- [00:00:01.310]Hi, my name is Marilyn Grady,
- [00:00:03.505]and I want to welcome you to our doctoral program
- [00:00:06.147]in educational administration.
- [00:00:07.475]I hope you have a magnificent experience in this program
- [00:00:10.732]because many of our students do.
- [00:00:13.246]I wanna tell you a little bit
- [00:00:14.079]about what my specialties are.
- [00:00:16.545]I'm all about leadership, leadership and practice,
- [00:00:19.858]studying leaders in action,
- [00:00:22.333]and research and writing is what makes my heart pound.
- [00:00:26.491]I've been fairly successful in my time here at UNL
- [00:00:29.677]in developing a model of advising doctoral students
- [00:00:33.275]and because we seem to have a very large number
- [00:00:36.516]of wonderful doctoral students, it's been very helpful to me
- [00:00:40.088]and I hope to my students over time,
- [00:00:43.325]and I think that I've developed a program,
- [00:00:47.562]a leadership program,
- [00:00:48.760]it's called the Women in Leadership Conference,
- [00:00:51.414]but it's always been for the women
- [00:00:53.416]and men students in our program,
- [00:00:55.557]and that'll occur this year on October
- [00:00:57.946]I think it's 9th and 10th
- [00:00:59.124]at the embassy suites here in Lincoln,
- [00:01:01.031]and I do hope you'll be able to come
- [00:01:02.444]because it was designed for you.
- [00:01:04.669]It's a great chance to meet other students in the program
- [00:01:07.534]and our faculty in the department,
- [00:01:09.781]and it's also an opportunity for you
- [00:01:11.494]to show and glow if you want to make a presentation.
- [00:01:14.175]So do think about that.
- [00:01:16.098]And I have a couple a tips for you
- [00:01:17.858]as far as being a doctoral student in this program.
- [00:01:21.252]I think the greatest resource we have as a program
- [00:01:25.167]is the diversity of students who come to this program.
- [00:01:28.098]They come from all over the world.
- [00:01:30.058]They have every kind of background
- [00:01:31.500]in an education organization you can imagine,
- [00:01:34.698]and they are very smart people
- [00:01:36.610]and they are very helpful to one another.
- [00:01:39.163]So the sooner you build a strong network
- [00:01:41.241]with your other classmates,
- [00:01:43.145]I think the happier you'll be
- [00:01:44.920]and possibly the more successful in the program,
- [00:01:47.680]and always, always whoever is your advisor is your guide
- [00:01:52.033]and to whatever extent you understand
- [00:01:53.701]what their research agenda is and their specialties
- [00:01:57.660]and you get to know their advisees,
- [00:02:00.317]you can see where the bar is
- [00:02:01.780]and you can work toward that bar as you make progress,
- [00:02:05.136]and always remember to stay in touch and ask questions.
- [00:02:08.955]Thanks for this opportunity,
- [00:02:10.232]and I hope to see you in person one of these days soon.
