- [00:00:02.883]My name is Kate, and I'm majoring
- [00:00:04.651]in Microbiology and Environmental Studies.
- [00:00:06.810]Microbiology is the study of living
- [00:00:09.501]organisms that are microscopic.
- [00:00:11.992]Microbes are everywhere.
- [00:00:13.483]The paper we've chosen to present is titled
- [00:00:15.472]Targeted Anti-Cancer Effects.
- [00:00:17.483]Today in Molecular Genetics, my group is presenting
- [00:00:20.232]on new developments in cancer treatment.
- [00:00:23.024]So it was pretty successful as a cancer treatment.
- [00:00:28.584]I met Doctor Alfano because he's the advisor
- [00:00:31.434]for the Microbiology program, and through talking to him
- [00:00:33.875]I learned that he had an opening in his lab,
- [00:00:36.027]and they're studying plant microbe interactions.
- [00:00:38.427]It was something that really interested me,
- [00:00:40.154]and I was really excited to get to be a sophomore
- [00:00:42.466]and work in a lab and do experiments
- [00:00:44.793]and have some involvement in research.
- [00:00:47.355]So I work with Panya Kim, and she's a graduate student
- [00:00:50.091]here in Doctor Alfano's lab.
- [00:00:53.888]Together we do research on plant microbe interaction
- [00:00:57.067]and I learned the technique of making protein gels
- [00:00:59.945]and running PCRs and growing plants.
- [00:01:02.976]So our relationship is really close too,
- [00:01:05.333]and I learn a lot from her.
- [00:01:07.664]I studied abroad at Otago University
- [00:01:10.677]in Dunedin, New Zealand.
- [00:01:12.776]I think it really connected the dots for me
- [00:01:14.944]that I've chosen the right major,
- [00:01:17.237]and I definitely need to continue on the path
- [00:01:20.077]of environmental microbiology,
- [00:01:22.156]'cause I am really passionate about the environment
- [00:01:24.128]and climate change and protecting
- [00:01:25.968]the natural resources that we have.
- [00:01:28.134]We were gonna have elections.
- [00:01:29.827]I'm the president of UNL Microbiology Club,
- [00:01:32.237]and that is a club that meets once a month
- [00:01:34.528]throughout the semester, and it's open to all students,
- [00:01:37.296]anybody who's interested in microbiology.
- [00:01:39.968]We focus on life beneath our feet.
- [00:01:42.027]And it's really student-run,
- [00:01:44.014]so whatever their interests are are how we focus
- [00:01:46.513]what activities we do in the club.
- [00:01:48.864](upbeat music)
- [00:01:52.993]Nebraska was a great choice for me
- [00:01:54.624]because it's a Big 10 university
- [00:01:56.576]and it's a great value, and I feel like I'm getting
- [00:01:58.336]a solid education that will prepare me well for my future.
- [00:02:01.416]There's a lot that you can do with a microbiology degree,
- [00:02:04.605]everything from working for the government,
- [00:02:06.995]the FDA, USDA, medical school.
- [00:02:09.734]You could be a dentist, a vet,
- [00:02:12.176]you can go into research, teach.
- [00:02:14.805]The options are endless because microbes are everywhere.
- [00:02:18.099](upbeat music)
