Description
At YNS camps, Nebraska students learn through engaging, active-learning style experiences and experience life on a college campus. The high school research program offers students an extended, paid taste of the camaraderie and focus of a university research team.
High school researchers work alongside mentors and other members of a research team to accomplish their research tasks.

- [00:00:02.907]So do you think you can add some more of that solution?
- [00:00:06.086]I'm looking at an onion skin right now.
- [00:00:08.706]There.
- [00:00:09.889]These three samples are fish skins--
- [00:00:12.421]They're able to get the hands-on experience
- [00:00:14.219]that they wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

- [00:00:24.211]I'm taking part in the Young Nebraska Scientists
- [00:00:26.291]High School Research Program.
- [00:00:28.061]The student is gonna be part of our research
- [00:00:30.704]to learn what we're doing in the lab
- [00:00:32.843]and how we think.
- [00:00:35.443]It's actually getting in the lab, actually doing things.
- [00:00:38.715]And during this I get to work
- [00:00:40.285]with a mentor which, in this case,
- [00:00:41.696]is a UNL professor.
- [00:00:43.085]They do a good job of explaining how to do things
- [00:00:45.755]but also letting you, kind of, take some time
- [00:00:48.684]to figure it out yourself.
- [00:00:50.104]It's a great way to maybe get into a field,
- [00:00:52.933]maybe understand how that field works.
- [00:00:55.714](upbeat music)
- [00:00:59.034]We're at a summer science camp here at the
- [00:01:00.988]University of Nebraska Lincoln to learn about chemistry.
- [00:01:02.628]Nanotechnology.
- [00:01:03.980]This is a carbon nanotube.
- [00:01:06.001]We're making some microscopes.
- [00:01:07.639]This is actually a spectrometer.
- [00:01:09.841]I've previously gone to a couple of
- [00:01:13.291]YNS camps when I was a kid
- [00:01:15.070]and that's when I really realized
- [00:01:16.942]I wanted to be an engineer.
- [00:01:18.651]It's been real eye-opening.
- [00:01:20.062]There's a lot more technology
- [00:01:21.571]and different approaches to science
- [00:01:23.120]that I haven't even heard of until I came to this camp.
- [00:01:25.350]The idea is to just basically give them,
- [00:01:27.320]you know, the experience and the knowledge.
- [00:01:29.930]If you go out of your comfort zone, like,
- [00:01:32.062]you don't know what you could find.
- [00:01:33.371]You could find something that excites you
- [00:01:35.709]more than anything you're doing already.
- [00:01:37.597](upbeat music)
- [00:01:41.298]And then you get the college experience,
- [00:01:43.098]for sure, being there you get to meet
- [00:01:44.938]all the new people in the dorms.
- [00:01:46.447]It's a good way to get to know other people
- [00:01:48.766]and just have a good time.
- [00:01:50.768](upbeat music)
- [00:01:55.096]It's a good way to get involved
- [00:01:58.106]with the community of the university.
- [00:02:00.976]You can get more in depth and understand more
- [00:02:03.383]and get your questions answered.
- [00:02:05.214]You could find your future career and excel at it.
- [00:02:08.227](upbeat music)
