- [00:00:00.854]Hello, and welcome
- [00:00:02.102]to the Education Abroad Office Go Abroad Session,
- [00:00:04.860]also known as a Go Session.
- [00:00:06.740]During this presentation, you will learn about
- [00:00:08.388]the different services Education Abroad Office provides,
- [00:00:12.162]the different ways that you can go abroad,
- [00:00:14.251]the different options available here at UNL,
- [00:00:17.222]how to search for a program,
- [00:00:18.693]and some general information about scholarships.
- [00:00:24.029]Most students know that the Education Abroad Office
- [00:00:26.036]helps students find Study Abroad programs,
- [00:00:28.519]but did you know we also assist students with internships,
- [00:00:32.092]research, and service-learning opportunities?
- [00:00:35.482]You can also combine these experiences,
- [00:00:37.921]as many of our programs are multi-faceted.
- [00:00:43.261]There are three program types available for students
- [00:00:45.859]that wish to participate in education abroad.
- [00:00:48.497]They are Faculty-Led Programs, Exchange Programs,
- [00:00:51.986]and Affiliated Programs.
- [00:00:56.068]The first type of program, Faculty-Led Programs,
- [00:00:58.598]are very popular here at UNL.
- [00:01:00.747]Faculty-Led Programs are popular for a number of reasons.
- [00:01:04.272]The first thing that the credit that you are receiving
- [00:01:06.158]for the experience is UNL credit,
- [00:01:08.807]at least in most cases.
- [00:01:10.145]Faculty-Led Programs are also popular
- [00:01:12.139]because students travel with trusted UNL faculty,
- [00:01:14.927]and they also travel with other UNL students.
- [00:01:17.671]The majority of our Faculty-Led Programs
- [00:01:19.625]are offered in the summer,
- [00:01:20.833]and are usually two to four weeks.
- [00:01:22.634]There are also a few programs that occur during the winter,
- [00:01:25.065]spring break, and during the semester.
- [00:01:28.199]This upcoming summer, we are planning to run
- [00:01:30.008]48 Faculty-Led Programs.
- [00:01:32.328]These not only range in location,
- [00:01:33.854]they also range in academic subject.
- [00:01:36.185]So the probability of you finding a Faculty-Led Program
- [00:01:39.346]that is somehow connected to your major, minor,
- [00:01:41.262]or your interests, is going to be quite high.
- [00:01:45.422]The next type of option available
- [00:01:46.830]is an Exchange Student option.
- [00:01:49.464]If you are a student that is interested
- [00:01:51.077]in immersive and longer experience abroad,
- [00:01:53.789]an Exchange Program might be a good fit for you.
- [00:01:56.516]UNL currently has bilateral agreements
- [00:01:58.456]with universities in Western Europe,
- [00:02:00.299]Southeast Asia, and Australia.
- [00:02:02.605]The benefit of having these relationships
- [00:02:04.529]with universities overseas is that UNL can continue
- [00:02:07.493]to charge students UNL tuition and fees,
- [00:02:10.523]rather than have students pay international student fees.
- [00:02:14.134]For this reason, Exchange Programs
- [00:02:15.950]can be quite cost-effective,
- [00:02:17.886]especially for Nebraska residents.
- [00:02:20.391]Students who are interested in Exchange Programs
- [00:02:22.471]must be willing to go abroad for at least a semester,
- [00:02:25.438]and must be very independent and resourceful,
- [00:02:28.241]because you will be enrolling as an international student,
- [00:02:31.330]and you may be the only American in your classes,
- [00:02:33.883]and possibly dormitory.
- [00:02:35.935]Another important thing to know about Exchange Programs
- [00:02:38.112]is that since you are enrolling
- [00:02:39.321]at an international university, the credit you will receive
- [00:02:42.194]will come back to UNL as transfer credit.
- [00:02:44.757]It is extremely important that if you are going
- [00:02:46.807]on an Exchange Program, you are work very closely
- [00:02:49.820]with your academic advisor and transfer evaluator,
- [00:02:52.865]because you will need to get your classes preapproved
- [00:02:55.039]before you go abroad.
- [00:02:56.751]That way, when you return to the United States,
- [00:02:58.729]you'll know exactly how your credits will count
- [00:03:00.611]towards your degree program,
- [00:03:01.982]and you can stay on track with your academic plan.
- [00:03:05.579]The final program option available
- [00:03:09.458]is called an Affiliated Program.
- [00:03:11.524]Affiliated Programs are US-based organizations
- [00:03:14.064]that create study abroad programs for college students.
- [00:03:16.701]These programs offer a wide range
- [00:03:18.385]of academic disciplines and destinations.
- [00:03:21.062]The benefit of going on these Affiliated Programs
- [00:03:23.117]is that there's a lot of support in-country,
- [00:03:25.604]and they offer academic year, semester,
- [00:03:27.727]and several summer sessions.
- [00:03:29.584]You will also be going with a group of American students
- [00:03:31.995]and you will have a resident director,
- [00:03:34.039]and other staff that will organize cultural activities,
- [00:03:37.216]housing, act as a liaison between students
- [00:03:40.018]and the local university, and are available 24/7
- [00:03:43.131]in case of an emergency.
- [00:03:45.570]Like Exchange Programs, if you go on an Affiliated Program,
- [00:03:48.373]you will need to get the credit
- [00:03:49.639]that you are taking abroad preapproved, because the credit
- [00:03:52.469]will need to come back as transfer credit.
- [00:03:55.278]A big difference between Affiliated Programs
- [00:03:57.480]and the other two programs mentioned before
- [00:03:59.755]is that you won't be paying UNL tuition fees.
- [00:04:02.606]You will, instead, be paying an all-inclusive fee
- [00:04:04.922]that usually covers tuition, housing,
- [00:04:07.188]excursions, and sometimes meals.
- [00:04:09.916]At UNL, we have a billing agreement
- [00:04:11.733]with the majority of our Affiliated Programs,
- [00:04:14.604]which means that although you are paying
- [00:04:16.070]affiliate fees, everything will still be routed
- [00:04:18.709]through your MyRED account.
- [00:04:20.903]This concludes the information
- [00:04:22.260]about the different programs offered here at UNL.
- [00:04:24.817]Which program sounds like it might be a good fit for you?
