- [00:00:04.741]Hi, my name is Dr. Steve Morin.
- [00:00:07.327]I'm in the Department of Chemistry
- [00:00:09.383]here at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln
- [00:00:12.125]and I'm an affiliate of the
- [00:00:14.014]Nebraska Nanoscale Facility and the
- [00:00:16.176]Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience.
- [00:00:20.229]And so I've been asked the question
- [00:00:22.371]how nanotechnology has influenced my field
- [00:00:26.423]in the recent past,
- [00:00:29.095]and I think that one of the most powerful contributions
- [00:00:31.621]nanoscience has contributed to what we do,
- [00:00:34.493]which is to basically look at how we can
- [00:00:36.097]augment different polymeric structures
- [00:00:38.112]with different functionalities,
- [00:00:40.066]is nanotechnology has given us the power synthetically
- [00:00:43.725]to produce very tiny objects of specific sizes
- [00:00:48.353]and specific shapes,
- [00:00:51.224]where the shape and size influence their properties,
- [00:00:53.872]and then from this it's given us a whole range
- [00:00:56.589]of different functional materials
- [00:00:59.116]that we can then apply to the hybrid or
- [00:01:03.333]polymer-inorganic type structres
- [00:01:05.294]that we like to look at.
- [00:01:06.679]And so if I look at the field as a whole,
- [00:01:09.358]and I think about grand challenges
- [00:01:11.343]that we anticipate at least partially overcoming
- [00:01:14.267]in the next five years,
- [00:01:16.092]I think that now we have these
- [00:01:17.609]nanoscale building blocks
- [00:01:19.087]and the whole variety of them
- [00:01:20.393]that we can work from and build off of,
- [00:01:23.399]we are now really stressing
- [00:01:25.167]how we can start to put them together.
- [00:01:27.434]And so my hope is that
- [00:01:29.126]in the next five years
- [00:01:30.512]we'll see more examples
- [00:01:32.467]of really intricate architectures that are based upon
- [00:01:36.281]these nanoscale building blocks,
- [00:01:38.441]and from that we'll be able to achieve
- [00:01:40.767]ever-more diverse sets of materials
- [00:01:44.422]with more functions
- [00:01:45.791]that eventually will be working their way
- [00:01:48.622]into society and then to people's daily lives.
