Meet Amy: She is a directing/performance major in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Growing up in Arizona, Amy was the first child in her family to explore the arts. She loves being on stage and working with a group of people to create art. [00:00:03.933]I'm from Cave Creek, Arizona.
[00:00:05.527]I'm a Directing and Performance major here
[00:00:07.727]at the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film.
[00:00:09.990]I feel like I'm in the Temple Building 24/7.
[00:00:12.524]We constantly want to work on different projects
[00:00:14.374]and we say yes to everything,
[00:00:15.900]so we're just always here.
[00:00:18.991]I chose directing and performance because
[00:00:20.637]I love being on stage and working with
[00:00:22.637]a whole bunch of people to create art,
[00:00:24.164]and I knew that, if I was a director
[00:00:26.414]I would get to create that art and if I was
[00:00:28.864]a performer I would get to work with all those people
[00:00:30.814]and try so many new things.
[00:00:32.400]And so I knew that theater is what I wanted to do
[00:00:34.750]and UNL was where it was going to happen.
[00:00:38.064]When you're a theater major you get dialect work,
[00:00:39.964]movement work, acting, directing, stage management,
[00:00:44.050]design, lighting design, scenic design,
[00:00:46.712]makeup design, and, of course, stage combat,
[00:00:48.964]which is really great.
[00:00:51.387]I love just being outside in the greens
[00:00:54.174]and I love the art garden at Sheldon,
[00:00:57.024]so anytime I have that I'm away from the theater
[00:00:59.887]I like to go have picnics over there and just hang out.
[00:01:02.950]That's my space to kind of unwind.
[00:01:08.608]I love the faculty here.
[00:01:10.063]I feel like no matter what problem I have
[00:01:12.050]I can go to them and they'll be willing to help out.
[00:01:14.514]A lot of them have Emmy awards and other awards
[00:01:17.064]from film and theater and so they come directly from
[00:01:20.604]the professional world and we get to work with
[00:01:22.964]professionals from the time we're freshman on.
[00:01:26.677]Here we always talk about "Go before you're ready."
[00:01:29.427]No matter what I end up doing as long as I
[00:01:32.687]just jump right in and I'm not afraid of it,
[00:01:35.877]I will succeed.
[00:01:37.264]I know that I'll be able to find a job
[00:01:39.327]wherever I need to because I have that
[00:01:44.390]A lot of my family is in business.
[00:01:46.840]I think I'm kind of the first one to explore the arts
[00:01:50.590]My dream job would be to direct something
[00:01:53.401]that ends up touring that I can kind of
[00:01:55.214]hitch along and explore the U.S. with.
[00:01:59.188]I want to continue theater for the rest of my life.
