- [00:00:04.926]My name is Shudipto Dishari.
- [00:00:06.668]I am an assistant professor in
- [00:00:07.995]Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
- [00:00:10.131]at University of Nebraska–Lincoln
- [00:00:12.286]and my research interest is
- [00:00:13.733]nanomaterials for energy and biological applications.
- [00:00:17.313]Materials behave very differently
- [00:00:19.457]at nanoscale as compared to bulk or microscale.
- [00:00:23.541]Water molecules, polymer chains, and biomolecules
- [00:00:26.855]experience severe confinement when they are
- [00:00:29.143]in nanoscale-thick films.
- [00:00:30.881]This, in addition to complex
- [00:00:32.686]multi-modal interfacial interaction
- [00:00:34.965]leads to unique optical, electronic, mechanical,
- [00:00:37.889]and transport properties.
- [00:00:40.397]There have been a lot of efforts
- [00:00:42.221]in developing nanomaterials with high strength,
- [00:00:44.758]nanocatalysts to improve fuel efficiency,
- [00:00:47.848]and nanoarchitectures to improve optoelectronic properties.
- [00:00:51.739]So the key to developing next-generation materials
- [00:00:54.514]is to know how the materials behave at nanoscale and
- [00:01:00.275]how we can tweak the nanoarchitecture
- [00:01:02.326]to yield efficient materials.
- [00:01:04.334]But the bulk-scale understanding is not good enough
- [00:01:07.556]to predict nanoscale properties
- [00:01:09.198]because they are so different.
- [00:01:11.131]And I believe that there will be a major thrust
- [00:01:14.538]in this research area in the next
- [00:01:16.178]couple of years.
- [00:01:17.820]So researchers will try to explore
- [00:01:19.399]nanoconfinement in a more systematic way
- [00:01:23.890]and develop more tools to understand
- [00:01:26.874]the nanoarchitecture in a much better way.
- [00:01:29.358]And through this effort we will be able to design
- [00:01:32.463]an area of next-generation functional materials
- [00:01:36.718]that will open up new avenues
- [00:01:39.387]towards combatting pollution, climate change,
- [00:01:42.305]we'll be able to design new medical diagnostics,
- [00:01:45.713]and that will improve the quality of life.
