- [00:00:00.270]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, Yodel Oh!
- [00:00:04.338](thumping music)
- [00:00:17.162]Hi I'm Zoe Falls
- [00:00:18.573]and today we are gonna talk about Yodel Oh!
- [00:00:21.343]And Yodel Oh! is a math app
- [00:00:23.823]that you get to choose whether you want to do
- [00:00:26.819]addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
- [00:00:28.727]or you can mix it up and try all of them.
- [00:00:31.674]And it is a speed game.
- [00:00:32.802]So this isn't recommended for students
- [00:00:34.781]that are just learning.
- [00:00:37.015]It is recommended for those that have learnt
- [00:00:39.640]and are trying to prove proficiency
- [00:00:42.696]maybe increase their speed and ability to
- [00:00:46.126]quickly do math
- [00:00:48.059]and the music is kind of amazing.
- [00:00:51.117]I recommend having the sound on when you play it.
- [00:00:53.510]If you look up, you see our little buddy
- [00:00:55.664]Hans is climbing the mountain.
- [00:00:57.634]And we get a math problem in the window
- [00:00:59.476]and we have to select the right target
- [00:01:01.821]and if it is green,
- [00:01:05.489]it will be good.
- [00:01:09.760]Then if it is not, he will move back down the mountain
- [00:01:12.961]so our goal is we want to get him climbing
- [00:01:15.478]up the mountain.
- [00:01:19.524]And again it is kind of fun, really easy
- [00:01:23.062]and it is a touch.
- [00:01:23.895]So you can do it with younger learners
- [00:01:27.169]so one of the other things about this app
- [00:01:29.668]is you can go back then and make it harder.
- [00:01:32.679]So we are gonna go through
- [00:01:33.857]and we are gonna go real crazy here
- [00:01:35.801]and try all the different types of math.
- [00:01:40.172]And again we have our countdown.
- [00:01:42.318]It says get ready.
- [00:01:44.761]11 divided by 11.
- [00:01:51.724]And again like speed matters in this
- [00:01:55.408]so if you take too long
- [00:01:58.142]you notice they stay red
- [00:02:00.457]and it keeps moving up the mountain.
- [00:02:18.125]So if we keep getting it wrong
- [00:02:19.846]he will continue to climb up the mountain
- [00:02:21.972]until he falls off.
- [00:02:24.386]And then he gets pushed up the mountain
- [00:02:25.645]by surprised Billy goat
- [00:02:28.306]but again so the goal is to
- [00:02:30.043]answer them correctly
- [00:02:31.658]but you get some really kind of interesting interactions
- [00:02:34.105]if they are wrong
- [00:02:39.003]and you can also hit the targets to keep them from
- [00:02:41.777]knocking poor Hans off the mountain.
- [00:02:45.923]So again this app really is not designed to
- [00:02:48.636]teach students how to do math
- [00:02:50.422]but if you were practicing before a quiz
- [00:02:52.480]or you do speed drills or skill drills
- [00:02:55.049]this would be a really great way to have them
- [00:02:57.873]practice and kind of test themselves as they
- [00:03:01.209]move froward.
- [00:03:02.397]It is also something that you could set up
- [00:03:03.859]some kind of friendly competition,
- [00:03:05.316]see who can keep Hans on the mountain longest.
- [00:03:08.732]Keep track of mastery in each separate type of basic math
- [00:03:14.771]which I think is one of the features I really like about it
- [00:03:16.886]so you can have a student that maybe
- [00:03:18.901]they are really in addition
- [00:03:20.010]so they need to focus on that
- [00:03:21.779]but multiplication, multiplication is a little rough
- [00:03:24.137]as far as speed.
- [00:03:25.630]So maybe they spend their time working on multiplication.
- [00:03:28.675]When you get the students that
- [00:03:30.013]really want to challenge themselves
- [00:03:32.068]or feel like they've really got a good handle
- [00:03:34.320]on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
- [00:03:36.504]they can do all four.
- [00:03:38.626]And I think that's a really strong strength of the game
- [00:03:42.834]but I also feel that it is a little one dimensional,
- [00:03:46.734]in that that's kind of all there is to it.
- [00:03:50.155]There don't seem to be different levels
- [00:03:55.277]except for maybe they consider each type of math a level
- [00:04:00.035]but it definitely has some strengths to it.
- [00:04:06.677]And that is Yodel Oh!
- [00:04:09.811]And thank you for joining me on
