- [00:00:01.322](pleasant music)
- [00:00:08.112]I chose to be a member of the Honors Program
- [00:00:10.700]because I really wanted to challenge myself
- [00:00:13.323]and really hold myself to a higher standard.
- [00:00:15.594]Also I wanted to surround myself by students
- [00:00:18.550]who also are dedicated to their academics.
- [00:00:21.818]During my tour they actually gave me
- [00:00:23.371]time to go and talk to
- [00:00:25.377]one of the directors of the Honors Program
- [00:00:27.216]and sit down and discuss
- [00:00:28.949]what it looked to be an Honors student here at UNL
- [00:00:31.585]and they explained that it was not so much about more work.
- [00:00:34.646]It wasn't about just the smaller class sizes.
- [00:00:37.255]It was about challenging students to understand concepts
- [00:00:40.302]as opposed to just memorizing terms
- [00:00:42.067]and repeating them back
- [00:00:43.230]and that's something I think I identified a lot with.
- [00:00:45.750]So my first year as an undeclared major
- [00:00:48.296]I didn't really know what I was doing.
- [00:00:50.398]I wandered into a class that I really loved
- [00:00:53.114]for Chicana Literature and that instructor helped me
- [00:00:56.161]learn about Honors.
- [00:00:57.060]I didn't know that it was something that was on campus.
- [00:00:58.900]As soon as I got on campus,
- [00:01:01.019]it was just the atmosphere that I wanted
- [00:01:03.155]out of my college experience
- [00:01:04.391]and all the Honors Program options
- [00:01:06.946]actually made it more of an incentive to come.
- [00:01:09.759]The academics really appealed to me
- [00:01:11.221]and then I got to know more about the Honors Program
- [00:01:13.714]and I kind of got encouraged to join it
- [00:01:14.960]so I thought that would be a good opportunity for me
- [00:01:17.460]to try and challenge myself a little bit more in college.
- [00:01:19.945]There is a lot of opportunity here at
- [00:01:22.166]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:01:24.021]There's opportunities from professors for internships,
- [00:01:28.424]for researching, for amazing scholarships,
- [00:01:31.543]for travelling abroad.
- [00:01:33.100]There is a ton of possibilities
- [00:01:34.460]that are out there for students to take.
- [00:01:37.380]There is such a broad spectrum
- [00:01:39.110]of things to do within the Honors Program
- [00:01:42.054]and the faculty is so great.
- [00:01:44.201]They are here for us and they want us to be successful
- [00:01:47.740]and that's, you can't ask for anything better than that.
- [00:01:52.473]I contracted one of my art history classes
- [00:01:54.609]with one of my favorite professors
- [00:01:57.715]and she was so fantastic and she worked with me
- [00:02:00.423]really closely to develop a final thesis paper
- [00:02:05.125]and I wouldn't have gotten that
- [00:02:06.703]kind of one-on-one with my teacher
- [00:02:08.119]if I hadn't contracted it.
- [00:02:09.854]With the Honors Program,
- [00:02:10.824]had I not taken my 189 seminar,
- [00:02:13.309]I took a digital humanities seminar
- [00:02:15.479]and it set me up for everything that I'm now doing.
- [00:02:18.986]I have a job at the
- [00:02:19.819]Center for Digital Research in the Humanities.
- [00:02:21.692]I have a UCARE project with the Walt Whitman Archive.
- [00:02:24.711]It was amazing how many opportunities opened up for me.
- [00:02:28.555]I am an undergraduate research assistant.
- [00:02:30.307]I'm currently funded through UCARE
- [00:02:32.120]and the Distinguished Life Sciences scholarship.
- [00:02:34.605]Basically what I do is I help graduate students in the lab
- [00:02:37.360]and I work on my own projects as well
- [00:02:39.345]and I love the Honors Program because of
- [00:02:41.267]all the opportunities you get as a student.
- [00:02:43.155]You just have so many more doors open
- [00:02:44.874]as an Honors Program student.
- [00:02:46.172]I have gotten a lot of research opportunities
- [00:02:48.732]just through Honors
- [00:02:49.565]not even through my lab
- [00:02:50.541]and that just enhances your learning experience even more.
- [00:02:53.164]One really good advice I heard from an advisor is
- [00:02:56.248]choose one involvement that is for you,
- [00:02:59.735]one for the community,
- [00:03:00.914]and then one for your profession.
- [00:03:02.638]This semester for example
- [00:03:03.494]I've really enjoyed working
- [00:03:04.632]with the advisor from the Honors Program,
- [00:03:06.271]getting to know her as well as
- [00:03:08.307]all the other faculty
- [00:03:09.594]and just making connections
- [00:03:11.326]that I can use in a professional career.
- [00:03:13.816]You should join Honors because
- [00:03:15.348]it is a really great experience.
- [00:03:16.648]You make a lot of connections
- [00:03:17.955]and connections are really valuable.
