- [00:00:03.585]Hello, and welcome.
- [00:00:05.373]It's such a pleasure to be back home at Nebraska.
- [00:00:08.473]I've really enjoyed catching up with old friends
- [00:00:10.830]and our devoted alumni.
- [00:00:12.989]I'm so grateful to all of you for the leadership
- [00:00:15.590]and the guidance you provide us in so many ways.
- [00:00:19.305]Our professional advisory committee
- [00:00:21.011]has been key in pushing the college forward.
- [00:00:23.415]And with the support of new Chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:00:25.446]we are really optimistic about each of the programs
- [00:00:28.012]within UNL's College of Architecture.
- [00:00:29.649]Look at the opportunity that you've got
- [00:00:32.795]to be able to step back now and say,
- [00:00:35.767]we're gonna define our future,
- [00:00:38.379]the University is going to back that future,
- [00:00:41.061]and they're gonna be serious about it,
- [00:00:43.058]and now you've got an open road to figure this out.
- [00:00:46.030]And there's a lot to be excited about,
- [00:00:48.306]particularly when I see the quality of our student work.
- [00:00:52.137]Our fourth year collaborative studio students
- [00:00:54.053]presented their data-driven elementary school
- [00:00:57.199]design concepts to the DLR Group,
- [00:00:59.718]and special guest Sharon Endorf
- [00:01:01.588]from the National Association of School Boards.
- [00:01:04.606]Thank you to all of our community partners.
- [00:01:06.766]You provide such valuable guidance for our students.
- [00:01:09.541](audience applause)
- [00:01:10.794]In our landscape architecture studio,
- [00:01:12.710]students are kicking off a project
- [00:01:14.916]to design ways to rehabilitate and redevelop sections
- [00:01:18.329]of Lincoln's Solid Waste Facility.
- [00:01:20.582]We're eventually gonna be looking at
- [00:01:22.564]how to design something for this space.
- [00:01:25.327]So, in you mind you also have to go through
- [00:01:27.254]kind of a really comprehensive checklist
- [00:01:28.752]of what you're looking at.
- [00:01:30.389]So, it's exciting, it's fun,
- [00:01:32.130]but it's also serious work that really matters
- [00:01:34.093]to your design process.
- [00:01:36.089]It will be fascinating to see what students come up with
- [00:01:38.818]as they address the complexities of the landfill site.
- [00:01:42.115]Like a little oasis.
- [00:01:43.903]You may have also seen in the news
- [00:01:45.168]some of the other environmental work
- [00:01:46.840]the College has been involved with.
- [00:01:49.023]CRP's Doctor Zhen Hontang
- [00:01:51.229]has secured yet another EPA grant
- [00:01:54.004]and will be working with drones
- [00:01:55.803]to assess and analyze Nebraska wetland conditions,
- [00:01:59.507]important and exciting work for sure.
- [00:02:02.642]And in what's become an annual tradition,
- [00:02:04.685]our students are turning heads on P Street.
- [00:02:07.738](upbeat music)
- [00:02:12.057]Today is Parking Day.
- [00:02:13.079]It's an annual global event in which activists,
- [00:02:15.610]designers, and community members
- [00:02:17.398]design installations for parking stalls around the world.
- [00:02:20.480]And what you're seeing here
- [00:02:21.313]is College of Architecture students
- [00:02:22.999]who have created nine stalls,
- [00:02:24.799]in which they are to create a public amenity
- [00:02:28.293]for the city for a day.
- [00:02:30.337]What we've made
- [00:02:31.509]is an area where people can gather together and sit
- [00:02:34.214]in a former parking stall turned public space for the day.
- [00:02:38.243](laughing)
- [00:02:39.799]So the structure itself is made of recycled pallets,
- [00:02:43.050]wooden pallets, that we've deconstructed and reconstructed
- [00:02:45.581]to make the structure.
- [00:02:46.846]And then we've got rigid installation foam on top.
- [00:02:49.807]And then it's all covered in this spandex knit fabric.
- [00:02:53.313]Well the hope of it is that students
- [00:02:54.613]are able to see a project through from design and ideation
- [00:02:58.770]through prototyping and into construction.
- [00:03:01.324]We're hoping that it gets picked
- [00:03:02.636]by one of the architecture firms to be displayed for awhile.
- [00:03:05.561]If not, one of our team members
- [00:03:07.558]really is keen on taking it back to his house.
- [00:03:11.355]I can't wait to see what they come up with next year.
- [00:03:14.652]We're always on the lookout
- [00:03:15.674]for the next generation of students.
- [00:03:17.996]Our open house gave high school students
- [00:03:20.271]a taste of the College.
- [00:03:21.990]We're really excited to go through this activity
- [00:03:24.555]with you this afternoon and talk a little bit about
- [00:03:26.680]what a design studio is.
- [00:03:29.652]We're building a object that will change the way
- [00:03:33.936]that people look at things.
- [00:03:35.805]We are thinking about space, experience, body.
- [00:03:39.788]I've always been able to draw and like build stuff,
- [00:03:43.944]so I thought this would be a good one
- [00:03:46.916]to go and see what they have for architecture.
- [00:03:51.069]It's seniors and juniors that came
- [00:03:53.055]from all throughout our state.
- [00:03:55.133]We're learning about architecture, interior design,
- [00:03:57.908]and landscape design.
- [00:03:59.580]Designing cool different things
- [00:04:01.820]is just something I've always wanted to do
- [00:04:04.224]and the University of Nebraska's program
- [00:04:06.627]is one of the best ones that I could possibly get.
- [00:04:09.820]If you know future college students
- [00:04:11.201]with an interest in architecture, design, or planning,
- [00:04:14.742]be sure to send them our way.
- [00:04:16.820]Let's keep in touch,
- [00:04:18.295]and thank you for all you do
- [00:04:20.582]for the College of Architecture.
