- [00:00:00.745](upbeat music)
- [00:00:10.821]Courtney and Jamie were both in Curtis,
- [00:00:12.246]and there is their four projects that they worked on.
- [00:00:16.515]The big ones that I was informed of
- [00:00:18.898]was the recycling program, and the entrepreneurship center
- [00:00:21.890]were the ones they went in to Curtis knowing about,
- [00:00:24.599]and then they did pick up those last two.
- [00:00:27.938]So the NCTA Recycling took up a large portion
- [00:00:30.670]of their summer.
- [00:00:32.943]They did do a fair amount of grant writing,
- [00:00:34.489]so they learned a little bit more about that process.
- [00:00:38.956]Did surveys once there were some students on campus,
- [00:00:43.666]and they were looking at a couple different logistics
- [00:00:46.244]and how to really incorporate recycling into NCTA.
- [00:00:50.546]Pretty promising results.
- [00:00:53.258]They had two phases they went through.
- [00:00:58.294]Here are their survey results they came up with.
- [00:01:01.754]So, very very much a willingness to recycle,
- [00:01:04.994]and implement this program.
- [00:01:06.853]NCTA did get a lot of dialogue going,
- [00:01:10.309]both with students as well as faculty at NCTA as well.
- [00:01:17.783]Like I said, a huge willingness
- [00:01:19.724]to incorporate a program like this at NCTA.
- [00:01:25.565]The 4-H day.
- [00:01:26.704]This is where they kind of took this recycling idea
- [00:01:29.674]and took it away from NCTA
- [00:01:31.014]and implemented it in the community.
- [00:01:32.525]So, the 4-H day,
- [00:01:34.137]they actually created a couple different games
- [00:01:36.327]and a couple different things for some of the local kids
- [00:01:39.870]to do that were recycling focused
- [00:01:42.415]and was presented in a way that was joint with NCTA
- [00:01:47.820]so people were aware that, okay,
- [00:01:49.553]recycling's a good thing to do,
- [00:01:50.684]but take the lead from NCTA
- [00:01:54.840]so that people were seeing all of these things going on,
- [00:01:57.594]but they could also look to NCTA and say, okay,
- [00:01:59.779]the college is on the bandwagon,
- [00:02:00.922]maybe it's our turn to do so as well.
- [00:02:03.931]Community Leadership Status.
- [00:02:05.270]This is one I'm not too familiar with,
- [00:02:07.464]so Kurt, I don't know if you have any more--
- [00:02:14.230]Andrew, this is a state program
- [00:02:17.421]that's administered by the Nebraska Department
- [00:02:20.493]of Economic Development,
- [00:02:22.879]and it's a certification program.
- [00:02:25.036]Basically, communities apply for it.
- [00:02:28.567]If you meet certain criteria,
- [00:02:30.864]if you're designated
- [00:02:32.043]a Nebraska certified leadership community,
- [00:02:35.077]it puts you at the head of the line
- [00:02:38.032]for future grant opportunities.
- [00:02:40.742]Location One Website.
- [00:02:42.502]This is something that was worked on
- [00:02:47.393]to try and make Curtis a little bit more of a landing point.
- [00:02:49.978]So, trying to find those places in Curtis
- [00:02:52.792]that are open that people can move in to.
- [00:02:55.573]Since a lot of times small communities don't have
- [00:02:58.083]the ability or even the know how
- [00:03:00.897]to promote some of these empty houses,
- [00:03:04.064]or vacant lots where people can build,
- [00:03:05.900]so trying to promote Curtis and it's development,
- [00:03:09.783]like it says there.
- [00:03:11.927]And the last one was an Entrepreneurship Center,
- [00:03:14.253]and this one was kind of worked on a lot at the tail end
- [00:03:18.682]of their internship.
- [00:03:20.118]So, it's essentially a business incubator
- [00:03:22.545]where it's really promoting some local entrepreneurship
- [00:03:26.422]to try and make sure that the entrepreneurs stay in the area
- [00:03:32.991]Southwest Nebraska has a lot of entrepreneurs in the areas,
- [00:03:35.900]I found out when I was in McCook, and Curtis is no exception
- [00:03:39.206]especially with the college in town.
- [00:03:42.218]It's a huge asset, if Curtis is able to push this through.
- [00:03:46.544]Like it says there are some complications with the EPA
- [00:03:50.703]while they were there this summer.
- [00:03:56.162]They did have a couple volunteer opportunities.
- [00:04:00.500]They participated in the Rotary Clean up, like it says there
- [00:04:03.888]This was, I believe, toward the beginning of the summer,
- [00:04:06.990]so they did kind of get to break the ice early and often.
- [00:04:10.917]They wrote weekly news articles through the newspaper
- [00:04:16.812]and got to strike up a relationship.
- [00:04:18.575]Curtis actually publishes it's paper through Cambridge,
- [00:04:21.970]I believe it is.
- [00:04:23.414]So, not only did they build a relationship with the paper
- [00:04:26.905]in Cambridge, but also Ashley Gerlach
- [00:04:31.456]who is the Southwest representative
- [00:04:35.891]for Nebraska Economic Development.
- [00:04:37.936]So they got to build that relationship as well,
- [00:04:40.640]and I think it helped out a lot toward the end of the summer
- [00:04:48.047]They did one travel arrangement to the Solid Waste Agency
- [00:04:53.239]while they were developing this recycling program as well.
- [00:04:58.260]So they're working on trying to align some of Curtis' goals
- [00:05:01.878]with what they're doing at that agency.
- [00:05:06.602]This is their invitation for you to reach out to them
- [00:05:10.095]to make sure that if you have any questions,
- [00:05:12.266]if you would like to know anything further
- [00:05:13.748]about their experience, go ahead,
- [00:05:15.577]I'm sure hopefully Kurt can pass along this information.
