- [00:00:16.748]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls,
- [00:00:18.316]and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:20.122]we're going to look at Twitter.
- [00:00:21.933]Twitter is one of the
- [00:00:23.423]those apps for education
- [00:00:25.072]that I wouldn't have really considered
- [00:00:26.514]until I started teaching a technology course
- [00:00:29.532]and started seeing how other teachers were using it,
- [00:00:31.864]and actually hearing my students tell me
- [00:00:33.814]how they'd seen teachers use it in their own classrooms.
- [00:00:36.797]And one of the things that I like about Twitter
- [00:00:40.022]is as a teacher you can set a hash tag for your class,
- [00:00:42.620]and then you can send out announcements,
- [00:00:44.692]you can send out homework updates,
- [00:00:46.623]and you can link out to other things.
- [00:00:49.286]And it's something that parents can access,
- [00:00:51.427]it's something that the students can access,
- [00:00:53.670]and it's a way to kind of extend that dialogue further.
- [00:00:57.287]I actually had a student last semester
- [00:01:00.050]who got really excited when Twitter added Twitter Polls,
- [00:01:04.266]and showed how you can ask a question
- [00:01:08.621]and it's multiple choice.
- [00:01:11.395]You can set the length of how long you want that poll open.
- [00:01:14.484]So if you want the students
- [00:01:15.703]to have something that they look at over the weekend
- [00:01:17.567]you can set the poll to last over the weekend.
- [00:01:21.103]And again, you can send it out and they can respond.
- [00:01:24.834]This is a really good way to do check-ins,
- [00:01:26.843]it's a way to not have to do something like clicker.
- [00:01:29.900]I remember in college as an undergrad
- [00:01:32.108]we would have clicker questions at the beginning of class,
- [00:01:35.029]and this serves a similar function.
- [00:01:37.558]As a teacher,
- [00:01:38.881]one of the nice things you can do about this
- [00:01:40.515]is really develop that professional development network.
- [00:01:43.187]You can follow other groups that do relevant things,
- [00:01:46.685]you can connect with other teachers,
- [00:01:48.125]and you can keep track of what's going on
- [00:01:50.513]in your local learning community.
- [00:01:52.935]I keep track of things like digital technologies,
- [00:01:56.410]I keep track of what's going on at the university,
- [00:01:59.255]I follow other educators who teach similar courses,
- [00:02:02.635]who are investigating similar things,
- [00:02:05.102]and I'm able to gather that information
- [00:02:08.529]kind of like a news feed.
- [00:02:10.642]And then I can find resources to send out to my students.
- [00:02:15.378]It's also a way that I build my network
- [00:02:18.703]when I go to conferences.
- [00:02:20.132]I tweet out about what's going on,
- [00:02:21.911]I share things that I'm doing in research,
- [00:02:24.437]and it's a really good way
- [00:02:25.880]to sort of get your name and your research out there.
- [00:02:28.737]And for teachers in the classrooms,
- [00:02:30.440]that's a great way to show that
- [00:02:32.994]moment-to-moment research you're doing in your classrooms.
- [00:02:37.445]One of the other things you can do
- [00:02:39.667]is you can send messages to individual students.
- [00:02:43.107]You can do a direct message to students,
- [00:02:45.486]you can do direct messages
- [00:02:48.479]to several students
- [00:02:51.193]and they can respond.
- [00:02:52.495]So it's a closed sort of chat thing.
- [00:02:54.735]It doesn't go out to everyone.
- [00:02:56.967]Again, with the hash tags
- [00:02:58.741]you can even have your students do a Twitter search,
- [00:03:01.572]so you can have them search for something like
- [00:03:04.542]educational technology.
- [00:03:09.224]And then it'll give them
- [00:03:11.245]a whole slew of information about educational technology.
- [00:03:15.264]And some of these things
- [00:03:16.250]are gonna be more relevant than others,
- [00:03:17.720]but that can help open up a conversation
- [00:03:20.069]about how do you filter through information
- [00:03:22.726]that you're given on the internet,
- [00:03:24.391]even with something that's already pre-filtering
- [00:03:26.565]like a hash tag.
- [00:03:27.908]You can do stuff based on Top,
- [00:03:29.753]so things that more people are viewing,
- [00:03:31.669]people that people are following.
- [00:03:33.947]You can do it live, for people that are on now.
- [00:03:38.915]And then you can look more specifically
- [00:03:40.784]if you want them to find photos
- [00:03:43.304]related to technology.
- [00:03:45.251]Tech Tip Tuesday.

- [00:03:51.091]That would be my father.
- [00:03:54.059]You can find all sorts of different types of information
- [00:03:56.944]through Twitter for your students.
- [00:03:58.707]For those of you that have done webquests,
- [00:04:00.432]you can do a similar thing, but through Twitter.
- [00:04:03.638]One of the other features
- [00:04:05.115]for especially younger students is,
- [00:04:08.158]and even sometimes older students,
- [00:04:09.408]is they're limited in the number of characters
- [00:04:11.368]that they have to respond.
- [00:04:13.181]So you can really have them pay attention to word choice.
- [00:04:16.930]You can use this in English language arts,
- [00:04:19.662]and have them focus on being concise in their responses,
- [00:04:22.914]and really being aware of the words that they use.
- [00:04:26.590]Do they need more words to say what they need to say?
- [00:04:29.895]And if they do, how can they condense that down
- [00:04:32.438]into a snippet of information?
- [00:04:35.834]Those are some of the features
- [00:04:37.291]that I really like about Twitter.
- [00:04:39.383]And I've heard stories about other teachers
- [00:04:41.528]using it in their classroom
- [00:04:43.197]through Twitter Polls,
- [00:04:44.625]through sending out tweets about homework updates,
- [00:04:47.524]classroom changes, etc.
- [00:04:49.895]And then, again, as a professional development tool
- [00:04:52.231]when you're at conferences
- [00:04:53.246]or when you're sharing things
- [00:04:54.107]that you're doing in your own classroom.
