- [00:00:00.206]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.644]Google Forms.
- [00:00:03.794](electronic music)
- [00:00:17.401]I'm Zoe, and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:20.268]we're gonna look at Google Forms.
- [00:00:22.558]I love Google products and I love using them
- [00:00:25.035]in my classroom, and I've found that
- [00:00:26.870]Google Forms can be a really powerful tool,
- [00:00:29.598]especially when I'm trying to get the students
- [00:00:31.734]to engage in peer review processes
- [00:00:34.509]and with group work.
- [00:00:37.029]One of the ways that I've used it in the past,
- [00:00:39.629]and I'm gonna start out showing you
- [00:00:40.746]a couple of different forms and then we'll go back
- [00:00:43.521]and I'll show you how I created them.
- [00:00:46.725]They do a project and they each take turns teaching,
- [00:00:51.207]and then they give their peers feedback on how that went.
- [00:00:56.153]In this way, they fill out the form,
- [00:00:58.625]all of that information is gathered in one place and,
- [00:01:01.191]as the instructor, I can just take the responses
- [00:01:04.221]they've given me and export it to a Google sheet.
- [00:01:08.018]And then I have all of my data, all of my feedback
- [00:01:11.338]in one place, and from that Google form,
- [00:01:14.078]I can collate it and sort it into useful information
- [00:01:17.190]for me, as the teacher, and giving those students
- [00:01:19.581]a low-stakes way to engage in peer review
- [00:01:22.647]because they're typing out their responses
- [00:01:24.701]so it's a little less pressure than having them
- [00:01:26.745]give that verbal feedback face to face,
- [00:01:30.338]and, in both ways, they get to take ownership
- [00:01:33.809]of the project and of the peer review process.
- [00:01:37.133]One of the other ways I use Google Forms
- [00:01:39.394]is when they do group work,
- [00:01:41.090]some students are really resistant to it
- [00:01:43.099]and students feel, sometimes, like they don't have
- [00:01:45.142]an individual voice within the group,
- [00:01:46.895]especially when things don't go that well.
- [00:01:49.031]And in this way, the groups are able to give member reviews.
- [00:01:53.403]So each person in the group
- [00:01:55.110]reviews each member of their group,
- [00:01:57.792]and I set it up so that it's on a scale
- [00:02:01.588]and they get to determine, okay, on this scale,
- [00:02:04.665]my coworker fell here.
- [00:02:07.869]And at the very end, I give them a space where
- [00:02:10.921]they can give narrative feedback
- [00:02:13.359]if what they're thinking or feeling or experiencing
- [00:02:16.262]didn't fall into one of my Likert scale set ups.
- [00:02:21.300]And again, I can take the responses
- [00:02:23.954]and I can put them into a Google sheet,
- [00:02:25.881]and I can sort them through.
- [00:02:27.599]What I like about this,
- [00:02:28.549]especially with this group member review,
- [00:02:30.221]is I can sort it by group name
- [00:02:31.626]once it's in the Google sheet
- [00:02:34.273]and then I can look at the groups and see the trends
- [00:02:36.835]and see what's going on.
- [00:02:38.414]As a teacher, that can be really powerful feedback to know
- [00:02:41.746]how they're interpreting the group project,
- [00:02:43.615]how different groups are assigning tasks, if they are,
- [00:02:47.841]and ways that, as an instructor, I can help facilitate,
- [00:02:51.046]on the front end, the group projects
- [00:02:53.237]so that they can be successful.
- [00:02:55.478]So we'll go back over, and right now,
- [00:02:57.286]I have a blank Google form
- [00:02:59.724]and it default sets to multiple choice questions.
- [00:03:03.776]You can title your Google form and we're gonna call it Test
- [00:03:09.549]and you can give it a short description.
- [00:03:11.654]The other thing you can do with Google Forms
- [00:03:12.896]is you can email them out to students
- [00:03:14.730]so they don't necessarily have to do them in class.
- [00:03:16.948]So they can either do them live or they can do it at home
- [00:03:20.396]and, either way, the information comes to you
- [00:03:22.277]in Google Drive so it's all there, easily accessible.
- [00:03:26.039]And then you ask your question,
- [00:03:29.324]is the sun big?
- [00:03:32.900]And then you can have it be multiple choice,
- [00:03:35.501]but if you click on the little drop down,
- [00:03:38.275]it shows you all of the different options.
- [00:03:40.284]You can have a short answer, a paragraph,
- [00:03:42.629]which is a more narrative answer,
- [00:03:44.336]multiple choice, check boxes,
- [00:03:45.996]so if you want them to select more than one answer,
- [00:03:48.864]drop downs, a linear scale, multiple choice grid,
- [00:03:54.111]time, and then date.
- [00:03:57.478]You can also add images,
- [00:03:59.313]so if you're working with younger students
- [00:04:01.299]or if you're working with ESL students,
- [00:04:05.629]you can use pictures to help bridge that language gap.
- [00:04:10.029]And you can do these content-specific.
- [00:04:12.374]I've also seen teachers that use these as quizzes
- [00:04:15.404]because you can import video, you can import a picture,
- [00:04:19.839]and you can make these as long or as short as you need to.
- [00:04:23.334]You can give subtitles.
- [00:04:24.785]So over here on my peer review form,
- [00:04:28.602]it's broken out into three major sections.
- [00:04:31.881]There's the technology, there's the pedagogy,
- [00:04:34.840]and there's the content.
- [00:04:37.336]And so within those, there are sub-questions.
- [00:04:40.610]You can really format it to your needs
- [00:04:44.104]and to the needs of your learners.
- [00:04:47.092]I've shown you just a couple of ways to use Google Forms
- [00:04:50.088]and I encourage you to as to go out there
- [00:04:52.340]and try a couple, start with something low-stakes,
- [00:04:55.498]one or two questions, see how it goes,
- [00:04:57.640]see how your students respond to it,
- [00:04:59.649]and then maybe try integrating it into a larger assignment
- [00:05:02.934]and see how it goes.
- [00:05:04.304]This is Zoe and, today, we've looked at Google Forms.
