- [00:00:00.276]Now that you know about the different
- [00:00:01.530]program types, it's time to think about your academic,
- [00:00:04.641]professional and personal goals.
- [00:00:06.754]Academically, what do you hope to learn while you're abroad?
- [00:00:09.448]Are you hoping to obtain credit for your major or minor?
- [00:00:12.049]Or maybe you're hoping to complete Achievement Centered
- [00:00:15.032]Education requirements, also known as ACE requirements.
- [00:00:18.898]It is really important that you speak
- [00:00:20.083]with your academic advisor about studying abroad
- [00:00:22.567]whether you are planning to go on a short three week
- [00:00:24.738]faculty led program or an exchange program
- [00:00:26.968]for an academic year.
- [00:00:28.474]Your academic advisor is going to know the ins and outs
- [00:00:30.958]of your degree program and should be able to tell you
- [00:00:33.361]the best time for your major to go abroad
- [00:00:35.393]and which classes you have flexibility to take overseas.
- [00:00:39.503]Professionally, we find that employers really like
- [00:00:41.825]seeing study abroad on resumes.
- [00:00:43.915]The world is becoming an increasingly interconnected place.
- [00:00:47.793]So the more experience you have with other countries,
- [00:00:49.871]the better.
- [00:00:51.218]Personal goals mean something different to every student.
- [00:00:54.317]What are your goals?
- [00:00:55.455]Are you hoping to become fluent in another language?
- [00:00:58.509]Are you hoping to join a student organization abroad?
- [00:01:01.446]Are you maybe hoping to discover your heritage
- [00:01:03.640]by studying abroad in the country where your grandparents
- [00:01:05.927]or great grandparents are from?
- [00:01:07.843]If you have personal goals, make sure that when you meet
- [00:01:10.328]with your Education Abroad Coordinator you talk about these
- [00:01:13.335]so that we can find a program for you
- [00:01:15.297]that meets all of your needs and goals.
- [00:01:19.012]To be proactive in your search for a program,
- [00:01:21.125]we also recommend that you consider
- [00:01:22.634]the five bullet-ed items on this slide,
- [00:01:24.956]which include location, cost, language
- [00:01:26.953]and program length.
- [00:01:28.300]Location might seem quite obvious,
- [00:01:30.215]but it is really important that you think beyond
- [00:01:31.887]just the country or countries that interest you.
- [00:01:34.743]For example, some students want large international cities
- [00:01:37.924]where you may meet a lot of other international travelers,
- [00:01:40.653]including other Americans.
- [00:01:42.243]Some students want to study in smaller towns
- [00:01:44.229]so that they can really get to know the local culture.
- [00:01:47.085]It is really important that when you're ready to meet
- [00:01:48.904]with a coordinator, you not only have the desired countries
- [00:01:52.736]in mind, but also the cities within those countries in mind
- [00:01:56.172]because just like the United States, domestically,
- [00:01:58.529]countries are going to be very diverse culturally
- [00:02:00.863]and geographically.
- [00:02:02.825]The next item, cost, may also seem quite obvious,
- [00:02:05.309]but it is really important.
- [00:02:06.807]Prices really do vary depending on how long you are abroad
- [00:02:10.557]and more importantly, where you are going to be abroad.
- [00:02:13.413]We highly encourage you to investigate the cost of living
- [00:02:15.782]in the countries that interest you
- [00:02:17.570]before you meet with a coordinator.
- [00:02:19.938]In regards to housing, there are generally
- [00:02:21.819]three different types.
- [00:02:23.119]Most programs will offer dormitory types options,
- [00:02:26.219]very similar to UNL.
- [00:02:27.960]Some cities may offer an apartment or flat option
- [00:02:31.769]and finally, some programs may offer homestay options.
- [00:02:35.193]Homestays are when you are actually living with a family,
- [00:02:37.841]which is a great opportunity for students that are hoping
- [00:02:40.302]to learn another language.
- [00:02:42.415]On that note, if language is a priority,
- [00:02:44.818]we have many programs available that will help you
- [00:02:46.975]develop your language skills
- [00:02:48.612]because what better way to learn
- [00:02:49.865]or become fluent in a language
- [00:02:51.375]than study abroad in the place that it's spoken
- [00:02:53.418]among the locals?
- [00:02:55.043]If language is not a priority,
- [00:02:56.762]don't let this deter you from participating
- [00:02:58.805]on a study abroad program.
- [00:03:00.686]Most of the programs that we have on our website
- [00:03:02.799]allow you to take classes in English,
- [00:03:04.924]even if the native language within that country
- [00:03:07.292]is not English.
- [00:03:09.173]Last, but not least, you should consider how long
- [00:03:11.414]you would like to be abroad.
- [00:03:13.294]You may need to speak with your academic advisor
- [00:03:15.616]about the feasibility of study abroad,
- [00:03:17.335]particularly if you are thinking about a semester
- [00:03:19.854]or an academic year.
- [00:03:21.491]As mentioned before, some majors have a lot of flexibility.
- [00:03:24.882]Some majors may be a little more structured
- [00:03:27.026]and you may only have the option of going abroad
- [00:03:29.139]during the summer.
- [00:03:32.692]This now brings us to the point in the presentation
- [00:03:34.607]where we will discuss searching for a program.
- [00:03:37.266]To start this process, please go to
- [00:03:38.903]the Education Abroad Office homepage.
- [00:03:41.387]EducationAbroad.unl.edu
- [00:03:44.859]Begin the search by clicking on the magnifying glass icon
- [00:03:47.587]labeled Program Search.
- [00:03:51.511]Now that you have made it to the program search page
- [00:03:53.798]you can filter your search any way that you wish.
- [00:03:56.620]I recommend choosing a country and a term to start with.
- [00:03:59.847]As an example, I am going to search for a program
- [00:04:02.529]to Japan for any term.
- [00:04:06.778]On the search results page, there are a number of programs
- [00:04:09.437]that are pulled.
- [00:04:10.784]The results at the very top of the page
- [00:04:12.293]are always going to be UNL specific programs,
- [00:04:15.149]starting with UNL faculty led programs
- [00:04:17.692]and then exchange programs.
- [00:04:19.573]The last program results that will appear
- [00:04:21.651]are the affiliate programs.
- [00:04:23.694]These will usually have abbreviated names,
- [00:04:25.610]such as IES, also known as the Institute
- [00:04:28.826]for International Education.
- [00:04:31.438]If a search result interests you,
- [00:04:33.400]simply click on it to learn more.
- [00:04:38.346]On the programs brochure page, you will be able to learn
- [00:04:41.005]more about the program.
- [00:04:42.711]If you were looking at an affiliate program,
- [00:04:44.766]it is also helpful to look at the affiliates website
- [00:04:47.460]to learn more about the program
- [00:04:49.062]in addition to reviewing it on the UNL information page.
- [00:04:53.555]During this process, you can apply or save the application
- [00:04:56.701]by clicking on the top right of the screen.
- [00:04:59.639]Please note, some applications may require essays,
- [00:05:02.913]transcripts or may be open only to specific majors.
- [00:05:07.290]Also, keep in mind that most programs have GPA requirements.
- [00:05:11.899]Don't feel that you need to come to your first appointment
- [00:05:14.279]knowing exactly what program you want to go on.
- [00:05:16.938]The Education Abroad Office is here to help you
- [00:05:19.143]narrow down the search.
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
You can always jump over to MediaHub and check it out there.
