- [00:00:00.682]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.644]Presentation Apps.
- [00:00:04.583](electronic music)
- [00:00:17.921]Hi, I'm Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:18.922]And I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:20.205]And this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom and today,
- [00:00:22.405]considering the new school year,
- [00:00:24.498]we're talking about presentation apps.
- [00:00:26.838]So Prezi is much more like Powerpoint and Google Slides
- [00:00:32.645]in the sense that you are just going
- [00:00:34.642]to be conveying the information.
- [00:00:36.220]One of the nice things about Prezi is
- [00:00:38.821]it does add some movement
- [00:00:41.198]as you're going through your presentation.
- [00:00:44.114]So I'm going to show a presentation I made
- [00:00:46.119]when I was teaching and it was based
- [00:00:49.612]on a reading that we had and this was my way
- [00:00:52.773]of guiding their discussion and I was doing this
- [00:00:55.275]to show them different ways of presenting.
- [00:01:01.734]No, I just want to present.
- [00:01:05.457]So this one as we go through,
- [00:01:07.715]you can start with arrows and it just starts
- [00:01:10.537]with the first one.
- [00:01:12.185]So again, I added an image just
- [00:01:13.742]to enhance what they're looking at.
- [00:01:16.385]These are quotes that the students put
- [00:01:18.004]on the discussion board responses
- [00:01:19.607]and I use this to prompt their in-class discussion.
- [00:01:23.982]So again this is not content delivery.
- [00:01:25.876]This is a way of helping me guide their discussion
- [00:01:29.307]and show them some cool technology along the way.
- [00:01:32.105]And again as you see, there's that movement sort of
- [00:01:34.984]like you would see in a slide transition
- [00:01:36.865]but this is maybe a little smoother.
- [00:01:39.007]Students really like this because you can collaborate easier
- [00:01:42.403]than you could in earlier versions of Powerpoint
- [00:01:48.945]so if you have a group presentation everyone
- [00:01:51.865]can be in here working at the same time.
- [00:01:54.146]They can all see it, you don't have
- [00:01:55.981]to worry about read-only copies and again it kind of moves,
- [00:02:00.903]you can chunk things so you can show
- [00:02:03.138]that this larger thing
- [00:02:05.147]and then little smaller points within it.
- [00:02:07.283]So the organization really helps convey the message.
- [00:02:09.704]Correct.
- [00:02:10.700]And that's part of I think teaching with
- [00:02:13.187]and teaching about Prezi is you have
- [00:02:16.803]to make sure that everybody's on the same page.
- [00:02:19.857]We're not doing this just to be cool.
- [00:02:21.343]We're doing this because you can start conveying a message
- [00:02:24.744]using this one thing inside the other,
- [00:02:28.407]one thing next to the other, moving really across
- [00:02:32.924]so I think that's really important.
- [00:02:35.569]The other thing is that it's stored online
- [00:02:37.378]so again we're talking about cloud storage
- [00:02:38.943]and the ability for people to consume it independently
- [00:02:41.540]if they just have a link or if they're actually shared
- [00:02:46.244]as creators they can do that collaboration.
- [00:02:52.144]And again as a teacher, I like when my students
- [00:02:53.139]do Prezi's because I can see how they are processing
- [00:02:57.142]the information based on how they layout their information
- [00:03:01.536]in ways that isn't always in clear
- [00:03:03.003]in something like Google Slides of Powerpoint.
- [00:03:07.103]Yeah, it's less linear.
- [00:03:08.121]It allows you the opportunity to be less linear.
- [00:03:11.364]Yes and so some of this
- [00:03:14.087]was me showing them again what the tool can do.
- [00:03:19.543]But again it moves you through it
- [00:03:24.064]and that movement is really a good way
- [00:03:27.423]to keep them engaged because it's something different,
- [00:03:30.906]something moves so they might catch it
- [00:03:32.926]out of the corner of the eye.
- [00:03:34.047]And it helps focus.
- [00:03:37.381]Exactly and then again it gives you that overview
- [00:03:39.486]at the end.
- [00:03:41.088]And you can choose your template
- [00:03:43.102]just like you can in anything else.
- [00:03:44.844]I chose the circuit template
- [00:03:46.283]because we're talking about technology so it seemed.
- [00:03:48.066]Appropriate.
- [00:03:49.923]Appropriate and to make sense.
- [00:03:50.968]Now unlike Perideck and Nearpod,
- [00:03:54.828]you can't automatically pull in something
- [00:03:56.785]from somewhere else.
- [00:03:58.068]These you do have to create from scratch
- [00:03:59.565]so if you are from a time crunch this might not be.
- [00:04:02.845]Although there is a way to bring in Powerpoints.
- [00:04:05.426]There is?
- [00:04:06.444]Yes, but then it looks like Powerpoint
- [00:04:07.965]which kind of defeats the purpose.
- [00:04:09.347]Oh, okay, well I didn't know that.
- [00:04:10.664]So when you're doing Perideck you can bring
- [00:04:13.306]in the Powerpoint and you're still presenting
- [00:04:15.343]to everybody in somewhat in a Powerpoint format.
- [00:04:17.706]When you bring anything into Prezi
- [00:04:20.724]it just looks like a Powerpoint which is really sad thing.
- [00:04:23.464]So can you do it, yes.
- [00:04:25.827]The question at that point is why would you
- [00:04:29.285]because you need to reorganize it you need
- [00:04:31.464]to do all of these things and at that point
- [00:04:33.908]because in my mind at least,
- [00:04:37.524]the Powerpoint was created with the Powerpoint mindset.
- [00:04:40.885]We're doing this then we're doing this
- [00:04:43.927]then we're doing this.
- [00:04:44.943]The beauty of Prezi and Emaze that I'm going
- [00:04:46.946]to briefly talk about
- [00:04:49.128]is that they're not necessarily linear
- [00:04:50.945]so you can navigate through them in different ways
- [00:04:54.403]and if you designed it to be consumed
- [00:04:57.458]kind of one step of a time it is.
- [00:04:59.566]It's really hard to.
- [00:05:01.563]So the benefits of translating I'm not sure.
- [00:05:05.458]I tried it a few times, it works
- [00:05:07.048]but I wasn't sure why I did it at the end of the day
- [00:05:11.623]because it didn't enhance the presentation much.
- [00:05:14.508]I mean it had cool transitions
- [00:05:15.702]but I can do that inside Powerpoint so that's my take
- [00:05:19.784]on that, on that translation.
- [00:05:21.286]Can you do it, yes.
- [00:05:22.275]Do you want to do it, not necessarily,
- [00:05:23.627]but it's up to you and I'm going
- [00:05:29.105]to briefly talk about Emaze.
- [00:05:30.106]We talked about Emaze previously
- [00:05:31.445]and I'll pull this up right now on the screen.
- [00:05:34.105]It takes the ideas behind Prezi in some ways
- [00:05:36.787]and takes them further so what they've created
- [00:05:40.084]is multiple templates that look very very different
- [00:05:43.004]than what we're used to that are very very cool.
- [00:05:45.226]This is the gallery template which
- [00:05:47.486]is probably my favorite one because
- [00:05:49.268]it actually walks you through a gallery
- [00:05:51.126]and you can have text on the side
- [00:05:52.646]and then you can have pictures and you can have just one
- [00:05:54.986]or you can have multiples.
- [00:05:56.286]And it's a great way to share information.
- [00:05:59.328]The movement through gives you that 3D feel a little bit
- [00:06:03.345]like a Prezi does but in a different way.
- [00:06:06.619]You can design it as much as you want or as little
- [00:06:10.801]as you want and it's a great way, again,
- [00:06:13.788]to freshen things up,
- [00:06:14.926]to do something a little bit different,
- [00:06:16.664]to share with students.
- [00:06:17.925]It's easy to share online, again it's stored online
- [00:06:20.238]and not necessarily on your device.
- [00:06:22.246]And let me show another format.
- [00:06:26.424]And this is the edit function.
- [00:06:27.422]I think this would be a great thing to show
- [00:06:28.564]to parents as sort of a summary of the end of the unit,
- [00:06:30.948]these are the projects that your kids were creating
- [00:06:35.365]and you could send out the link to them in an email
- [00:06:37.844]and they can just watch it at home
- [00:06:40.143]and have sort of that feel of being in an in-person display.
- [00:06:46.126]Yep, let me try this one, view.
- [00:06:48.781]I went into the edit.
- [00:06:50.423]Editing is very quick, it doesn't take much.
- [00:06:53.564]So this is a standard,
- [00:06:55.364]more of a standard presentation format
- [00:06:57.806]that we're all used to.
- [00:06:58.986]It just brings out one slide at a time.
- [00:07:06.190]So they have that as well, it's available,
- [00:07:09.069]it's not what I would do with this.
- [00:07:10.991]So if you are interested in, you're confident
- [00:07:13.307]with what you're doing but you want something else that
- [00:07:15.478]is a little bit more fun and helps convey the message
- [00:07:18.589]in different ways Emaze is a great way to go.
- [00:07:22.827]So today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:07:25.244]we talked about different presentations
- [00:07:26.925]and the way to freshen up what you're doing,
- [00:07:31.325]especially if you have, as we talked about with Perideck
- [00:07:34.530]a really what do you do if everybody's got to devise,
- [00:07:40.631]how do you provide that information to students
- [00:07:43.110]and we'll see you next time
- [00:07:45.205]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
