lots of stomach issues.
- [00:20:51.962]I probably wasn't the most properly trained person
- [00:20:55.061]when I was running that half marathon.
- [00:20:57.927]But I said to myself I'm gonna still go out and do it.
- [00:21:01.845]I wasn't going to win or compete against anybody
- [00:21:05.145]but just really for myself.
- [00:21:06.799]So yes time and life and obstacles and burdens
- [00:21:10.265]can all really get in our way.
- [00:21:12.711]But I think that when we have those dreams
- [00:21:15.998]and we have that plan to be able to reach those dreams
- [00:21:18.754]that's when those life events and those obstacles
- [00:21:22.874]can keep us moving forward and help us stay positive.
- [00:21:26.972]Whereas, I think had I not had some specific dreams
- [00:21:29.783]and goals I was going for when I had,
- [00:21:31.676]I had probably 12, 18 months over these last two years
- [00:21:38.087]where anything that was thrown at me was thrown at me.
- [00:21:42.206]Sorry, I'm getting kinda teary-eyed.
- [00:21:45.222]But because I had these things I was working for
- [00:21:47.331]I think that's really what kind of saved me
- [00:21:49.925]from going into this deep rut of really a depression.
- [00:21:54.919]I wanted to stay positive and keep working towards those.
- [00:21:57.744]So yeah I think just setting that time frame.
- [00:22:00.962]Visiting it each week.
- [00:22:05.110]I think that helps.
- [00:22:06.445]Just kind of taking time out of, as young professionals,
- [00:22:10.509]we're pulled in a lot of different directions.
- [00:22:13.010]We have work demands, family demands, friends
- [00:22:16.968]that we wanna stay in touch with
- [00:22:19.566]and even some community responsibilities.
- [00:22:22.450]So it can be overwhelming, but we have to take
- [00:22:25.224]that little bit of time each week, or maybe it's a month,
- [00:22:29.709]maybe it's just every quarter that you sit down
- [00:22:32.238]and this is your time to really plan that out
- [00:22:35.677]and try to stay focused with it.
- [00:22:39.251]But I think breaking it down into manageable,
- [00:22:41.140]so looking at it from, okay the next 30 days
- [00:22:46.431]this is what I'm going to do to help me reach that dream.
- [00:22:50.932]If it's running a half marathon, okay in the next 30 days
- [00:22:53.118]I'm gonna make sure that I'm signing up
- [00:22:55.378]for my gym membership.
- [00:22:57.200]I'm going to start drinking more water.
- [00:22:59.123]I'm gonna eat more vegetables.
- [00:23:03.776]I'm gonna watch my carbs that I take in.
- [00:23:07.052]Just really being very strategic in that certain amount
- [00:23:10.646]of timeframe to be able to work towards that end dream.

- [00:24:35.376]So she had put down she wanted to attend
- [00:24:38.005]a swim trials event.
- [00:24:41.772]So she set that goal, that dream, in 2013
- [00:24:46.413]when we were doing a little session.
- [00:24:48.840]I was doing the session, just talking with my girls.
- [00:24:53.088]So we then helped make a plan.
- [00:24:56.151]Okay when the swim trials are in Omaha in 16,
- [00:24:59.437]what do we need to do to be able to get there?
- [00:25:05.233]So that's been fun and encouraging to help support
- [00:25:08.688]not only my kids but also friends who are working
- [00:25:11.766]towards different dreams and goals.
- [00:25:14.288]There were a few times in my half marathon journey
- [00:25:17.325]that my husband said are you sure you want to do this?
- [00:25:22.171]I don't think you're ready, he said.
- [00:25:25.423]To me, that was even more motivation.
- [00:25:31.453]Like yes I am doing it.
- [00:25:36.445]So between him and my sister who were like I don't know
- [00:25:39.223]if this is the right thing for you
- [00:25:41.459]and again, are you sure?
- [00:25:44.525]It was my motivation to even do it
- [00:25:45.941]and I would just come back saying well, somebody's gotta
- [00:25:49.396]be last and I don't care if it's me.
- [00:25:53.079]But I think you can use it as motivation.
- [00:25:54.956]But I think just being strong and knowing your end goal
- [00:26:01.754]to your dream can help with that negativity and naysay.
