- [00:00:11.292]We have a financial literacy concert going on.
- [00:00:14.176]We're at Pound Middle School today.
- [00:00:16.104]We have the entire 8th grade
- [00:00:17.859]and they are currently listening
- [00:00:19.223]to some rock n' roll music.
- [00:00:20.681]It's a really high energy, fun show
- [00:00:22.859]after which they're going to be introduced
- [00:00:24.762]to some financial literacy concepts
- [00:00:26.831]from the band that has now
- [00:00:28.414]established themselves to be cool (laughs).
- [00:00:30.828]Folks, to me, the most rock n' roll thing in the world
- [00:00:33.277]is that young people get to take all that future
- [00:00:37.241]and do everything they can with it.
- [00:00:39.169]Learning can be fun and should be fun
- [00:00:42.361]and when you can bring an entertainment in
- [00:00:44.436]to incorporate that into the learning
- [00:00:46.519]and provide the learning, in this case,
- [00:00:49.043]it's great and the kids are very, very into it.
- [00:00:52.052]How would you make money as a teen
- [00:00:54.262]who couldn't get a job?
- [00:00:55.736]What's a good credit score?
- [00:00:57.804]It is so important for kids to have this information
- [00:01:00.203]and to be financially literate
- [00:01:01.833]because this is a life skill,
- [00:01:03.494]so it is this area that can affect
- [00:01:05.140]the rest of their lives.
- [00:01:06.488]If we can get them early with this information
- [00:01:08.729]and have them, for example, just start saving early,
- [00:01:11.237]it changes the entire direction,
- [00:01:12.632]the entire course of their financial future.
- [00:01:15.198](drum roll)
- [00:01:17.983]'Cause I think it's entertaining
- [00:01:18.986]and it hooks the audience
- [00:01:20.538]and then so they're ready to listen
- [00:01:22.582]and they're inspired by the singers.
- [00:01:24.494]So we know how to manage our money better
- [00:01:26.971]and so we don't go into debt
- [00:01:29.665]or do anything bad with our money.
- [00:01:32.142](uptempo music)
- [00:01:36.828]We're doing almost 50 schools this three months
- [00:01:40.073]and we have another 50 coming up in the spring.
- [00:01:42.086]We've reached over 50,000 kids so far
- [00:01:44.187]and we just want to keep it going
- [00:01:45.441]and find other groups to do this.
- [00:01:47.180]You can see it just in their reaction
- [00:01:48.664]of the students and the Q and A period
- [00:01:50.475]and they're asking these great, thoughtful questions.
- [00:01:53.766]What is a good spending budget to have?
- [00:01:56.177]After the fact, we have little postcards
- [00:01:58.949]where they have them go online
- [00:02:00.172]and they enter their SMART goals.
- [00:02:01.720]So, they talk about, "I'm gonna start budgeting now
- [00:02:03.646]"and I'm gonna start saving now,"
- [00:02:04.707]so we definitely see the impact from that.
