- [00:00:00.000]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:03.173]Pinterest.
- [00:00:04.256](exciting techno music)
- [00:00:17.467]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:19.340]And I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:20.723]And this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:22.803]from Tech Edge, and today we're talking about Pinterest,
- [00:00:24.939]a subject I know very little about.
- [00:00:27.260]So Pinterest is something that I talk to my students
- [00:00:31.471]about because I have a colleague who uses it a lot
- [00:00:34.188]in her classes, and I thought it was a really intriguing
- [00:00:36.948]idea because I never would of thought,
- [00:00:39.299]hey, let's use Pinterest in schools.
- [00:00:41.442]Mostly I think because of how I've used in the past,
- [00:00:43.913]and how I know a lot of my friends use it.
- [00:00:45.963]So I had her come in, and she does this every semester now,
- [00:00:49.031]and she talks about all of the resources
- [00:00:51.464]that are all ready out there for using Pinterest,
- [00:00:54.165]and she uses the infographics to kind of get
- [00:00:57.082]the kids in the right mindset,
- [00:00:59.600]and then shows them her Pinterest boards.
- [00:01:02.518]And what's really nice about it is you can collaborate,
- [00:01:05.429]which is, I think, the strongest feature for me
- [00:01:07.831]in the classroom, so you can set up a class board
- [00:01:09.945]and you can use it to have the students show their work.
- [00:01:14.770]So if you're doing small little in class projects,
- [00:01:17.538]instead of uploading it in one of the more, I guess,
- [00:01:20.924]in-depth ways, you can just have the students take a picture
- [00:01:23.687]of it and then upload it to Pinterest and it's there.
- [00:01:27.264]And then they can invite their parents,
- [00:01:29.684]so parents can become part of
- [00:01:31.583]and see it through the pin board.
- [00:01:34.598]You can also do things like little web quests,
- [00:01:38.524]but just through Pinterest, so they go to Pinterest
- [00:01:41.334]and they search for animals, and if it's something
- [00:01:46.513]more specific, animals with tails,
- [00:01:49.350]and they can go through and then they can find pictures,
- [00:01:53.466]usually there's some pretty informative sort of links.
- [00:01:57.466]So there are gonna be cute fun pictures,
- [00:02:00.224]but sometimes it'll be a do you know,
- [00:02:02.626]sometimes it'll have a link to an external resource
- [00:02:05.515]that they can look at, and Pinterest is one of the things
- [00:02:08.191]that usually you can get access to in schools.
- [00:02:11.403]Oh, all right.
- [00:02:12.755]Which is important.
- [00:02:14.665]It is important to know whether you have access in schools
- [00:02:17.400]and then have a serious conversation with an administrator
- [00:02:20.237]and with your fellow teachers to make sure that you're
- [00:02:22.566]on safe ground and you're not breaking any rules.
- [00:02:25.050]Exactly, one of the other things,
- [00:02:26.772]especially with lower grades, is you can set up a board
- [00:02:29.497]in advance and they can just search the board you have set.
- [00:02:33.394]So it's a more closed environment,
- [00:02:35.356]so you could preset a board that had a bunch
- [00:02:37.204]of different animals in it, and then they had to search
- [00:02:39.428]within your board to identify the ones with tails.
- [00:02:42.015]All right.
- [00:02:42.943]So that's a nice way to get your younger learners
- [00:02:45.454]interacting with multimedia and with web spaces,
- [00:02:49.525]but in a much more controlled sort of space.
- [00:02:53.237]Outside of within the classroom as a teacher resource,
- [00:02:57.306]it can be really a great way to go and search out ideas
- [00:03:00.849]and see what other people are doing.
- [00:03:02.932]So I have a board for ed tech,
- [00:03:05.430]and I just went through and pinned a lot of stuff
- [00:03:08.080]that kind of looked like it might be interesting.
- [00:03:10.826]So there's one that's 10 free Google Chrome extensinos,
- [00:03:14.915]teach kids to code, and,
- [00:03:18.270]So when you click on it,
- [00:03:20.029]what happens on the teacher and students?
- [00:03:22.214]So it brings up the visit,
- [00:03:24.404]so you can go and visit the website that it came from.
- [00:03:28.606]And this is one of the things as a teacher to be aware of,
- [00:03:32.470]when it does send you outside, there's not the guarantee.
- [00:03:39.992]So again, knowing your audience,
- [00:03:42.435]knowing your school's policies, all of that comes in.
- [00:03:44.818]But this is also a great way to start talking about
- [00:03:47.439]digital literacy and web responsibility with your students.
- [00:03:51.347]So what would be your top three kind of things
- [00:03:55.622]you want to think about as you're, for example,
- [00:03:59.522]if you're a teacher and you're looking for resources,
- [00:04:01.861]what are your top three pieces of advice?
- [00:04:04.898]I would definitely suggest collaborative boards.
- [00:04:07.577]So if you're looking to generate information,
- [00:04:10.651]have a board that other people can contribute to.
- [00:04:14.443]I also highly highly encourage professional boards
- [00:04:19.027]and personal boards, and keeping them separate.
- [00:04:22.438]Not necessarily because having recipes is a bad thing,
- [00:04:25.702]but just so that you have a professional presence and
- [00:04:28.322]a personal presence if you're gonna use the same platform.
- [00:04:31.451]And then also just encourage your students to have
- [00:04:35.324]a dialogue about digital media, about the types of things
- [00:04:39.527]and types of resources that should be shared,
- [00:04:43.066]the types of sources that should not be,
- [00:04:46.322]and really have this be a space
- [00:04:48.835]for that sort of a discussion to happen.
- [00:04:51.014]And I think that, I always go back to the same things,
- [00:04:54.553]and whatever choices kids are making or adults are making,
- [00:04:58.256]one of the most important things we can have
- [00:05:00.783]is that discussion that says, why am I doing this,
- [00:05:04.929]what am I doing, how is this helping or hindering?
- [00:05:08.686]What other choices could I be making?
- [00:05:11.023]So that discussion about what are we actually doing
- [00:05:14.273]is a crucial aspect of all of these moments
- [00:05:18.104]thinking about the content and what's worthwhile
- [00:05:22.086]in content, but also thinking about
- [00:05:24.919]the digital citizenship piece of this as well.
- [00:05:27.926]I also encourage, think about the purpose,
- [00:05:29.975]why are you going to use Pinterest?
- [00:05:31.811]And really be able to identify and articulate
- [00:05:34.460]maybe one or two ways or places where you're using it
- [00:05:38.119]instead of sort of an overall,
- [00:05:40.580]I'm just going to use Pinterest,
- [00:05:43.266]'cause I think that sometimes gets muddy
- [00:05:46.369]and then the use and the really strong features of it
- [00:05:50.322]get lost in that broad generalized,
- [00:05:53.563]I'm going to use Pinterest.
- [00:05:55.729]Yeah, and I want to play with that idea a little bit
- [00:05:59.229]and the way I think about it is we really need to start
- [00:06:03.096]with a purpose, but sometimes just saying,
- [00:06:06.051]I want to play around with Pinterest a little bit
- [00:06:07.962]in my classroom without being sure,
- [00:06:10.850]at least for a short while there's strength to that
- [00:06:13.831]because you're finding the affordances,
- [00:06:15.872]you're finding the ideas.
- [00:06:17.347]I mean, you can find them on Pinterest,
- [00:06:19.622]but you're finding what you can do,
- [00:06:22.007]and sometimes you need to be more playful and say,
- [00:06:24.171]you know what, I'm taking a short amount of time
- [00:06:26.135]and I'm going to spend some time with my students on this
- [00:06:28.472]because I think there might be some things,
- [00:06:30.511]not sure how they're going to play out,
- [00:06:32.551]but are gonna open up opportunities.
- [00:06:34.661]Because otherwise we kind of close ourselves and say,
- [00:06:37.607]okay, if I can't figure out a priori everything
- [00:06:40.475]that I need to figure out, I'm not gonna try this.
- [00:06:42.964]And so I want people to play, but on the other hand,
- [00:06:46.583]I don't want people to just play,
- [00:06:49.060]so whenever anybody is walking into the classroom
- [00:06:51.078]they're just trying this new thing.
- [00:06:53.441]So there is a balance of things,
- [00:06:55.039]but there's got to be a play period.
- [00:06:57.559]I think the play thing is good too,
- [00:07:00.061]but with a time constraint, maybe.
- [00:07:02.810]If it's not going to be purpose on the front end,
- [00:07:05.282]which sometimes there's no way to know that,
- [00:07:07.304]but limit it to a reasonable period of time for that.
- [00:07:10.922]And that's the way to balance it, I would argue.
- [00:07:13.723]Okay, so today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:07:16.206]we talked about Pinterest and I got much smarter
- [00:07:18.197]about that topic, and we'll see you
- [00:07:20.398]next time on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:07:22.524](upbeat techno music)
