- [00:00:00.153]Coming up on Mobile Learning In The Classroom,
- [00:00:02.176]Research and Citation Apps.
- [00:00:04.636](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.780]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:18.911]And I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:19.920]And this Mobile Learning In The Classroom
- [00:00:21.904]and today we're talking about Research and Citations
- [00:00:25.649]and this is an area where digital resources
- [00:00:29.131]can really help connect, collect
- [00:00:31.745]and really preserve everything that you read and use
- [00:00:37.348]while you're doing research.
- [00:00:38.650]I want to share two things that I find useful.
- [00:00:43.184]One is Citation Machine and Citation Machine
- [00:00:45.608]has adds so that's one thing if you're working especially
- [00:00:48.563]in a K12 environment,
- [00:00:49.995]know that there are ads in this.
- [00:00:51.566]You can pay and then get it for free,
- [00:00:53.405]so that's great and you may want to do that.
- [00:00:56.636]There is a school version that probably comes
- [00:00:59.588]with a license and then you don't see the ads,
- [00:01:04.105]but you just choose your style.
- [00:01:06.414]So let me just do this
- [00:01:08.313]a little bit bigger and I choose my style.
- [00:01:10.388]I usually write in APA, so I'll choose.
- [00:01:12.965]And now you can find a Book or a Magazine,
- [00:01:16.298]Newspaper, Website, Journal, Film even
- [00:01:18.973]or something else that you want to define
- [00:01:21.102]and then you can search it, which is fantastic.
- [00:01:23.522]So if we look for a book by title, for example,
- [00:01:27.258]the manufactured crisis.
- [00:01:32.145]One of my favorite books.
- [00:01:34.402]So you do a search and now it gives you the options.
- [00:01:37.880]Things that come up with that.
- [00:01:39.945]And now you can select the ones you meant.
- [00:01:42.875]In this case, this one and it gives you everything about it
- [00:01:47.779]and now you can create a citation.
- [00:01:50.243]So the easy thing is, if you don't want to make any changes,
- [00:01:52.743]if I don't want to select this specific chapter or page,
- [00:01:55.792]this is it, here it is.
- [00:01:57.425]I can copy and paste it.
- [00:01:59.967]So you click here, copy and paste
- [00:02:02.455]and put it inside your document.
- [00:02:04.266]It's that easy.
- [00:02:05.607]And what I love about it is,
- [00:02:07.350]and I think Zotero does the same thing to a degree,
- [00:02:09.788]and that is you can do a search inside that.
- [00:02:12.335]So you don't have to go somewhere else, do the search,
- [00:02:15.023]bring it in.
- [00:02:16.076]If you have a fraction of the name or the full name
- [00:02:18.892]or the author, you can bring it in, here it is
- [00:02:21.977]and it seems to work really, really fast.
- [00:02:24.749]Again, it sits in your browser,
- [00:02:26.743]which means any device can use it
- [00:02:30.944]and I've tried it on my iPad,
- [00:02:32.771]I've tried it on my computer, on Chromebook.
- [00:02:36.017]It works on all of them, so it's a fantastic thing.
- [00:02:38.186]The other thing that I like about it
- [00:02:40.557]is that this version, you don't need to have a log in.
- [00:02:44.072]So at least at K12 we worry about logging in
- [00:02:46.676]and having too many and remembering passwords and all that,
- [00:02:49.594]you don't need all that.
- [00:02:50.781]You can create one if you want to start saving them
- [00:02:53.518]and all that, but if you just want to do a search
- [00:02:55.537]and copy and paste, that's a simple and easy one.
- [00:02:59.297]The second one and I mention this mostly
- [00:03:01.376]because a lot of schools are using Chrome
- [00:03:04.270]and Google Drive and all that and that is
- [00:03:07.110]that you can actually bring the research
- [00:03:12.734]into your Google Doc just by going to Tools
- [00:03:16.664]and clicking on Research,
- [00:03:18.289]it turns that Research on
- [00:03:20.124]and then you can search for something like,
- [00:03:22.387]I don't know.
- [00:03:23.862]And it automatically tries to find words in your text
- [00:03:26.738]that you may be interested in
- [00:03:29.820]and now you can do a few things and one is
- [00:03:34.631]you can Insert Link and the other one is you can Cite,
- [00:03:37.509]so a citation would add it at the end
- [00:03:40.795]or at the bottom of a page and Inserting Link
- [00:03:43.242]would obviously happen inside the text.
- [00:03:45.180]So it's very quick and easy
- [00:03:46.482]and if you've got students already working in Google Drive,
- [00:03:49.463]already working in Docs,
- [00:03:50.907]this is really easy and the beauty of it again
- [00:03:53.932]is you don't need an extra log in,
- [00:03:55.961]it does get saved and you're working inside your documents,
- [00:03:59.770]so you're not running somewhere else,
- [00:04:01.055]searching, copying and pasting and all that.
- [00:04:03.255]So there's something very sleek
- [00:04:04.455]about having it integrated.
- [00:04:07.114]Obviously it's a Google search,
- [00:04:08.461]although you can do search of other things
- [00:04:10.263]including Google Scholar, which is really useful.
- [00:04:13.252]I love Google Scholar.
- [00:04:14.447]Yes and Images and other things.
- [00:04:17.410]So if you want to search other things you can do that
- [00:04:20.980]also under that Research tab.
- [00:04:22.863]So when it does personal results,
- [00:04:23.975]is it searching your Google Drive?
- [00:04:25.541]Your documents, yes.
- [00:04:26.933]Okay, so you can link to files
- [00:04:28.110]you've already created.
- [00:04:30.026]Yes, which is really interesting.
- [00:04:32.421]But it can also, you see their web results
- [00:04:34.586]that you can go to.
- [00:04:35.791]You can insert that and then cite those.
- [00:04:38.566]So you can cite things you already have
- [00:04:40.451]and cite things that are out there, for example.
- [00:04:44.281]You can see this one is a footnote
- [00:04:46.266]or you're inserting the actual citation.
- [00:04:48.776]So that's inside Google Drive
- [00:04:50.857]and that's really, really useful.
- [00:04:53.419]And you wanted to talk about two more.
- [00:04:56.784]Yeah, so Mendeley is another app
- [00:05:01.376]that's similar to Zotero.
- [00:05:06.047]And Mendeley does actually have a mobile app
- [00:05:08.293]that I like the best is it's PDF viewer
- [00:05:13.013]and the way that you can look at the PDFs that you've stored
- [00:05:15.807]in your citation and share those.
- [00:05:19.862]It doesn't have some of the same features as Zotero
- [00:05:22.379]such as the built in way to automatically save things
- [00:05:26.213]by just clicking a button.
- [00:05:28.322]So it's not gonna be quite as seamless
- [00:05:30.531]and it takes a little bit more time to use,
- [00:05:37.504]but again, it depends on what your focus
- [00:05:39.683]for using it is.
- [00:05:40.791]So if you really need something
- [00:05:41.882]where all of your sources are there
- [00:05:43.621]and you can edit the PDFs and highlight
- [00:05:46.022]and change notes and things like that,
- [00:05:48.089]Mendeley might be a better option
- [00:05:50.627]and their mobile version, the viewer for the PDF
- [00:05:53.951]is also really nice and very dynamic.
- [00:05:57.215]So my Library Mendeley is much shorter or much smaller
- [00:05:59.622]'cause I don't use it as much,
- [00:06:01.695]but you can do the same thing.
- [00:06:02.747]You can have a group.
- [00:06:03.834]You can share sources.
- [00:06:10.449]I have a friend that uses it
- [00:06:11.866]so this is how we share information
- [00:06:14.053]'cause she prefers Mendeley to Zotero
- [00:06:17.677]and so, again, the same thing,
- [00:06:21.351]you can share things with other people.
- [00:06:23.274]You can edit the PDFs.
- [00:06:24.660]It'll save it, so if you're trying to figure out
- [00:06:28.727]how to formulate something
- [00:06:30.245]and you wanna highlight a certain source,
- [00:06:32.561]a certain sentence in a source to a colleague,
- [00:06:35.077]Mendeley again might serve you a little better
- [00:06:37.174]than Zotero, but it does the same thing.
- [00:06:40.425]You can add a document, add a folder,
- [00:06:43.368]manual entry.
- [00:06:44.697]Okay, so similar,
- [00:06:46.262]not as seamless in that when you're working on your own
- [00:06:49.897]has the advantage of being able to cite specific sentences
- [00:06:53.470]and work with PDFs a little bit more agilely.
- [00:06:57.615]Exactly and I do know grad students that use both.
- [00:07:01.530]Oh wow.
- [00:07:03.390]And they will talk to each other.
- [00:07:06.370]It's not a full sync,
- [00:07:07.870]but Mendeley and Zotero will talk to each other.
- [00:07:12.500]It's getting a little bit complicated for me.
- [00:07:14.345]I really like one place where I go to
- [00:07:17.460]and everything's there and if it's more than that
- [00:07:19.510]it becomes, and I think for students
- [00:07:21.789]who are learning how to do this,
- [00:07:23.478]it'll be much more useful to have
- [00:07:25.739]one place where they go and they enter everything
- [00:07:28.116]and then if they have further needs,
- [00:07:30.211]maybe go to a second one that compliments it.
- [00:07:33.917]At the graduate student level,
- [00:07:35.305]obviously that would work,
- [00:07:37.242]but if you're in eleventh grade
- [00:07:39.740]and doing a social studies paper.
- [00:07:41.781]Right and I think Zotero is a much easier gateway
- [00:07:46.316]citation manager, especially to get those skills
- [00:07:48.212]while they are still in high school
- [00:07:49.519]to make it a little easier when they get to college,
- [00:07:52.946]play around with them, figure out which one they like.
- [00:07:57.105]All right.
- [00:07:58.622]And last.
- [00:08:03.134]We're looking at Cite This For me.
- [00:08:05.743]So Cite This For Me
- [00:08:07.547]is very similar to Citation Machine in that
- [00:08:11.755]you can type in something.
- [00:08:15.564]So if I'm looking for educational technology,
- [00:08:23.883]again, it'll pull up search results
- [00:08:25.627]of educational technology.
- [00:08:28.345]The app version, so if you have books,
- [00:08:30.843]you can scan the barcode and it'll populate
- [00:08:33.346]and that always makes me really happy
- [00:08:35.816]because it saves me so much time
- [00:08:37.930]of even having to remember what it is
- [00:08:40.810]or where I found it or what the name of it was.
- [00:08:44.166]I can just scan the book and have it in there
- [00:08:46.433]and be good to go.
- [00:08:49.210]Which is very elegant.
- [00:08:51.227]The mobile app, you can do the same thing.
- [00:08:52.839]So you can type in what you know of it
- [00:08:55.041]and do a search and same thing that we've seen
- [00:08:57.654]with all of the others.
- [00:08:58.670]You can copy the citation.
- [00:09:00.285]You can copy an in-text citation.
- [00:09:02.418]And I think what I like best about the copy, paste,
- [00:09:04.505]is you don't have to worry about if the plugin is working,
- [00:09:07.040]if it's broken, if you have the right version
- [00:09:09.818]of the right program, 'cause copy, paste
- [00:09:12.059]pretty much works everywhere.
- [00:09:13.948]So those are the features that I like about
- [00:09:17.290]Cite This For Me.
- [00:09:18.719]All right, so today we talked about
- [00:09:20.512]quite a few options to do research and citations
- [00:09:23.880]and we'll see you next time on
- [00:09:25.111]Mobile Learning In The Classroom.
- [00:09:27.662](upbeat music)
