- [00:00:01.749]So, now we're gonna do the activity
- [00:00:02.978]that I've been talking about which'll convey communications.
- [00:00:05.735]It's in your workbook, the Drawing Bugs Activity,
- [00:00:08.432]and the instructions are also in your workbook,
- [00:00:10.592]but I'll have them up on the slides here.
- [00:00:13.385]The rules are no questions, no talking, no sharing.
- [00:00:15.826]This is like an exam.
- [00:00:17.524]Do not look at other people's papers,
- [00:00:19.659]do not share information.
- [00:00:21.903]All right, I'm gonna read the instructions,
- [00:00:23.359]again you can follow along in the workbooks,
- [00:00:25.255]they're in there,
- [00:00:26.646]and draw as
- [00:00:29.700]we go through the steps.
- [00:00:32.280]The first step, the bug is round.
- [00:00:38.228]The second step, the bug has eight legs grouped in pairs.
- [00:00:42.447]Four legs are on the left, four legs are on the right.
- [00:00:47.340]And in the pairs, one leg is longer than the other.
- [00:01:00.729]The bug has two eyes on top of the body.
- [00:01:07.014]The bug also has two squiggly antenna.
- [00:01:19.289]The bug has two pea-pod shaped wings.
- [00:01:29.327]The bug has a spot next to each of those wings.
- [00:01:39.688]The bug has a triangular stinger on the bottom of the body.
- [00:01:50.413]The bug has two feelers on each foot,
- [00:01:52.856]one is longer than the other
- [00:01:55.062]and both are coming from the same side of the leg.
- [00:02:07.412]The bug has a round mouth placed between the two eyes.
- [00:02:17.306]The bug has laid five square eggs
- [00:02:19.804]to the left of the stinger.
- [00:02:29.095]Does anyone have Bingo?
- [00:02:32.911]All right, now I'd like you
- [00:02:34.059]to hold up your pieces of paper.
- [00:02:35.903]What bugs did you draw,
- [00:02:37.597]and look at each other's to see if they're alike.
- [00:02:42.164]And I understand that in some context
- [00:02:44.279]the instructions were a little vague,
- [00:02:47.282]but they were the same.
- [00:02:53.432]All right, we have some differences, different bugs.
- [00:02:58.112]Different bugs.
- [00:03:01.894]Very good, all right.
- [00:03:03.381]I see, actually, a little more similarities here,
- [00:03:07.494]but there are differences.
- [00:03:10.655]So, if you were to follow the instructions
- [00:03:14.289]your bug would probably look something like this.
- [00:03:18.475]This is a great example of communications,
- [00:03:21.590]and when I was talking earlier about
- [00:03:24.597]being understood, what's conveyed,
- [00:03:27.728]how you interpret it.
- [00:03:29.630]It was the same instructions that I read to all of you.
- [00:03:33.648]Your interpretation of those instructions varied.
- [00:03:38.845]And, in fact, the eggs on this one are on the wrong side,
- [00:03:42.667]so for those of you who are
- [00:03:44.396]directionally challenged like myself,
- [00:03:47.047]or when you say right-right and left-left
- [00:03:49.533]and you actually have to point,
- [00:03:52.278]that could have been a factor
- [00:03:54.169]if you found your eggs on the wrong side.
- [00:03:57.744]Again, this helps to underscore the difference between
- [00:04:02.555]communications in terms of
- [00:04:05.454]how you interpret what's being said,
- [00:04:08.398]and the context that you're putting it in.
