- [00:00:00.187]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, Evernote.
- [00:00:03.181](upbeat music)
- [00:00:16.492]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls and welcome to
- [00:00:18.233]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:00:19.836]Today we're gonna take a look at Evernote.
- [00:00:21.925]Now Evernote is a program that I use a lot as a student
- [00:00:25.201]and I also use it a lot as a teacher.
- [00:00:27.082]When I teach my
- [00:00:29.662]students who they wanna be teachers themselves,
- [00:00:31.857]I always talk about how this app is really versatile.
- [00:00:35.108]They can share individual notes,
- [00:00:37.082]they can share an entire notebook,
- [00:00:38.939]they can select to share it with individuals
- [00:00:40.798]or as a teacher, you can choose to share notes as a class.
- [00:00:43.945]It's great because you can have it on any platform
- [00:00:46.933]and on any device.
- [00:00:48.114]So you can have it on your computer,
- [00:00:49.774]you can have it on your tablet
- [00:00:50.958]and you can have it on your phone.
- [00:00:53.118]Alright, so let's take a look at a couple of notebooks
- [00:00:55.091]that I have and show some of the different tools
- [00:00:58.040]that are within the application.
- [00:01:00.293]One of the other things that's nice about it
- [00:01:01.755]is it's free and as teachers, I know we like free things.
- [00:01:06.933]You can do as you see here, just a normal text note
- [00:01:12.263]and you know, you can type
- [00:01:15.655]anything you want.
- [00:01:17.280]You can change the font and color.
- [00:01:21.286]So
- [00:01:22.313]I can make it
- [00:01:24.786]green, okay.
- [00:01:27.621]But then one of the other cool things
- [00:01:29.362]is if you are on a mobile device,
- [00:01:31.614]is you can do a handwriting.
- [00:01:34.274]So you can just on your tablet...
- [00:01:37.630]On your tablet, you can just use your finger and draw.
- [00:01:41.520]Draw your notes, draw a diagram, draw what you're thinking,
- [00:01:45.560]sketch it out.
- [00:01:47.279]You can also take pictures.
- [00:01:49.995]So I was in a meeting and they had a handout
- [00:01:52.457]but there weren't enough handouts for everyone.
- [00:01:54.686]So, I took a picture of the handout
- [00:01:56.497]and inserted it into my notes,
- [00:01:59.306]where I could also take my typed notes
- [00:02:01.618]about what was going on in the meeting.
- [00:02:04.729]You can label them different things.
- [00:02:07.551]So digital humanities is a project I was working on.
- [00:02:10.907]But it'll also
- [00:02:13.302]give you just a location.
- [00:02:15.856]So like this note, I didn't name it
- [00:02:18.206]so it told me what I did.
- [00:02:19.596]I did handwriting and I was in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:02:23.098]So you can keep track of where you were,
- [00:02:25.669]it might help jog things if you're like me
- [00:02:27.275]and typing away on my note and then I forget
- [00:02:29.946]everything else that was going on.
- [00:02:32.570]And they automatically store it
- [00:02:34.335]so you don't have to keep hitting save
- [00:02:36.123]or worrying about that.
- [00:02:37.145]It'll automatically save it and sync if to the cloud.
- [00:02:42.242]But let's go look at the sharing features.
- [00:02:44.564]So I can share it to Twitter, Linked-in, email
- [00:02:48.558]or share a link, similar to what you can do in Google
- [00:02:50.880]as far as sending a link.
- [00:02:53.168]But if you wanna just send a note
- [00:02:56.106]and you can see here, I have a couple of people
- [00:02:57.929]I've shared notes with in the past.
- [00:03:00.078]You can select an email
- [00:03:06.812]and you can select the note
- [00:03:10.388]and you can give them different types of permissions.
- [00:03:12.454]You can tell them that they can edit it as well
- [00:03:14.381]so they can be collaborators,
- [00:03:16.030]or they can just view it.
- [00:03:17.121]So if they're notes from a lecture
- [00:03:18.451]that you want your students to have access to for a test
- [00:03:23.056]or if kids are working on a group project in your class,
- [00:03:25.498]you can have them collaborate in this one space
- [00:03:28.191]and then as the teacher, you can oversee what's going on.
- [00:03:32.905]And so then you would send it that way,
- [00:03:34.739]they would get an email.
- [00:03:36.179]They do have to have the app themselves
- [00:03:37.688]but since it's free, it's really easy for them to download
- [00:03:40.684]from the iTunes store or if you're on Android, from...
- [00:03:45.690]Googleplay.
- [00:03:47.885]So, and like I said it's Evernote.com
- [00:03:50.462]so you can have it on your desktop
- [00:03:52.413]and you can have it mobily.
- [00:03:53.527]You can also do tagging which a lot of students
- [00:03:57.057]are gonna be familiar with, tagging
- [00:03:59.448]because that's what they can do in Twitter.
- [00:04:01.167]So you can hashtag what your note is
- [00:04:03.605]to make it easier to search as you collect
- [00:04:05.637]more and more of them.
- [00:04:06.845]So it's an automatic filing system
- [00:04:08.377]without having to put them into folders.
- [00:04:12.301]You can set up different notebooks,
- [00:04:13.498]so if you have different classes
- [00:04:15.727]and you know you have history 101 and history 201,
- [00:04:19.978]each class can have it's own separate notebook
- [00:04:22.464]and then you can have notes within it.
- [00:04:24.391]So I always imagine them as those old spiral notebooks
- [00:04:27.270]and then you have like the shelf of them.
- [00:04:29.174]Well now you can do the same thing,
- [00:04:30.498]they're just digital.
- [00:04:34.770]You can also do a work chat.
- [00:04:36.767]So this is kind of a nice feature.
- [00:04:39.136]Sometimes in classroom, it can be maybe
- [00:04:40.903]a little bit hard to manage
- [00:04:42.599]because they can do group chatting within the notes.
- [00:04:48.334]I don't use it as much as a teacher
- [00:04:50.656]but as a student, it's kinda nice
- [00:04:52.479]because in the same way you can in Google docs,
- [00:04:54.894]you can have this live chat going on
- [00:04:56.473]while you're working on a document.
- [00:04:58.818]It can make collaboration go a little bit smoother.
- [00:05:03.346]So when you go to create a note, it's really easy.
- [00:05:07.340]You just go click on the plus sign.
- [00:05:09.489]It's gonna look the same no matter what platform
- [00:05:11.335]or device you're on,
- [00:05:12.752]and then you get a new notebook
- [00:05:14.401]it's gonna tell you to title it.
- [00:05:15.654]If you forget, that's okay.
- [00:05:18.987]So we're gonna call this test note.
- [00:05:22.784]And then again, you can tag it
- [00:05:26.848]and you can give it a tag of test
- [00:05:29.816]and
- [00:05:31.361]tech edge.
- [00:05:33.892]And then again, all of your different features
- [00:05:35.447]that should look fairly familiar
- [00:05:36.980]from Word or from Google Docs.
- [00:05:40.718]You can insert a checklist,
- [00:05:42.878]so if there are a list of things that need to happen,
- [00:05:46.895]you can do a checklist, you can do bullets and lists
- [00:05:49.960]and you can also insert
- [00:05:52.921]images and other things that you take
- [00:06:00.050]from other places.
- [00:06:00.883]So I'm gonna switch over to the mobile one.
- [00:06:05.798]So when I'm on the mobile device,
- [00:06:07.678]and I'm gonna go ahead and start a new note,
- [00:06:10.697]and I if you look up at the top,
- [00:06:13.112]I can take a picture.
- [00:06:15.062]So I'm just take (mumbles)
- [00:06:18.429]just gonna take a little picture over here,
- [00:06:21.030]take that picture, tell it save,
- [00:06:23.700]and it automatically inserts it into my note.
- [00:06:29.853]And then (mumbles) hand drawing
- [00:06:32.849]I can do, which is right next to the video,
- [00:06:37.052]so I can sketch it and I can say hi.
- [00:06:42.462]You can change it to a marker
- [00:06:45.318]and then you can erase.
- [00:06:48.383]And then done.
- [00:06:49.288]And same thing, it'll insert it right into that same note.
- [00:06:52.888]So you can keep different types of notes
- [00:06:54.931]all within sort of one page of that notebook.
- [00:06:59.064]Tell it save
- [00:07:02.490]and...
- [00:07:03.750]then I've got a note.
- [00:07:05.398]And it time stamps it automatically for me
- [00:07:07.302]so since this one I didn't give it a name,
- [00:07:09.648]I can go oh yeah, and look it up that way.
- [00:07:13.293]So those are some of the features
- [00:07:14.779]that I like most about Evernote.
- [00:07:16.846]You can share it, you can take pictures,
- [00:07:19.168]you can do handwriting, you can type.
- [00:07:21.536]So it's really really versatile and it's really powerful,
- [00:07:23.720]especially because you can share it and collaborate.
- [00:07:27.227](bright music)
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
You can always jump over to MediaHub and check it out there.
