- [00:00:01.975]Hi you folks, welcome to education administration.
- [00:00:04.845]My name is Deryl Hatch, I'm assistant professor
- [00:00:07.196]in education administration here and working
- [00:00:10.030]principally in the community college focus area within
- [00:00:12.823]higher education, advising doctoral students and masters
- [00:00:15.962]students alike.
- [00:00:18.626]I look forward to meeting you and classes
- [00:00:20.386]and getting to know you.
- [00:00:22.304]I been asked, I've volunteered to talk to you
- [00:00:24.568]a little bit about scholarly reading and writing.
- [00:00:28.278]And what I wanted to share with you are
- [00:00:30.058]ideas about how to approach your reading and writing
- [00:00:35.391]throughout your studies.
- [00:00:37.266]And a piece of advice I would share with you
- [00:00:39.801]is to, when you read articles read them twice.
- [00:00:43.578]Read them once for whatever assignment
- [00:00:45.312]or purpose you're looking at that for,
- [00:00:47.650]but then when you spot really good writing,
- [00:00:50.011]go back and look at the structure of how it's made.
- [00:00:56.053]And you'll notice that a piece of, whether it's a
- [00:00:58.933]dissertation or an article, especially the publications
- [00:01:01.919]you should be paying attention to,
- [00:01:04.178]they're built in this very specific structure.
- [00:01:06.302]Each paragraph not only does it deliver content
- [00:01:08.353]but it does a job.
- [00:01:09.891]And what I mean by doing the job is that
- [00:01:12.061]one portion, one piece of the argument
- [00:01:15.742]will lead to the next.
- [00:01:17.744]And particularly good articles and particularly
- [00:01:21.965]good dissertations, will do this.
- [00:01:24.588]One will lead to another, creating a really compelling
- [00:01:29.658]rationale for why something needs to be studied,
- [00:01:34.678]arriving to a question that leads to a review of the
- [00:01:38.341]literature to see how other people have done it.
- [00:01:40.817]A review of literature is not just a list of
- [00:01:42.765]who's done this and who's done that.
- [00:01:44.666]It's looking not just at what they've done
- [00:01:46.794]but how they've done it, that bridge to the method section.
- [00:01:50.371]And the literature review should inform your own choices
- [00:01:54.102]when you do research.
- [00:01:56.697]And whatever you find you report that as is
- [00:01:59.866]and that leads to implications and observations
- [00:02:03.037]about the relationships practices in research.
- [00:02:06.991]I say this because your job as a doctoral student
- [00:02:09.698]or even a masters student, a graduate student,
- [00:02:13.688]is to make a transition from being a student to a scholar.
- [00:02:18.385]Your job is no longer to learn about stuff.
- [00:02:21.261]You have an entire lifetime to learn about stuff
- [00:02:23.780]and improve your ability to learn stuff.
- [00:02:25.951]That's not your job anymore.
- [00:02:27.824]Your job now is to learn how to ask and answer
- [00:02:31.255]questions about important stuff.
- [00:02:33.730]So take whatever methods classes are in your programs.
- [00:02:36.880]Take them early and often because again,
- [00:02:39.807]you have a whole lifetime to learn about stuff.
- [00:02:41.968]You need to start asking the right questions and
- [00:02:44.737]understanding how other people have asked
- [00:02:46.781]and answered questions to improve on it,
- [00:02:48.578]whether it's in research or in your own practice.
- [00:02:51.473]So that's a little bit of advice to share with you.
- [00:02:53.868]I hope it's helpful and welcome again.
