- [00:00:00.261]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom Piktochart.
- [00:00:04.599](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.630]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls and today
- [00:00:19.081]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:20.611]we're going to talk about Piktochart.
- [00:00:22.640]So I use Piktochart with my students
- [00:00:24.660]when I want them to really go in
- [00:00:27.110]and synthesize in new information.
- [00:00:30.250]So it's usually a response to new content,
- [00:00:33.487]a new unit, or just information that might
- [00:00:36.288]be new and relatively dense.
- [00:00:40.069]I have them go through and do the reading,
- [00:00:43.352]talk about it amongst themselves,
- [00:00:44.929]maybe do a discussion board,
- [00:00:46.452]some in-class discussion and then
- [00:00:49.249]in groups they design an infographic.
- [00:00:53.305]With Piktochart it's a free website,
- [00:00:56.815]and there are options to purchase
- [00:00:59.636]and schools can get really good discounts
- [00:01:02.126]on purchasing if this is something you use
- [00:01:04.904]and find that you really like,
- [00:01:06.326]but would like to have more options.
- [00:01:09.774]But even at its free level it's really
- [00:01:12.555]a robust program and website for you to go in and use.
- [00:01:17.074]So your students can create their own infographic
- [00:01:19.384]or they can use a template.
- [00:01:23.084]So we're just going to go in and look at a template.
- [00:01:26.945]That is not the template, come back.
- [00:01:32.855]And we're going to go and check out
- [00:01:34.196]the About Me template.
- [00:01:39.165]And one of the things that again I like
- [00:01:40.474]is you can have them do this individually
- [00:01:42.513]or you can have them do this as a group.
- [00:01:44.714]And so in their groups they'll get to share
- [00:01:46.865]their knowledge and work collaboratively
- [00:01:49.394]and then really get into the heart
- [00:01:51.736]of what's going on.
- [00:01:53.216]So with this infographic it kind
- [00:01:55.155]of guides them through the types of things
- [00:01:57.146]that they can put in.
- [00:01:59.525]So they come up with a title.
- [00:02:01.174]And the thing that I convey to my students
- [00:02:03.774]when they're working on their infographics
- [00:02:05.453]is they're conveying a message.
- [00:02:07.374]So as the reader, as the audience,
- [00:02:09.372]I should be able to go through
- [00:02:11.605]and read the story, read the narrative,
- [00:02:13.663]of the information they're trying to tell me
- [00:02:15.826]and walk away knowing something.
- [00:02:18.873]It's a visual elevator speech
- [00:02:20.682]about what they've just learned.
- [00:02:22.864]So we start at the top and it gives information
- [00:02:26.875]so you can put background information,
- [00:02:29.714]you can have them do an about me
- [00:02:30.697]at the beginning of the semester
- [00:02:32.315]as you are trying to get to know your students
- [00:02:34.247]and your students are trying to get to know each other.
- [00:02:37.803]Or it could be background on the topic
- [00:02:39.347]if they have to learn something about the Civil War
- [00:02:43.885]and maybe they have to talk
- [00:02:45.317]more specifically about Gettysburg.
- [00:02:48.008]And maybe within that they have to identify
- [00:02:49.886]one moment, one battle, maybe one leader,
- [00:02:53.697]one soldier, within the Battle of Gettysburg
- [00:02:56.727]that they tell that story.
- [00:02:58.666]And they can pull information from other places,
- [00:03:02.358]from their peers, and they could figure out
- [00:03:04.477]the point of their infographic
- [00:03:07.028]and then they populate it.
- [00:03:09.515]And another feature that I like about this
- [00:03:11.347]is the multi-modality of it.
- [00:03:13.525]So you're encouraging the students
- [00:03:14.885]to use both visual, textual, and even some audio
- [00:03:19.644]and pictorial representations within their infographic.
- [00:03:25.724]So you can insert lines and shapes
- [00:03:27.106]so they can modify everything.
- [00:03:28.625]So even if they use a template they can modify.
- [00:03:32.265]They can add icons.
- [00:03:34.866]So if they're trying to stick with a theme
- [00:03:39.008]they can select one and it automatically
- [00:03:41.417]comes in and you can adjust it for size
- [00:03:44.136]and you can rotate it.
- [00:03:46.923]And you can also add photos.
- [00:03:49.735]So if they have their own photos
- [00:03:50.937]that they'd like to upload they can do that
- [00:03:52.716]plus it comes with a whole slew of photos
- [00:03:56.875]that are already going to be licensed to use
- [00:03:59.627]with this software.
- [00:04:01.164]So they can select from that
- [00:04:02.925]and then they don't have to worry about copyright issues.
- [00:04:05.777]So if you're working with younger students
- [00:04:07.176]or students that are still learning
- [00:04:09.556]how to appropriately cite and use sources
- [00:04:12.436]they find online, that could be helpful.
- [00:04:15.844]And again different photo frames
- [00:04:18.577]if they did something like this number five,
- [00:04:24.804]again there are pictures within it.
- [00:04:26.466]So they can use pictures to represent numbers
- [00:04:29.497]and you can talk through the different,
- [00:04:31.308]what that means, how that helps them,
- [00:04:33.287]conceptualize and visualize what's going on.
- [00:04:37.554]And then the other cool thing is how you can
- [00:04:40.616]have them share and save.
- [00:04:43.768]So in the free version you are limited
- [00:04:46.877]on how they can save it.
- [00:04:49.247]But they can save it as an image
- [00:04:51.506]and then once it's an image most people
- [00:04:56.139]can go ahead and save that image as a pdf if you need to,
- [00:05:01.357]but they can download it as an image
- [00:05:03.136]and send it to you.
- [00:05:04.284]Or you can, they always have a URL with their account
- [00:05:08.166]and you can set up accounts with Google.
- [00:05:10.477]So if your school is using Google Classroom
- [00:05:12.668]or you're a Google school you can just go ahead
- [00:05:15.127]and log in with Google and then your students
- [00:05:17.147]don't have to have another account sign up
- [00:05:19.167]and you as a teacher don't have to worry about
- [00:05:20.697]another sign in and another password.
- [00:05:23.606]So there are other infographic websites out there
- [00:05:28.147]but I like Piktochart because of some of the features.
- [00:05:32.106]I like that you don't have to use a template at all
- [00:05:34.318]if you don't want to.
- [00:05:36.077]And just real quick, it does more than just infographics.
- [00:05:41.485]You can do a presentation.
- [00:05:43.176]So if you have them doing a digital presentation
- [00:05:45.957]it sets up a poster but then it moves them
- [00:05:48.627]through as though it was a presentation.
- [00:05:52.006]They can also do a poster.
- [00:05:53.448]So if you're doing a larger class project
- [00:05:55.738]and they need to make a poster for that,
- [00:05:58.667]there's that option.
- [00:06:00.838]And there's also a report feature.
- [00:06:02.916]So if they've done some sort of survey
- [00:06:06.736]or they're analyzing information, there are ways
- [00:06:11.348]to do graphs and charts where they can represent
- [00:06:14.506]that information and again it still follows
- [00:06:16.816]some of that infographic logic.
- [00:06:19.356]If we look at this one where they're still conveying
- [00:06:21.147]a message and at the end of this infographic
- [00:06:24.488]or this chart you walk away knowing
- [00:06:27.396]sort of the bullet points of what information
- [00:06:29.579]the students found relevant
- [00:06:31.765]and as a teacher it's a good way
- [00:06:32.937]to clue yourself in to what your students are picking up on,
- [00:06:36.315]what information they're synthesizing,
- [00:06:38.143]what they're identifying as important,
- [00:06:40.784]and maybe where the gaps in their knowledge are
- [00:06:42.811]so that you can attend to those later on.
- [00:06:45.524]So this has been Piktochart and I'm Zoe Falls,
- [00:06:48.403]have a great day.
- [00:06:49.863](upbeat music)
