- [00:00:05.069]We live about nine miles away.
- [00:00:06.894]Hi!
- [00:00:08.836]We bike here, I drop the kids off.
- [00:00:11.144]It gets us out of the car and gets us out on the trails.
- [00:00:15.457]You know, the kids being outside and exploring
- [00:00:17.497]and playing in the dirt and all that kind of stuff.
- [00:00:19.712]That's exactly what I wanted.
- [00:00:21.603]Put your seed down in there, push it in.
- [00:00:23.403]We're bringing different groups of kids out
- [00:00:25.672]to plant all the different plots with different produce.
- [00:00:29.032]The rest of the growing season, just monitor
- [00:00:31.262]and help our plants grow and then we're going to harvest
- [00:00:33.462]and eat whatever produce that we have growing.
- [00:00:38.002]One of the mottoes that I've always had
- [00:00:39.264]at the Child Development Laboratory is,
- [00:00:41.054]it's more important to help children learn how to think
- [00:00:45.454]than to teach children what to think.
- [00:00:47.644]Children get to learn things through play
- [00:00:50.033]and we observe their play and document their play
- [00:00:52.122]and that's where we see the learning.
- [00:00:56.045]I think this place is special for Jasper,
- [00:00:58.528]in that I think he's just a sponge right now,
- [00:01:01.762]his development.
- [00:01:02.660]The amount of learning and growing he's actually doing,
- [00:01:05.722]it's pretty incredible.
- [00:01:08.481]He's exploding.
- [00:01:09.679]Exploding.
- [00:01:10.735]Here too Jasper.
- [00:01:13.492]The brain is growing rapidly during those early years
- [00:01:17.197]and we're really laying the foundation for children
- [00:01:20.156]to be successful throughout their academic career.
- [00:01:23.215]Watch, my car is going to go backwards.
- [00:01:25.455]Even at this youngest age group, they're starting
- [00:01:28.026]to build skills that they'll use for the rest of their life.
- [00:01:31.439]And you can draw one of your favorite animals
- [00:01:34.914]you've seen on our field site visits.
- [00:01:39.074]The teachers here at the lab school really help facilitate
- [00:01:42.062]children being just interested in being
- [00:01:45.411]really open to the world around them.
- [00:01:48.166]It's representing their experiences
- [00:01:52.110]so they can build from those.
- [00:01:55.405]And the teaching that takes place
- [00:01:56.387]in the Child Development Lab is really helping
- [00:01:59.178]our college students put into practice the theory
- [00:02:03.496]and the strategies and the instructional practices
- [00:02:06.716]that they've learned about in their classes.
- [00:02:08.665]Anywhere I go, they are always like,
- [00:02:10.756]"Oh, you go to the University of Nebraska?
- [00:02:13.511]That has a great program!"
- [00:02:15.165]We have been intentional as teachers
- [00:02:17.476]to document this process
- [00:02:19.493]and to make the learning visible to parents.
- [00:02:21.834]Those are worms!
- [00:02:23.937]We need to be contributing to the body of knowledge.
- [00:02:26.486]We are open to different faculty members, not only from
- [00:02:30.846]within the college of education and human sciences,
- [00:02:34.038]but other colleges as well coming and doing research here.
- [00:02:37.817]We also, then, want to implement and translate
- [00:02:41.217]that research into practice for our students.
- [00:02:44.877]The experience is excellent.
- [00:02:47.005]She enjoys everyday staying at Ruth Staples.
- [00:02:50.107]She loves teachers here, she loves all the facilities.
- [00:02:53.721]She loves, I would say, everything here.
- [00:02:55.952]We really are a model program
- [00:02:57.662]for early childhood education.
- [00:02:59.241]So we oftentimes have groups coming actually
- [00:03:01.643]from all across the state of Nebraska,
- [00:03:03.603]from across the country, and even the world.
- [00:03:05.822]There are so many things that I think I'm proud of
- [00:03:08.211]about the Child Development Laboratory,
- [00:03:10.003]but I think the thing that makes me the most proud
- [00:03:12.544]is when I see the college students who have been
- [00:03:15.203]through our program and then I see them out in the field
- [00:03:17.872]just doing fabulous things.
- [00:03:20.347]And to know that we as a university have had an influence
- [00:03:24.966]upon that is a wonderful feeling.
