- [00:00:00.212]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.331]Google Classrooms.
- [00:00:04.856](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.371]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls, and today on
- [00:00:18.945]Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:20.216]we're gonna look at Google Classrooms.
- [00:00:22.305]A couple weeks ago, we talked about class craft,
- [00:00:24.651]and how you could gamify your
- [00:00:26.172]learning management system,
- [00:00:27.716]and that it was compatible with Google Classrooms.
- [00:00:30.141]So that got me thinking,
- [00:00:31.455]what can you do in Google Classrooms?
- [00:00:33.701]So I've also recently used Canvas instead of Blackboard,
- [00:00:37.326]and so I've kind of had this personal idea of
- [00:00:39.640]how many LMS's can I look at,
- [00:00:41.532]and figure out which ones do what.
- [00:00:44.433]And so today, I'm gonna show you what I've learned so far
- [00:00:47.581]about Google Classroom.
- [00:00:49.084]It looks very similar to Google Plus,
- [00:00:51.701]so if you use Google Plus,
- [00:00:52.829]which I have some colleagues that do,
- [00:00:54.765]and they use it in lieu of a blog.
- [00:00:56.660]They do it where their students can go in
- [00:00:59.243]and just show quick snippets of what they're learning
- [00:01:01.029]that's relevant to the course content.
- [00:01:04.021]They can take pictures of in-class projects that they do
- [00:01:06.621]and share it up there.
- [00:01:08.245]Links to Pinterest boards,
- [00:01:10.295]just some really interesting stuff going in.
- [00:01:12.373]And it ends up looking like a blog.
- [00:01:14.301]So you have this running stream of information.
- [00:01:17.331]And that's what Google Classroom looks like.
- [00:01:19.532]So when you go to Google Classroom,
- [00:01:21.958]to me, it just reminds me of a blog.
- [00:01:24.581]And you have a large banner picture,
- [00:01:26.387]which you can customize.
- [00:01:27.622]You can pick something that's your content.
- [00:01:29.893]You can take a picture of your classroom.
- [00:01:32.645]And you can change it throughout the semester.
- [00:01:34.141]If you wanted to do something seasonal.
- [00:01:37.045]Especially if you're working with younger kids,
- [00:01:38.630]sometimes changing that up a little bit
- [00:01:40.028]can be kinda fun.
- [00:01:42.066]Or set up a poll where the students
- [00:01:43.284]get to pick their background.
- [00:01:45.915]So as you go through, there are three main sections
- [00:01:48.606]of Google Classrooms.
- [00:01:49.700]There's the stream, there's the student portal,
- [00:01:52.492]and then there's about.
- [00:01:54.147]So we're gonna go ahead and start at about.
- [00:01:55.684]This is where you set up the information
- [00:01:57.171]about your classroom.
- [00:01:58.454]You can give it the name of the topic.
- [00:02:01.159]You can put algebra third period,
- [00:02:03.719]or, for me, I would put TI259, cause that's
- [00:02:07.190]the course I teach most often.
- [00:02:09.373]And you can tell students where the classroom is located.
- [00:02:13.127]And because it's Google, you get a Google Drive folder
- [00:02:15.879]where you can put all your different content.
- [00:02:18.510]And then also Google Calendars.
- [00:02:20.101]It's fully integrated with the Google products
- [00:02:22.609]most people are at least vaguely familiar with,
- [00:02:25.788]and you can then add class material.
- [00:02:29.282]If you wanted to upload your syllabus,
- [00:02:30.625]if you had readings,
- [00:02:31.988]if you had assignment sheets that you wanted to
- [00:02:34.811]sort of preload in there,
- [00:02:36.570]this would be where you could put it.
- [00:02:38.590]And you can invite multiple teachers.
- [00:02:40.023]So if you co-teach, if you have a student teacher
- [00:02:42.729]that you want to have be part
- [00:02:45.016]of this collaboration with you,
- [00:02:46.490]you can do that in this section.
- [00:02:48.915]Under the student portal, this is where
- [00:02:50.577]you invite students to your course.
- [00:02:52.585]So there are a couple different ways you can invite them,
- [00:02:55.074]by email from your contacts,
- [00:02:58.012]or you can send them this code.
- [00:03:00.329]And for those of you that have used apps before,
- [00:03:02.825]things like Kahoot, or Soccertiv,
- [00:03:05.786]where there's a code, class code,
- [00:03:07.363]a lot of students are gonna be familiar with a class code.
- [00:03:09.986]So you can tell them, hey, you're gonna get
- [00:03:11.754]an email from me that's got a class code,
- [00:03:14.138]go ahead and do that, and they can join in.
- [00:03:16.786]And you can modify how your students interact.
- [00:03:19.930]So if you have older students,
- [00:03:21.576]or even younger students, and you want them
- [00:03:23.178]to have some versatility in the classroom,
- [00:03:25.738]you can say that students can post and comment,
- [00:03:28.495]so you're getting that dialogue going on.
- [00:03:31.131]You can have it so that students can only comment,
- [00:03:34.131]or you can maintain that control and say,
- [00:03:36.139]only me as the teacher,
- [00:03:38.082]only I wanna be able to post and comment.
- [00:03:39.786]And you can modify this for each class.
- [00:03:42.311]So if you have one class where you want them
- [00:03:44.041]to be able to post and comment,
- [00:03:46.203]and one class where you don't,
- [00:03:48.194]each class can be different.
- [00:03:49.770]So you can really modify it
- [00:03:50.844]for your specific learners.
- [00:03:53.265]So, stream.
- [00:03:55.075]Stream is where you're going to have most of your content
- [00:03:57.692]and most of your interaction.
- [00:03:59.386]So again, if you've worked with Google products before,
- [00:04:02.361]there's this handy-dandy little plus symbol.
- [00:04:05.072]And if you go down to your plus symbol.
- [00:04:09.374]Oops.
- [00:04:14.486]You can add content to your course.
- [00:04:18.661]So if you just hover over it,
- [00:04:20.014]it'll say you can reuse a post,
- [00:04:23.229]you can create a question,
- [00:04:25.631]you can create an assignment,
- [00:04:27.142]or you can create an announcement.
- [00:04:29.030]So let's say you have a student,
- [00:04:30.092]if you have the option where your students can post things,
- [00:04:32.574]you can sort of reblog, you can repost.
- [00:04:36.307]Doing a question, I did a sample question up here.
- [00:04:39.391]And it's based on a reading, so I can attach the reading,
- [00:04:42.921]and I modified a quote from the reading,
- [00:04:46.764]and then I had their question be respond to the above.
- [00:04:49.666]So this kind of simulates a discussion board post,
- [00:04:53.556]and they add their comments in there.
- [00:04:57.155]And then there's also a video discussion.
- [00:04:58.931]So this video discussion, I added a link
- [00:05:02.397]to an external source.
- [00:05:04.461]So I'll go ahead and I'll do one real quick.
- [00:05:07.278]So create an assignment.
- [00:05:08.974]And again, most of this looks fairly familiar,
- [00:05:11.358]and Google recently added this topic,
- [00:05:14.366]because sometimes the stream can get really cumbersome,
- [00:05:17.204]cause it just runs the whole semesters.
- [00:05:19.212]So you can add topics that I like to think
- [00:05:21.634]function as hashtags,
- [00:05:23.228]and your students are probably gonna be
- [00:05:24.339]familiar with that term,
- [00:05:25.724]so they can go and search through
- [00:05:27.605]by the hashtag for topics.
- [00:05:29.813]So if you had something that was readings,
- [00:05:32.037]or if you had something that was multiplication,
- [00:05:35.590]or US history pre-Abraham Lincoln.
- [00:05:40.559]You can have whatever sort of topic you want.
- [00:05:43.188]You can assign a due date,
- [00:05:45.039]and then you can attach a file.
- [00:05:47.083]Go direct from Google Drive, YouTube,
- [00:05:50.212]or you can insert a link.
- [00:05:51.855]So if you have outside sources
- [00:05:53.446]that aren't necessarily Google,
- [00:05:55.222]you can still link it to them.
- [00:05:57.196]You can give it a title,
- [00:05:58.630]and then you can give it instructions,
- [00:06:00.574]a due date, and a due time.
- [00:06:02.919]So if this is something that you want them
- [00:06:04.567]to do at home, they can do it there.
- [00:06:06.728]And then you can also,
- [00:06:09.920]so if we put this as test assignment.
- [00:06:13.983]So if you really wanna get ahead of things,
- [00:06:15.694]you can schedule it.
- [00:06:16.851]You can set up all of your assignments beforehand,
- [00:06:19.753]and say schedule, and they'll deploy
- [00:06:21.600]on that date.
- [00:06:23.072]If you don't preset a date,
- [00:06:25.970]it'll deploy automatically.
- [00:06:31.114]If we create a question.
- [00:06:33.213]So this, you can also set it up
- [00:06:35.251]so that students can reply to each other.
- [00:06:37.349]That's that discussion board feature.
- [00:06:39.059]Or you can turn that off,
- [00:06:40.691]and they don't get to respond to each other.
- [00:06:43.235]They just respond to you,
- [00:06:44.283]and you can set it so that students can edit
- [00:06:45.989]their answer or not,
- [00:06:48.131]and you can do short answer or multiple choice.
- [00:06:51.300]Again, you have some versatility with the types
- [00:06:53.274]of questions and responses you want from your students,
- [00:06:58.179]and then the last one is create an announcement.
- [00:07:00.524]Again, this could be something like this week
- [00:07:02.380]I told my students, hey we're meeting in a different room.
- [00:07:05.068]I sent out an announcement that way,
- [00:07:07.131]or something like, hey, remember parent teacher conferences
- [00:07:10.229]are coming up, or
- [00:07:13.284]remember tomorrow everyone is going to wear blue.
- [00:07:16.068]Whatever your announcement might be.
- [00:07:18.851]One of the other things that you can do
- [00:07:20.540]that's really nice for a lot of teachers is you
- [00:07:22.780]can invite parents to your classroom.
- [00:07:24.940]You do that in the student section,
- [00:07:28.985]there's an option where it says add guardian,
- [00:07:31.634]and that's where you can have parents be part of
- [00:07:33.497]your classroom as well, and they can be a part of
- [00:07:35.842]and know what's really going on,
- [00:07:37.628]access content, see the announcements,
- [00:07:39.882]so you don't have to worry about,
- [00:07:41.154]did the students go home and tell their parents
- [00:07:43.859]that really important thing I told them to tell?
- [00:07:45.896]Now your parents can just be in there
- [00:07:47.737]and see it for themselves.
- [00:07:50.120]If you run into issues as you're going through
- [00:07:51.684]Google Classroom and I've used this button
- [00:07:54.494]a lot in the last couple of days as I've started
- [00:07:56.734]to get myself familiar with Google Classroom,
- [00:07:59.701]there's this little help.
- [00:08:01.245]You can ask a question.
- [00:08:02.464]It'll show you what's new, and you can send feedback.
- [00:08:05.992]If there's a feature that you would like to see
- [00:08:08.266]that isn't in there, that's where I would
- [00:08:10.687]send the feedback, be like, I would like to see this,
- [00:08:13.295]and then the what's new is really nice,
- [00:08:15.949]because it shows you updates that they've made.
- [00:08:18.536]It shows that they are taking that feedback that
- [00:08:21.217]teachers give them and adding things in there,
- [00:08:23.911]like topics.
- [00:08:24.958]Topics got added because teachers were like,
- [00:08:26.833]okay, it's really hard to find stuff in the stream.
- [00:08:29.456]That's Google Classroom, and I'm really excited
- [00:08:33.039]to see how it works with my students and with
- [00:08:37.285]Classcraft.
- [00:08:38.708]I'm Zoe, and this has been Tech Edge, and thanks.
- [00:08:42.803](upbeat music)
