- [00:00:00.345]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.619]presentation apps.
- [00:00:04.664](techno music)
- [00:00:17.698]Hi, I'm Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:18.922]And I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:20.121]And this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:21.807]and today, considering the new school year,
- [00:00:24.564]we're talking about presentation apps.
- [00:00:27.055]So, I have a couple of different apps that I'm
- [00:00:29.283]gonna tell you about.
- [00:00:30.172]The first is Nearpod, and my favorite part about Nearpod,
- [00:00:34.261]is, that it's interactive.
- [00:00:36.238]It's a built in tool,
- [00:00:38.747]to make your presentations interactive,
- [00:00:40.410]so your students aren't just sitting there passively,
- [00:00:43.462]consuming the information.
- [00:00:45.630]And, you can do,
- [00:00:47.981]a lot of different things with it.
- [00:00:50.750]When you create
- [00:00:52.686]a presentation from scratch,
- [00:00:54.135]you can kind of really get that in-depth,
- [00:00:56.554]hands-on version,
- [00:00:57.506]but if you're kind of in a hurry,
- [00:00:59.162]'cause you realize the semester's gonna start
- [00:01:00.827]a lot quicker than you thought,
- [00:01:02.617]you can take presentations that you
- [00:01:04.282]have previously created,
- [00:01:05.522]in Google Slides or Powerpoint,
- [00:01:07.481]or even if you have PDFs, of content,
- [00:01:09.833]and you can dump it into Nearpod,
- [00:01:12.013]and it will automatically convert it,
- [00:01:13.658]and then you go in and add the interactive features,
- [00:01:16.739]at specific points in your presentation,
- [00:01:19.282]instead of having to recreate everything from scratch,
- [00:01:22.266]which is an awesome feature for me.
- [00:01:24.913]So, I have a presentation that, I use when I demo
- [00:01:29.893]Nearpod to teachers,
- [00:01:31.325]and, so I'm gonna go ahead and do a live session.
- [00:01:33.317]There is an option for student pace,
- [00:01:34.725]so if you have someone that missed class,
- [00:01:36.885]or you're teaching online,
- [00:01:38.677]there is an option where
- [00:01:39.725]you can share a student-paced presentation,
- [00:01:43.753]or if you have learners that need to go
- [00:01:46.019]at their own pace instead of yours.
- [00:01:47.881]And you can make it available to them, outside of school,
- [00:01:50.993]so they can look at it at home.
- [00:01:52.905]We're gonna go ahead and do a live session.
- [00:01:54.897]Okay, and I will join as a student.
- [00:01:57.353]So, when it loads it'll give a code.
- [00:02:01.728]And it's ZVNTJ.
- [00:02:05.161]Once all of your students are in,
- [00:02:06.889]and you're gonna see on the screen,
- [00:02:08.217]you're gonna see the teacher view.
- [00:02:10.889]So, it'll show me over here,
- [00:02:14.963]students, now your students do put their own name in,
- [00:02:19.249]so one of the things I always caution teachers
- [00:02:21.160]is set rules, before you use this.
- [00:02:24.049]Let them know that you see everything they do in here,
- [00:02:26.624]and you have the option
- [00:02:27.457]to share their responses with the class.
- [00:02:30.233]So, in teacher view, you get to see
- [00:02:32.216]who was signed in in your student list.
- [00:02:34.380]And as we go through you'll also
- [00:02:35.472]be able to see which of your students are participating,
- [00:02:37.893]how they're answering,
- [00:02:39.053]and that allows you to have those on the spot
- [00:02:42.397]knowledge checks.
- [00:02:44.069]And one of the things that I want to say is,
- [00:02:46.551]and you can see this, so you can see,
- [00:02:48.303]this is what I can see,
- [00:02:49.391]but I can't get,
- [00:02:50.767]I can't move fast forward or back,
- [00:02:54.409]without the instructor doing this.
- [00:02:56.007]So, one of the things about both Pear Deck,
- [00:03:01.166]and this one,
- [00:03:01.999]is that really the teacher controls the pace,
- [00:03:04.692]over everything that happens,
- [00:03:05.908]unless it's self-paced.
- [00:03:08.271]So, my first slide is just the intro.
- [00:03:11.932]Then it goes through,
- [00:03:12.765]and I have a Youtube video,
- [00:03:14.181]so you can import videos from Youtube.
- [00:03:16.341]Since this is on the planets,
- [00:03:17.708]this is a Bill Nye video.
- [00:03:19.949]This particular lesson is targeted
- [00:03:21.264]towards middle school aged
- [00:03:23.732]students, so
- [00:03:25.164]they can watch the video on their own.
- [00:03:27.540]So, after they've watched the video,
- [00:03:30.035]there's a question.
- [00:03:32.212]And the question will show up,
- [00:03:34.636]and this one is a true or false statement.
- [00:03:36.455]Pluto is still the last planet in the solar system.
- [00:03:40.283]So then go ahead and get an answer.
- [00:03:42.060]And what I do on my side,
- [00:03:43.340]is I just get the question, I have true or false,
- [00:03:45.956]and then I have a send button,
- [00:03:47.889]and it asks me to confirm,
- [00:03:49.404]so you can't just press it
- [00:03:50.964]and by mistake hit the answer.
- [00:03:52.404]It says, do you want to send this answer?
- [00:03:54.363]Absolutely I do.
- [00:03:55.948]So then in teacher view it'll show me,
- [00:03:58.604]it'll show me the answer.
- [00:04:00.460]And, so Guy chose B.
- [00:04:03.187]And I can choose to share the answers
- [00:04:05.451]with the class,
- [00:04:06.284]so what'll happen is they'll look on their screen,
- [00:04:08.884]and they'll see a pie chart showing how.
- [00:04:11.725]Like this.
- [00:04:12.558]And it's an anonymous pie chart.
- [00:04:13.916]The teacher get's to see, based on name,
- [00:04:16.795]who answered what.
- [00:04:17.629]The students only see the data.
- [00:04:21.056]And, so as a teacher you can see,
- [00:04:22.508]oh everybody seemed to understand that,
- [00:04:24.579]and then you can move on.
- [00:04:25.619]Or, they didn't, maybe I should refresh that
- [00:04:30.227]before we move on.
- [00:04:31.907]Um, so yeah, then we have some stuff
- [00:04:34.493]that should look, really really familiar.
- [00:04:36.587]Standard text, slide,
- [00:04:39.420]there are gonna be some more content slides here.
- [00:04:41.484]So this one is actually, a link
- [00:04:44.220]to NASA's website.
- [00:04:46.285]So, in Nearpod, I put,
- [00:04:48.862]and you can't see it on mine,
- [00:04:49.965]but the students see the web page.
- [00:04:52.097]So, what's really cool about this,
- [00:04:53.220]is you can control where they go.
- [00:04:55.597]You can give them those access to
- [00:04:57.356]information that's on the internet,
- [00:04:59.748]but you've sent them to a specific place.
- [00:05:02.388]Yeah, I'm trying to click on a link,
- [00:05:04.068]and it's not going.
- [00:05:05.608]And, so that shows them just the content
- [00:05:08.237]that you want them to have.
- [00:05:12.302]And then again, when it's time to move on,
- [00:05:14.789]I automatically move them forward.
- [00:05:17.431]So, I can push them through more of the content flags,
- [00:05:20.744]and then again, another question, to check for knowledge.
- [00:05:25.433]And you can have different types of questions.
- [00:05:28.124]So, the first one was a true or false.
- [00:05:30.397]This one, I asked them to list the planets
- [00:05:32.653]in the milky way.
- [00:05:33.990]So, the idea is for them to list as many as they can.
- [00:05:36.812]And again, this is one of those nice moments
- [00:05:39.382]where if you aren't one-to-one,
- [00:05:41.069]and they're in their groups,
- [00:05:42.586]they can work collaboratively.
- [00:05:44.036]And even if they are one-to-one, tell them to,
- [00:05:45.989]you know at their smaller tables, or with a partner,
- [00:05:49.492]to come up with the list together,
- [00:05:50.900]to get that collaboration going,
- [00:05:53.037]and to make the students more successful in their answers.
- [00:05:57.252]So, then again, on the teacher end,
- [00:06:00.100]you'll see when the answers start to populate.
- [00:06:04.908]And I can see that Guy,
- [00:06:06.972]Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter, Earth and Mars.
- [00:06:09.812]And again, I can share the answer.
- [00:06:13.466]So, and you can do that in a couple of different ways.
- [00:06:15.507]You can do that to show the correct answer.
- [00:06:17.998]You can do that to show an incorrect answer,
- [00:06:20.404]and have the students fill in
- [00:06:22.475]the missing pieces.
- [00:06:24.740]And you can do it without embarrassing any of your students,
- [00:06:27.124]because it's all anonymous.
- [00:06:28.483]Yeah, and on the other hand,
- [00:06:30.283]these are really great ways to start discussions,
- [00:06:33.235]so you can use this word,
- [00:06:35.116]or you can use this response,
- [00:06:37.396]whether it's quantitative, or like we just had,
- [00:06:39.715]text, to start a discussion around why does this work,
- [00:06:43.451]or what part of this answer is correct,
- [00:06:45.460]or what are some other area.
- [00:06:46.907]So there are lots of ways you can use that,
- [00:06:48.956]to get kids talking.
- [00:06:51.540]Exactly, so again this is just another
- [00:06:53.539]multiple choice question after some content slides,
- [00:06:56.974]and in this one they can choose more than one.
- [00:07:00.771]And again, so you can set the parameters of the questions
- [00:07:03.547]when you're setting up your, your slides.
- [00:07:06.212]So again, I can show the pie chart, of the answers.
- [00:07:12.464]And then I can unshare.
- [00:07:14.427]So the other thing is you can show multiple responses.
- [00:07:18.100]So, one of my personal favorite features,
- [00:07:21.211]is this is a twitter feed.
- [00:07:23.867]So I can pull in,
- [00:07:25.475]since this was on the planets and Mars,
- [00:07:28.011]I pulled in the Curiosity Rover's twitter feed,
- [00:07:30.915]because what junior higher doesn't think it's cool
- [00:07:32.851]that a robot has a twitter feed?
- [00:07:34.985]And, this is their live twitter feed.
- [00:07:37.483]Yes.
- [00:07:38.316]So this is in real time,
- [00:07:39.307]this is not some,
- [00:07:40.909]Correct.
- [00:07:41.742]Pictures of the twitter feed.
- [00:07:43.771]Yes, and it's the same way with the website.
- [00:07:46.171]It's locked down so they can't maneuver out of it,
- [00:07:48.411]but it's a live,
- [00:07:49.806]it's not you know like a history screenshot.
- [00:07:53.252]And again, another video, and this one deals
- [00:07:55.099]specifically with the Mars rover that we just, saw.
- [00:08:00.379]Again, more content slides.
- [00:08:03.093]And then, there's gonna be, a quiz at the end.
- [00:08:08.195]And, this one is only two questions.
- [00:08:11.331]But again, this is sort of that summary.
- [00:08:13.876]How much do you guys remember,
- [00:08:15.572]from our larger presentation?
- [00:08:19.108]So again, I can share the answers.
- [00:08:21.660]And, 50-50.
- [00:08:24.874]Good job.
- [00:08:25.715]Maybe.
- [00:08:28.138]And then, just a references slide at the end.
- [00:08:33.278]But, one of the other things you can do,
- [00:08:35.728]is, you can save information,
- [00:08:39.255]from the session.
- [00:08:41.190]So, you can track that,
- [00:08:43.982]so if you have separate classes,
- [00:08:46.214]but they're all doing the same thing,
- [00:08:47.966]you can track the progress of individual classes,
- [00:08:50.120]as they go through the presentation.
- [00:08:51.830]Okay.
- [00:08:52.854]So, the one thing that you didn't show
- [00:08:55.446]that I think is important to talk about,
- [00:08:56.937]is that you can have questions
- [00:08:59.782]that are involved with just circling and connecting.
- [00:09:03.158]Yes, so I am now kind of making my own,
- [00:09:07.150]in the add activity section,
- [00:09:09.230]you can do draw it.
- [00:09:11.302]And, this is where,
- [00:09:15.222]they would,
- [00:09:18.006]just draw their own response.
- [00:09:23.470]And that's where when they're on their tablet,
- [00:09:25.350]they're just using their finger,
- [00:09:26.914]and they're drawing.
- [00:09:28.118]So, if you wanted them to draw the rings of Jupiter,
- [00:09:30.634]you would put a planet,
- [00:09:32.098]and then have them draw, the rings on.
- [00:09:35.266]And, there's another activity where it's fill in the blanks.
- [00:09:39.731]And I think that option,
- [00:09:45.262]you paste the text, and then.
- [00:09:52.010]My text.
- [00:09:59.051]And then you tell it which one you want to see the blank.
- [00:10:06.276]And then when they do it,
- [00:10:08.167]they type in
- [00:10:10.234]their response.
- [00:10:11.666]It links to Google,
- [00:10:13.514]so if your students already have a Google account,
- [00:10:15.938]from Google in the Classroom, or something like that,
- [00:10:18.354]you can have them just log in,
- [00:10:20.234]with that so they don't have to have new
- [00:10:21.906]passwords or log ins.
- [00:10:23.274]And this is something we're all concerned with,
- [00:10:24.795]is how many log ins to remember.
- [00:10:26.724]Exactly.
- [00:10:27.557]And also whose information goes where.
- [00:10:29.410]So if you're already workin' with Google,
- [00:10:30.826]this is an easy way to think about this.
- [00:10:34.341]The one I want to talk about is called Pear Deck.
- [00:10:36.498]And, you can find it at Pear Deck dot com.
- [00:10:38.609]It's very similar,
- [00:10:40.505]so Nearpod and Pear Deck are almost identical.
- [00:10:44.025]Pear Deck does some things better.
- [00:10:45.681]It has some better items, or different items.
- [00:10:48.905]So right now I'm presenting, and this a seventh grade,
- [00:10:52.005]and this is an example that actually exists
- [00:10:54.654]inside Pear Deck.
- [00:10:57.203]And both have some lessons that are available for free,
- [00:11:01.990]and I suggest always downloading a few just to see
- [00:11:04.358]what other people are doing,
- [00:11:05.366]even if you're not teaching that.
- [00:11:06.920]If you are teaching that, that's fantastic.
- [00:11:08.742]Somebody may have done your work for you.
- [00:11:10.638]Not necessarily, but may have.
- [00:11:12.654]And so you can use it or change it,
- [00:11:14.720]and you can see it starts with the standard,
- [00:11:16.734]and it's a way to share.
- [00:11:18.125]And here's a,
- [00:11:21.005]so this is the kind of presentation
- [00:11:23.110]that really serves as a guide,
- [00:11:25.644]to you as a teacher,
- [00:11:26.788]and to anchor students' attention.
- [00:11:29.580]This is not the kind of thing that has lots of,
- [00:11:33.246]lots of interactive features.
- [00:11:35.223]Because there's not a lot of extra
- [00:11:37.946]stuff going on, for some students it's a lot easier
- [00:11:40.942]to focus on just
- [00:11:42.762]the one word, or the couple of words on the screen,
- [00:11:46.362]rather than in the other presentation,
- [00:11:48.009]that was more colorful, and in some cases more distracting,
- [00:11:52.554]for the learners to process through that information.
- [00:11:55.162]But, from all other features,
- [00:11:57.394]they're very, very similar
- [00:11:58.834]to what we have,
- [00:12:02.187]across both apps so
- [00:12:03.646]you can choose one or the others.
- [00:12:05.206]We've known districts that have chosen one or the other.
- [00:12:08.118]Pear Deck is more dependent on actually paying.
- [00:12:12.438]So, where we've seen it very successful
- [00:12:14.486]is when the districts pay,
- [00:12:15.966]and you get all the features,
- [00:12:17.614]because they're fantastic features.
- [00:12:18.998]They are.
- [00:12:21.406]But in Nearpod you can actually get quick access.
- [00:12:26.550]So, and for free, and try it out to do all of these things.
- [00:12:30.030]You can in Pear Deck, but again, you get less features.
- [00:12:32.734]So, that's something to think about.
- [00:12:34.526]If you don't have the support of your school district,
- [00:12:36.953]Nearpod may be an easier entry point.
- [00:12:41.222]So, that's about that.
- [00:12:43.349]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:12:45.919]we talked about different presentations.
- [00:12:48.824]And the way to freshen up what you're doing,
