- [00:00:01.043]Hi, this is Chris Marks, the associate dean
- [00:00:03.495]of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts
- [00:00:06.516]and this is a video showing you how to apply
- [00:00:09.347]for a Hixson-Lied student grant.
- [00:00:12.529]I hope you've already found this student grant website
- [00:00:16.446]on our college website
- [00:00:18.764]and that's how you found this video.
- [00:00:20.981]There's a short description of things
- [00:00:22.782]that Hixson-Lied grants have been used for in the past.
- [00:00:26.660]A set of quick links that takes you to NUgrant
- [00:00:30.081]which is the platform where you will apply for the grant.
- [00:00:33.923]A set of deadlines so you can click on that
- [00:00:36.833]and see when the various grants are due.
- [00:00:39.851]Four guidelines.
- [00:00:41.609]One for each of the kinds of grants
- [00:00:44.343]which we'll look at in just a moment,
- [00:00:46.100]a budget template which we'll also look at
- [00:00:48.555]and a report template from after
- [00:00:50.610]you have received and completed a grant.
- [00:00:54.854]There are four different grants
- [00:00:56.406]and these tell you some basic details about each one.
- [00:00:59.431]The Student Study Grant
- [00:01:00.860]is for studying at a program outside of the university
- [00:01:04.988]either domestically or abroad.
- [00:01:07.892]It's usually intended for travel expenses
- [00:01:10.842]and not for tuition.
- [00:01:13.535]The Student Presentation of Scholarly
- [00:01:15.982]and Creative Activity Grant
- [00:01:17.901]is an opportunity to have funding usually for travel
- [00:01:21.207]but sometimes also for shipping and other costs
- [00:01:24.602]to have for instance
- [00:01:26.611]art exhibited or to travel to perform in a competition
- [00:01:30.735]or to present a paper at a conference.
- [00:01:34.039]The Undergraduate and Graduate
- [00:01:36.041]Scholarly and Creative Activity Grants
- [00:01:37.924]are for creating projects or doing research
- [00:01:40.985]and the costs can be things like travel again
- [00:01:45.143]or art,
- [00:01:47.138]materials, recording,
- [00:01:50.489]costs,
- [00:01:52.206]other kinds of things that go along with a project
- [00:01:54.789]that might be otherwise difficult to complete.
- [00:01:57.924]So here you can also see all of the due dates
- [00:02:01.562]associated with that.
- [00:02:03.003]Basically, there's two due dates per year.
- [00:02:05.985]One in the fall semester, one in the spring semester.
- [00:02:12.514]So let's look at our set of guidelines.
- [00:02:16.745]This is one guideline,
- [00:02:19.378]the Student Presentation guideline.
- [00:02:21.175]Again, it talks about the applications
- [00:02:23.907]and the funding periods,
- [00:02:25.448]the maximum funding amount.
- [00:02:27.172]It talks about eligibility which you can read.
- [00:02:29.625]You have to be a full time student majoring in the college.
- [00:02:34.063]You must have a faculty sponsor.
- [00:02:36.646]That's important so before you begin your application,
- [00:02:40.438]you might want to make sure that you have a faculty member
- [00:02:42.644]who's willing to sponsor and recommend you for the grant.
- [00:02:47.015]The applications go through NUgrant
- [00:02:49.500]which I'll show you in a minute.
- [00:02:51.827]You'll need to fill out a budget template
- [00:02:54.196]which we'll also look at.
- [00:02:55.911]You'll need to create a description of your project
- [00:02:58.404]and that's true for all of the grants
- [00:03:00.527]so you need to describe the project
- [00:03:02.414]as convincingly as possible
- [00:03:04.413]in a Word or a PDF document and upload it to NUgrant
- [00:03:08.907]and also give yourself a brief biography
- [00:03:11.727]and a list of significant accomplishments
- [00:03:14.175]that will be uploaded.
- [00:03:16.503]A recommendation letter from the faculty sponsor
- [00:03:19.044]can either be given to you to upload onto NUgrant
- [00:03:22.026]or can be emailed directly to me
- [00:03:24.801]if the faculty member feels more comfortable with that.
- [00:03:29.052]The rest of the guidelines talk about review
- [00:03:31.209]and notification and the final report.
- [00:03:34.159]Pretty much all four of the guidelines look like this
- [00:03:36.859]and have the same kinds of elements.
- [00:03:40.519]So let's go to NUgrant.
- [00:03:43.572]When you go to NUgrant,
- [00:03:45.210]the first thing you'll get is hopefully this login.
- [00:03:48.191]You use your UNL ID and password
- [00:03:51.253]and you can quick login.
- [00:03:55.823]In order to start an application,
- [00:03:57.972]you're going to go the Main Menu,
- [00:04:00.474]look for Internal Competitions
- [00:04:02.841]because this is a competition for a grant
- [00:04:05.438]internal to the university
- [00:04:07.501]and click Add New Application
- [00:04:11.748]then you have to select the grant from this drop down menu.
- [00:04:15.669]When you click that, you'll see all of the grants
- [00:04:17.677]that are available within the university
- [00:04:20.054]and a number of them start with Hixson-Lied
- [00:04:23.361]so you're looking for a Hixson-Lied student grant,
- [00:04:26.130]whichever one is the appropriate one.
- [00:04:28.111]Let's click on the Presentation Grant
- [00:04:31.363]and that will allow you to
- [00:04:33.405]see the basic facts about it
- [00:04:35.207]and Download the RFA should give you the guidelines
- [00:04:38.970]that you might already have downloaded
- [00:04:40.765]from the college webpage
- [00:04:43.301]and if you click on Start Application,
- [00:04:46.322]you'll get something that looks like this.
- [00:04:48.813]This is the main form for application
- [00:04:51.184]so you need to give your project a title.
- [00:04:56.928]You'll need to type your name in
- [00:04:59.589]and it should recognize you
- [00:05:03.306]if you can type better than I can.
- [00:05:10.783]Department, you should be able to pull down
- [00:05:12.941]from a drop down menu
- [00:05:14.649]so if you're in music
- [00:05:15.901]and I think the rest should be fairly self explanatory.
- [00:05:19.490]Click the appropriate things.
- [00:05:22.022]You'll need to give the faculty member that's sponsoring you
- [00:05:25.757]and it'll search for their name
- [00:05:28.262]just like it did with the application,
- [00:05:30.471]the primary applicant.
- [00:05:32.023]If you have people that you're applying with,
- [00:05:34.088]there's a possibility here
- [00:05:35.599]of adding names to the application.
- [00:05:39.875]Most of the rest of this I think
- [00:05:41.281]should be fairly self explanatory
- [00:05:43.282]but as we scroll down,
- [00:05:44.843]here is where you upload the supporting files
- [00:05:47.701]so the project description here,
- [00:05:49.456]your biography here,
- [00:05:51.298]the faculty letter of recommendation.
- [00:05:53.672]If you want to submit any other supporting documents,
- [00:05:57.179]you can do that here
- [00:05:58.325]and finally, the budget.
- [00:06:00.653]You can save the application
- [00:06:03.549]and come back to it later if you like.
- [00:06:07.186]But once you've completed the page,
- [00:06:08.985]you click Check if page is complete
- [00:06:11.968]and then eventually, there is a way to submit it
- [00:06:15.968]and you can kind of keep going with that.
- [00:06:20.171]Now, let's look at the budget template.
- [00:06:22.502]This is the Excel file that you can download
- [00:06:24.710]from the college website
- [00:06:26.615]and you'll just fill in the shaded areas
- [00:06:29.110]in the template starting with your name.
- [00:06:32.564]You can pick you unit from the drop down menu
- [00:06:35.891]and also the grant that you're applying for.
- [00:06:38.464]You can pick the name of the grant
- [00:06:39.776]so Student Presentation Grant perhaps in this case.
- [00:06:43.704]You'll want to put the total of the amount
- [00:06:45.459]that you're requesting
- [00:06:46.646]which is going to be your expenses
- [00:06:48.771]as outlined below
- [00:06:50.938]usually up to the maximum amount of the grant.
- [00:06:54.611]This first page mostly has to do with travel
- [00:06:57.062]and if your project doesn't involve travel,
- [00:07:00.619]you won't need to fill those in
- [00:07:02.789]but if it does then it'll need to be here
- [00:07:04.989]and so if you're finding airfare quotes,
- [00:07:07.481]we want to know here for instance
- [00:07:09.567]where you're getting the quote
- [00:07:11.083]whether it's from Google or Expedia or someplace else.
- [00:07:14.886]Try to be just as detailed as you can
- [00:07:17.670]in terms of telling us
- [00:07:19.389]things like the name of the hotel
- [00:07:21.062]and the nightly rate if you're staying at a hotel and so on.
- [00:07:24.986]It should sum the travel expenses automatically.
- [00:07:28.743]Second page has to do with other kinds of fees
- [00:07:32.792]so if there's a conference registration fee
- [00:07:35.491]or consumable materials like if you're using art materials
- [00:07:38.943]and so on, those would go on this page.
- [00:07:41.908]There should be plenty of room
- [00:07:43.053]to make explanations about things
- [00:07:44.891]and so please be sure to provide
- [00:07:47.532]just as much detail as you can.
- [00:07:50.115]When these are evaluated,
- [00:07:52.037]the grant applications,
- [00:07:53.926]people are looking for evidence of lots of planning
- [00:07:57.217]and detailed thought and we want to know
- [00:08:00.214]that you've put a lot of thought into
- [00:08:02.220]how much things cost
- [00:08:03.433]and made sure you've looked at that very carefully.
- [00:08:06.665]So that's the budget template.
- [00:08:07.847]Once you've filled it in, you'll save it
- [00:08:09.486]and then upload it to NUgrant
- [00:08:11.853]in the spots that I showed you earlier.
- [00:08:14.752]So just a couple of other tips about the applications.
- [00:08:18.212]Be sure that you identify your faculty sponsor early
- [00:08:22.313]and give them plenty of time to write you a letter.
- [00:08:24.963]Don't have them do it at the last minute
- [00:08:27.086]so that you can get it either to me
- [00:08:29.246]or to you to upload to NUgrant.
- [00:08:31.952]Also, you should know that these applications
- [00:08:34.420]are evaluated by a group of students from across the college
- [00:08:38.158]so they may not know a lot about your field.
- [00:08:40.953]Be sure to write in a way
- [00:08:42.406]that someone that doesn't know about what you're doing
- [00:08:45.674]can understand it.
- [00:08:47.349]And finally, as you're writing your project descriptions,
- [00:08:49.923]remember that good writing is very important.
- [00:08:53.471]Things with lots of typos and bad grammar
- [00:08:55.733]don't usually look as good to the evaluators
- [00:08:59.094]so you have to be convincing and very clear
- [00:09:01.411]in your documentation.
- [00:09:03.744]So good luck and of course,
- [00:09:05.989]if you need to, you can ask questions
- [00:09:10.030]and my email is on that website
- [00:09:12.587]so feel free to get in touch with me.
- [00:09:14.729]Thank you.
