- [00:00:14.986]Strategic Discussions for Nebraska
- [00:00:17.424]is a program from the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:19.909]Lincoln's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
- [00:00:24.474]Our mission is to train students on how to communicate
- [00:00:27.319]important research
- [00:00:28.932]so that it can be understood
- [00:00:30.476]and promoted in Nebraska,
- [00:00:32.371]our country,
- [00:00:33.304]and globally.
- [00:00:34.756]Beginning in 2008,
- [00:00:36.727]Strategic Discussions for Nebraska has focused on
- [00:00:39.043]global issues, such as immigration,
- [00:00:41.656]energy,
- [00:00:42.489]climate,
- [00:00:43.496]hunger,
- [00:00:44.370]technology,
- [00:00:45.760]health,
- [00:00:46.605]and what the University of Nebraska's doing to
- [00:00:48.685]meet these challenges.
- [00:00:50.941]For 2016,
- [00:00:52.932]our focus is on the partnerships between
- [00:00:55.533]the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:57.272]and private businesses that are vital to
- [00:00:59.303]safe food production,
- [00:01:01.080]public health,
- [00:01:02.095]and disease prevention.
- [00:01:04.220](upbeat music)
- [00:01:08.607]The University of Nebraska
- [00:01:10.254]has been a leader on things in many ways.
- [00:01:12.904]In developing these kinds of public and private partnerships
- [00:01:15.801]for the benefit of the public at large.
- [00:01:19.011]And we're very proud of that.
- [00:01:21.409]They're important because
- [00:01:23.277]we get to educate students in areas that we
- [00:01:25.748]don't have support for
- [00:01:27.861]in many ways.
- [00:01:29.536]They're important for the research work that they produce
- [00:01:32.258]for the greater good.
- [00:01:33.712]They're important for society as a whole.
- [00:01:35.907]So we're very proud to be a leader in this field.
- [00:01:38.507](upbeat music)
- [00:01:43.524]A lot of the research
- [00:01:45.557]that has being done is very complicated,
- [00:01:48.016]very expensive.
- [00:01:49.743]It's very risky.
- [00:01:51.510]And no one institution,
- [00:01:53.969]no one university,
- [00:01:56.008]no single business and a lot of these
- [00:01:58.337]grand challenges
- [00:01:59.768]can really afford, or take the risk
- [00:02:04.554]to move innovation forward.
- [00:02:07.419]A great example is
- [00:02:09.468]our alliance for Advanced Food Sanitation.
- [00:02:12.984]This is eight or nine of the largest food companies
- [00:02:15.363]in the world
- [00:02:16.481]as well as
- [00:02:18.289]some materials companies coming together
- [00:02:21.691]to try to improve food safety, food sanitation
- [00:02:25.305]of, for the
- [00:02:27.951]companies that help feed the world.
- [00:02:30.024](upbeat music)
- [00:02:34.900]This type of research partnership is probably one of
- [00:02:37.428]the best ones that I've seen at a university,
- [00:02:39.512]in this nation.
- [00:02:40.792]As well as in the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:42.885]So we're bringing in big companies
- [00:02:44.641]like Conagra,
- [00:02:45.819]and Kellogg,
- [00:02:47.009]and Cargill.
- [00:02:48.369]And partnering them with not only
- [00:02:51.223]the research of the university,
- [00:02:52.666]but also service providers, like Ecolab
- [00:02:55.116]and 3M are we're excited about
- [00:02:56.700]putting this research together.
- [00:02:58.459](piano music)
- [00:03:03.376]I think it's important for companies
- [00:03:05.245]like mine to develop partnerships with
- [00:03:07.501]the University of Nebraska because
- [00:03:09.736]especially when you're in the space of agriculture.
- [00:03:12.803]And we're an ag state and
- [00:03:14.937]we have a big ag presence at the university
- [00:03:17.668]and it makes sense that if you're developing
- [00:03:19.610]some kind of a solution for ag producers you can
- [00:03:23.369]vet it through the processes at the university
- [00:03:25.766]and have it peer reviewed, perhaps,
- [00:03:28.590]vested, that type of thing.
- [00:03:30.146](piano music)
- [00:03:34.677]The University of Nebraska is a public
- [00:03:36.973]university.
- [00:03:38.435]Over 150 years ago our land grant mission
- [00:03:42.128]was established to teach students.
- [00:03:44.711]Conduct research,
- [00:03:46.072]and be involved in extinction education programs.
- [00:03:50.612]We do focus on students,
- [00:03:53.122]but an important part of the university
- [00:03:55.409]is the reservoir of knowledge on cutting edge
- [00:03:58.059]science and technology
- [00:03:59.786]that the university has.
- [00:04:02.254]Being able to put that knowledge to work
- [00:04:04.744]in a business format
- [00:04:06.471]that creates jobs and returns tax dollars,
- [00:04:09.782]makes collaboration a win-win for everybody.
- [00:04:15.451]The research being done at the
- [00:04:16.954]University of Nebraska in these important areas
- [00:04:19.323]are helping us solve problems and create
- [00:04:21.497]a better quality of life.
- [00:04:23.711]We're looking at better ways to feed a hungry planet.
- [00:04:26.969]More efficiently producing safer food.
- [00:04:29.705]Using technology in innovative ways.
- [00:04:32.700]And studying insect and disease pests
- [00:04:35.461]in the hopes of making life better for everyone.
