- [00:00:25.080]for the National Park Service.
- [00:00:26.590]So, basically this is a web application that's
- [00:00:28.851]optimized for mobile viewing.
- [00:00:31.051]I did it for the National Park Service.
- [00:00:32.979]I was really fortunate enough to get an internship.
- [00:00:36.169]I work at the Arbor Day Foundation as an intern.
- [00:00:38.639]I'm interested in international development and I
- [00:00:41.680]thought that anthropology offered a holistic
- [00:00:43.912]perspective to participating in that field.

- [00:00:49.320]I am currently looking at a number of PhD programs
- [00:00:52.239]and I will be continuing on and doing research
- [00:00:56.160]both in digital and in My Sourcing Stories.

- [00:01:03.301]The facilities that UNL provides are cutting edge
- [00:01:06.101]and we're using new technology, such as the
- [00:01:08.330]Oculus Rift and the Leap Motion.
- [00:01:10.549]And then we use various 3D modeling software packages,
- [00:01:13.450]CityEngine, SketchUp, Blender.
- [00:01:17.007]We're using 3D laser scanning technology to
- [00:01:20.716]record artifacts.
- [00:01:22.058]We use this technology in our classes and
- [00:01:26.335]the purpose of that is to get our students
- [00:01:28.620]familiar with the process so that technology
- [00:01:31.333]becomes part of the teaching experience.
- [00:01:35.190]What we're seeing here is a castle from Germany,
- [00:01:37.841]called Burg Hohenecken.
- [00:01:39.991]So my master's research is the digitization of
- [00:01:42.379]this castle using photogrammetry, as is shown.
- [00:01:45.139]In this, it's a 3D model of it,
- [00:01:48.691]as well as laser scanning, which has an additional
- [00:01:51.201]3D model.
- [00:01:52.348]I was there working with the University of
- [00:01:53.761]Heidelberg and the University of Stuttgart
- [00:01:55.818]in order to produce them, and also doing research
- [00:01:58.800]on the history of the castle, as well.
- [00:02:01.604]These type of tools are really important in
- [00:02:03.886]anthropology, and specifically also archeology,
- [00:02:06.937]because it really brings people back into the past.
- [00:02:10.381]It helps us recreate the environments of
- [00:02:12.384]archeological sites.
- [00:02:13.631]We got an NEH grant to support the digitization
- [00:02:17.671]and preservation and access of material from
- [00:02:21.260]Salmon Pueblo.
- [00:02:23.114]My research is mostly based in Ohio,
- [00:02:25.714]particularly the Ohio Hopewell culture.
- [00:02:27.640]So I'm working with the field museum to bring
- [00:02:29.373]together a lot of the data that was collected,
- [00:02:31.954]a lot of the artifacts and put it back into the site
- [00:02:34.684]and understand how people excavated
- [00:02:37.183]and then derive new interpretations.
- [00:02:39.666]The bioanth lab is actually an incredible
- [00:02:42.244]lab and it really is great because there are
- [00:02:45.277]so many casts and it presents you with a hands-on
- [00:02:47.858]opportunity to work with these casts.
- [00:02:50.469]My thesis is on sourcing studies using
- [00:02:53.308]extractive fraction on ceramics here in Nebraska.
- [00:02:56.869]And then my second study is 3D reconstructions
- [00:03:00.879]of landscape and cityscapes.

- [00:03:05.368]The whole department is really collaborative.
- [00:03:06.869]The faculty and all the grad students
- [00:03:09.021]often work together.
- [00:03:10.301]One opportunity that the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:13.048]has provided is the Graduate Teaching Assistantship,
- [00:03:16.917]which is wonderful.
- [00:03:19.330]The department supports my goals by providing
- [00:03:22.152]feedback, by offering me opportunities.
- [00:03:24.701]The academics here will try to gear us
- [00:03:28.061]towards requiring skillsets that push us all
- [00:03:30.573]towards our own individual goals.
- [00:03:35.286]What makes Lincoln a good place to be is that,
- [00:03:38.229]it's a city but with a small town feel.
- [00:03:41.536]Lincoln, Nebraska is a great place to raise
- [00:03:42.845]a child, and I have one.
- [00:03:45.386]It's very much a college town.
- [00:03:48.026]There's always things to do around town,
- [00:03:50.536]concerts, clubs.
- [00:03:52.325]It's hard to explain.
- [00:03:53.917]I think Nebraska is a good place to do graduate
- [00:03:56.050]work, because it has a supportive environment,
- [00:03:58.298]an environment where you can thrive and be
- [00:04:00.268]excited about new opportunities.
- [00:04:01.740]We have some people who are here to get
- [00:04:04.730]a master's degree and then go and work
- [00:04:06.691]for National Park Service, National Forest Service.
- [00:04:10.101]Others who are trying to move onto higher education,
- [00:04:12.723]such as a PhD program and they push you forward
- [00:04:15.914]towards your goal of reaching whatever your next stage is.
