- [00:00:00.298]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:03.117]Classcraft.
- [00:00:03.950](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.290]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls,
- [00:00:18.845]and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:20.761]we're gonna look at Classcraft.
- [00:00:22.701]So, gamification in classrooms is a big thing,
- [00:00:25.621]and has been for a number of years,
- [00:00:27.140]and teachers keep trying to find new ways
- [00:00:29.183]to bring games and fun into their classroom
- [00:00:32.373]while still making it teachable.
- [00:00:34.485]Classcraft is a free website and app
- [00:00:39.123]that your students can access,
- [00:00:40.654]and it's fully compatible with Google Classroom.
- [00:00:42.935]Which is really cool,
- [00:00:44.508]because one of the features is you can insert
- [00:00:47.047]assignments and your roster and other things
- [00:00:50.458]into the gamespace,
- [00:00:52.864]so that the game is tied to
- [00:00:54.197]the actual content of your course.
- [00:00:56.403]So, I'm just gonna go through the tutorial really quickly
- [00:00:59.174]and give you an overview of what it does.
- [00:01:01.380]But it's a very robust program,
- [00:01:03.823]so it's definitely one of those
- [00:01:05.048]that we won't be able to cover all of the features
- [00:01:07.281]in this video,
- [00:01:08.706]but hopefully give you enough of an overview
- [00:01:11.238]that you'll be interested to go and look at it on your own.
- [00:01:15.282]So, it's still loading.
- [00:01:16.894]But it takes you through a virtual
- [00:01:20.165]gamespace that your students can be put into teams,
- [00:01:23.737]and as the teacher you get to assign those teams.
- [00:01:27.980]What that does is it fosters an environment
- [00:01:30.457]where the students are self-accountable
- [00:01:32.486]because they want their team to do well.
- [00:01:34.228]So, they'll encourage the members of their team
- [00:01:36.578]to do what they need to do
- [00:01:38.292]in order to be successful within the game
- [00:01:40.747]and successful within the classroom.
- [00:01:44.055]And again, it'll span the length of your
- [00:01:47.448]school year, or if you want to start it at the semester,
- [00:01:49.860]or do it for just a quarter,
- [00:01:51.519]within the game you can designate the dates
- [00:01:54.122]of when the game will be operational,
- [00:01:56.182]and the game will optimize for that time
- [00:01:58.341]so that your students are experiencing
- [00:02:00.421]the game in its fullest.
- [00:02:03.762]So, students get to choose if they're going to be
- [00:02:05.573]a warrior, a mage, or a healer.
- [00:02:08.722]And again, class becomes fun.
- [00:02:12.206]And you can customize these,
- [00:02:14.309]so if your school has a policy where you can't eat,
- [00:02:16.786]obviously you can change it to something else.
- [00:02:19.673]But as they progress through the game
- [00:02:21.482]they get to earn different privileges,
- [00:02:24.263]and as we'll see,
- [00:02:30.604]when they don't do what they're supposed to do,
- [00:02:33.335]there are consequences that the game automates for you.
- [00:02:38.455]So, in order to get the experience points
- [00:02:40.641]they need to go through the game,
- [00:02:43.312]they need to complete assignments.
- [00:02:46.702]And then you get to decide what those are.
- [00:02:49.006]So, are there certain goals you have for your class?
- [00:02:52.366]You can make these for grade level competencies,
- [00:02:55.403]you can make these for content
- [00:02:57.296]that you're looking for specifically.
- [00:03:00.848]And then, again, they can lose health points.
- [00:03:03.605]And then some of the consequences,
- [00:03:06.045]turn your assignment in a day early.
- [00:03:08.451]There are classes for me
- [00:03:10.318]where that would have been a very, very large motivator
- [00:03:12.774]to not mess up in class.
- [00:03:14.844]Because sometimes you just need that extra day,
- [00:03:17.763]and even if you don't need that extra day,
- [00:03:19.293]knowing that you have to turn it in early
- [00:03:21.746]really messes things up for students.
- [00:03:23.790]So, the consequences are real,
- [00:03:25.788]and I think what I like about this
- [00:03:26.910]as far as classroom management is
- [00:03:30.204]it's not a personal thing.
- [00:03:32.106]As the teacher, you don't have to feel
- [00:03:35.628]that same level of, now I have to discipline them.
- [00:03:40.186]It's built in,
- [00:03:41.019]and the class already knows the expectations going in.
- [00:03:44.579]So it's more cause and effect way of doing it
- [00:03:49.086]rather than singling people out.
- [00:03:52.979]So, again, students play in teams as I mentioned earlier.
- [00:03:55.527]So, if one student on the team loses all their points,
- [00:03:59.284]it penalizes the entire team.
- [00:04:01.742]So again, that fosters
- [00:04:04.575]an environment where the students want to
- [00:04:07.123]do well for their team.
- [00:04:10.215]So, accountability, self-autonomy.
- [00:04:13.572]And then, so fundamentals of how it works,
- [00:04:17.273]they get to make their own avatar.
- [00:04:19.133]Students really like it when they get to be autonomous,
- [00:04:21.072]they get to be creative.
- [00:04:22.484]And as they progress through the game,
- [00:04:23.665]they get more options of things to add.
- [00:04:26.386]There's a version of this where they can have pets,
- [00:04:29.049]they can have little virtual pets
- [00:04:30.007]for their little virtual avatar.
- [00:04:33.323]And, so you can start class with a random event
- [00:04:36.119]that's within the game,
- [00:04:37.194]and this is where they earn points.
- [00:04:40.008]And then your lessons can be integrated,
- [00:04:43.269]so you can make this game part of your course content.
- [00:04:47.882]You can use your existing content,
- [00:04:50.325]which I think is really cool, and a time-saver,
- [00:04:52.485]and as teachers, we all love to save time.
- [00:04:55.263]You can do quizzes with epic battles,
- [00:04:58.790]and again, so this pop quiz is longer just a pop quiz,
- [00:05:02.472]it's an epic battle.
- [00:05:03.806]And as a student that sounds so much more appealing
- [00:05:06.306]than, okay, pop quiz.
- [00:05:09.654]And you can invite parents
- [00:05:10.649]so the parents can see what's going on,
- [00:05:12.835]parents can play at home with their kids.
- [00:05:15.348]And I know, again, a lot of teachers
- [00:05:16.924]are trying to find ways
- [00:05:18.152]where they can reach out to their parents
- [00:05:19.601]and ways that are authentic,
- [00:05:21.680]and ways that save time not just for the teacher
- [00:05:23.676]but for the parents,
- [00:05:24.531]because let's face it, we're all busy.
- [00:05:26.480]And again, this is a great way
- [00:05:27.976]because they can access it on their phone,
- [00:05:29.878]they can access it on a tablet,
- [00:05:31.400]or they can get it on their computer.
- [00:05:34.761]So, you can go in and you create your class,
- [00:05:36.970]so I created a class and we'll look at that really quickly.
- [00:05:40.392]And I invited myself,
- [00:05:42.854]and picked my avatar, and then a background.
- [00:05:47.134]And again, it shows my stats,
- [00:05:50.719]it shows what level I'm at.
- [00:05:52.738]I chose protect as my first skill within the game.
- [00:05:59.277]And as we go through, there's a today's event.
- [00:06:04.784]And again, it's really cool graphics
- [00:06:06.453]that your students are going to be drawn to.
- [00:06:13.741]So what it says is our random even is if you're a warrior,
- [00:06:17.390]the warriors must stay seated until the bell.
- [00:06:20.634]And again, the computer generated that automatically,
- [00:06:23.873]and the next day it'll be a different randomized event.
- [00:06:29.607]And so this is where you manage your class content.
- [00:06:34.068]So you can import your homework, you can do discussions,
- [00:06:37.760]and like I said this is compatible with Google Classroom.
- [00:06:40.564]So, if you're using Google Classrooms in your schools
- [00:06:44.266]you can just automatically put it in there.
- [00:06:49.275]There is a for purchase version
- [00:06:51.378]that gives you some more options and some more features,
- [00:06:55.981]but the basic free version you can use all year long,
- [00:06:59.639]and you can have as many students
- [00:07:01.846]and use it for as many classes as you want.
- [00:07:04.704]So, I like free things,
- [00:07:07.350]I think this is a really good free app,
- [00:07:09.192]and it has a robustness
- [00:07:11.088]that's going to be really useful.
- [00:07:14.219]So again, like I said,
- [00:07:15.061]there's a lot more to this app.
- [00:07:18.422]But I would encourage you guys at home to try it out.
- [00:07:21.869]Maybe just set it up for a quarter,
- [00:07:24.120]go in and try it, see how it works with your students,
- [00:07:27.126]then if you like it, maybe do it for a semester
- [00:07:29.626]or a whole year.
- [00:07:31.752]But I'm Zoe Falls, and this is Classcraft.
- [00:07:34.893]Seeya.
- [00:07:35.826](upbeat music)
