University of Nebraska Assistant Professor of Anthropology Carrie Heitman answers why it is important to maintain and study the Chaco Canyon area of New Mexico.

[00:00:05.419]in a very arid part of the American Southwest
[00:00:07.917]you see this absolute explosion of these monumental,
[00:00:12.117]and by monumental I mean 600 plus room masonry buildings,
[00:00:16.379]four to five stories tall,
[00:00:18.217]built with a huge amount of human labor.
[00:00:20.648]Clearly some sort of leadership to create these buildings.
[00:00:23.857]And this real elaboration of ritual investment,
[00:00:28.168]and ceremonial life that is unlike anything
[00:00:33.328]that we see prior to this period
[00:00:35.299]in the American Southwest.
[00:00:36.697]Anybody who's interested in the emergence
[00:00:38.917]of social inequality and hierarchical societies,
[00:00:42.297]they look to Chaco Canyon as a place
[00:00:45.259]where they wanna test those models,
[00:00:46.909]because it has a variety of really unique aspects
[00:00:49.840]for a society of this scale.
