- [00:00:00.890](upbeat guitar music)
- [00:00:04.590]Yeah, the first thing that kinda pops into my mind
- [00:00:06.511]is just kinda having like a schedule laid out
- [00:00:09.122]and like pretty firm and solid, especially from the get-go,
- [00:00:12.278]and having those reminders throughout the semester.
- [00:00:15.485]I know students have different organizations
- [00:00:18.768]and responsibilities they have, so yeah,
- [00:00:22.957]the teacher might say something,
- [00:00:24.415]hey, this is due in a month or something,
- [00:00:26.323]but definitely reminders throughout is nice.
- [00:00:28.828]I know I personally use a planner pretty rigorously
- [00:00:31.786]but not everyone does, so just having a teacher kinda
- [00:00:34.968]keep reminding them, or just like say, hey,
- [00:00:37.637]be working on this project, don't put it off,
- [00:00:40.017]is like a good reminder cause otherwise
- [00:00:41.636]students probably will put it off, unfortunately.
- [00:00:44.594]I'd love for you to care about me.
- [00:00:46.777]Care about my name, care about my learning styles,
- [00:00:49.046]care about my story, where I come from
- [00:00:51.413]and what I'm hoping to write in the future.
- [00:00:54.037]Just care about me as a person and as a student
- [00:00:56.561]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:58.229]I'm very much a one-on-one person,
- [00:01:00.681]so I can meet with professor one-on-one
- [00:01:03.226]so I can get my questions answered
- [00:01:05.414]and any concerns I have, and they're available to help me.
- [00:01:08.083]It just makes me feel more comfortable in the classroom
- [00:01:10.655]and when I'm comfortable, I do better in situations,
- [00:01:13.960]so that's been really helpful.
- [00:01:15.514]And then, I guess on those lines, is keeping
- [00:01:17.767]an open line of communication with your students
- [00:01:19.749]just so they know what's going on.
- [00:01:21.237]Professors that I've had so far have been great
- [00:01:24.129]about emailing changes in the schedule,
- [00:01:25.739]emailing changes in the curriculum,
- [00:01:27.080]and that's been great because, being a college student,
- [00:01:30.089]I have this, I have a job, I have other schoolwork,
- [00:01:32.886]so being able to know what's going on
- [00:01:34.553]so I can plan and organize and stay
- [00:01:36.071]on top of things has been really great.
- [00:01:38.393]Being approachable for your students to come talk to you
- [00:01:41.870]I've found is always so helpful
- [00:01:44.735]just because if you are struggling and you approach you
- [00:01:49.519]and you're open to give your time freely
- [00:01:52.187]and you might be really busy, but as a student,
- [00:01:55.281]knowing that you will give that time to them
- [00:01:57.680]just makes the class feel that much more safe,
- [00:02:00.445]no matter what classroom it really is.
- [00:02:03.110]I really appreciate it when they make the class
- [00:02:08.159]a little bit more personable.
- [00:02:09.614]So if we're doing like a project or something,
- [00:02:13.067]really doing the project towards my specific career field
- [00:02:18.355]and applying what I'm learning in class to that project,
- [00:02:22.994]so that way, for me, it makes it a little bit more fun.
- [00:02:26.788]I'm more determined to kinda work on things that way,
- [00:02:30.898]if it's something I love to do.
- [00:02:33.091]I think allow some flexibility in class,
- [00:02:37.256]so flexibility in class, so if there's a discussion going
- [00:02:41.906]concerning the topic, to allow that discussion
- [00:02:45.256]to grow organically instead of moving on directly
- [00:02:49.051]to a scheduled item on the syllabus.
- [00:02:52.952]It was very vital; I think it's a best way to learn.
- [00:02:58.175]Future professors, I think if you really
- [00:03:01.481]listen to your students and hear them out,
- [00:03:04.505]a lot of them are first year students.
- [00:03:08.302]They've never come to college, so
- [00:03:09.906]if you take the time and listen to them,
- [00:03:12.233]I know tenure is gonna be really important to you
- [00:03:14.125]but also, students should come first,
- [00:03:16.428]and I think students really need your help in guidance
- [00:03:22.617]and really spelling out the syllabus
- [00:03:24.576]and being patient with them
- [00:03:26.424]and really putting the students first.
- [00:03:30.933]I think the biggest piece of advice would be
- [00:03:33.182]to make us want to come to class.
- [00:03:36.043]For a lot of us, we do know that
- [00:03:37.376]we are paying money for this,
- [00:03:39.532]but it's very detached from our like current situation
- [00:03:42.423]of when we want to get out of bed in the morning,
- [00:03:44.203]and so if they can make class really enjoyable
- [00:03:46.729]but not like so fun that it's a pushover,
- [00:03:49.069]but fun enough that we want to be there
- [00:03:52.633]and that we're challenged, that we actually,
- [00:03:54.262]we're learning something that's useful
- [00:03:55.979]to what it is we want to do, that's gonna help us
- [00:03:58.168]to really want to come to class,
- [00:03:59.758]to be engaged in class and to make their job a lot easier.
- [00:04:03.489]Well, for me, especially being from Minnesota,
- [00:04:06.010]so far away from home, it was nice to know that
- [00:04:08.161]I had someone that was supporting me here.
- [00:04:10.306]So, you know, my family is very supportive back home,
- [00:04:12.781]but it was nice that they, you know, were able
- [00:04:15.020]to organize some stuff around my schedule
- [00:04:17.918]so I could go back home and things like that,
- [00:04:19.883]and so they really pushed the extra mile
- [00:04:21.740]to make me feel that I could be successful here
- [00:04:23.841]and then eventually be successful out in the real world,
- [00:04:26.880]so really important for me to have that support here
- [00:04:29.566]when I, you know, was seven hours away from home.
- [00:04:32.650]We call the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:04:34.989]we're the people's college, so we pride ourselves
- [00:04:38.313]on the relationships that we build with our professors,
- [00:04:40.414]and that only comes from professors being relatable
- [00:04:43.201]to our students, so I think you could just extend a hand out
- [00:04:47.225]and like show the students how welcoming and warm you can be
- [00:04:51.150]then that will go a long ways, especially here in Nebraska.
- [00:04:54.042]It's all Nebraska nice, you'll get
- [00:04:55.966]used to it for sure, really quick.
