- [00:00:01.186]Hi everyone, my name is Elizabeth Newhouse
- [00:00:03.322]and I'm a faculty member teaching in the
- [00:00:06.197]higher education and student affairs masters programs,
- [00:00:08.756]the educational leadership
- [00:00:10.019]and higher education doctoral program.
- [00:00:12.237]And I also teach research methods classes
- [00:00:14.256]across all of our graduate programs.
- [00:00:17.040]My research focuses on the ways that student experiences
- [00:00:20.331]influence their learning and development,
- [00:00:22.456]with a particular emphasis on the international dimensions
- [00:00:24.589]of higher education.
- [00:00:26.182]So my tips for you today are about academic integrity
- [00:00:29.422]and academic integrity is really simply about
- [00:00:31.947]just giving credit where credit is due.
- [00:00:33.758]For specific words and also for ideas.
- [00:00:37.179]In my experience there are really two types of issues
- [00:00:39.282]that students run into with academic integrity.
- [00:00:41.958]One is just blatant cheating, copying someone else's work
- [00:00:44.980]and taking credit for it for yourself.
- [00:00:47.284]And my tip on avoiding that is just don't do it.
- [00:00:49.538]The second type of academic integrity issue though,
- [00:00:52.229]is a little bit more complicated
- [00:00:53.669]and these are the accidental plagiarism issues.
- [00:00:57.037]And in my experience,
- [00:00:57.877]this really comes from two main places.
- [00:01:00.675]One is not really knowing and understanding
- [00:01:03.016]what the rules of academic integrity are
- [00:01:05.456]and what constitutes plagiarism.
- [00:01:07.277]And the other issue is
- [00:01:08.877]often with poor note taking and study habits.
- [00:01:11.760]So my tips for avoiding accidental plagiarism
- [00:01:15.229]are first, know what plagiarism is.
- [00:01:17.949]Watch this orientation, look at the grad studies website,
- [00:01:20.757]understand what it is that you should be doing
- [00:01:23.109]to appropriately give credit
- [00:01:24.437]for other people's words and ideas.
- [00:01:26.827]The second tip is to buy the APA manual.
- [00:01:29.848]Don't just rely on the websites that are out there,
- [00:01:32.067]which are really helpful, but buy the manual,
- [00:01:34.690]read it, get to know it, get to love it.
- [00:01:37.088]And the third tip that I have for you
- [00:01:38.585]is to develop really good note taking skills.
- [00:01:41.807]When you're reading,
- [00:01:42.640]particularly when you're reading something
- [00:01:44.093]that you're going to be writing about,
- [00:01:45.740]don't just highlight, don't just right down word for word,
- [00:01:48.985]what the key points are in the author's words,
- [00:01:51.548]but really read the article or the chapter in the book
- [00:01:55.073]and then in your own words
- [00:01:56.199]write down what those key points are.
- [00:01:58.106]This will make it a lot easier when you go back
- [00:01:59.919]to actually write about this topic to use your own words,
- [00:02:02.766]'cause it will already be in your own words.
- [00:02:05.488]Sometimes, of course, you have to use direct quotes.
- [00:02:07.869]You should use them sparingly, but when you do,
- [00:02:09.827]make sure that you write them down in your notes
- [00:02:11.560]as direct quotes.
- [00:02:12.730]Don't assume that you're gonna remember later
- [00:02:14.445]that that's a direct quote.
- [00:02:15.858]Put it in quotation marks, put the citation, the page number
- [00:02:18.831]and that way you'll be ready to go
- [00:02:20.287]when it's time to write your paper.
- [00:02:22.254]So those are my tips for you today
- [00:02:23.575]about avoiding issues with academic integrity.
- [00:02:26.135]Welcome to the program
- [00:02:27.361]and I look forward to meeting you in class
