- [00:00:00.000]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.186]chromebooks versus iPads.
- [00:00:04.152](techno music)
- [00:00:17.578]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin,
- [00:00:19.234]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:21.012]and today I want to talk about chromebooks versus iPads.
- [00:00:24.266]A lot of schools are making choices about what devices
- [00:00:26.949]to buy.
- [00:00:27.782]Some of them are going one way,
- [00:00:28.837]some are going the other way.
- [00:00:30.166]I've for a long time been a huge advocate for iPads,
- [00:00:33.492]and I still think iPads are great,
- [00:00:35.309]but I did want to take the opportunity
- [00:00:37.423]and do a comparison of both just to see what works in what
- [00:00:42.642]conditions, and I think that the answer has the be
- [00:00:45.029]connected, at least to, what do you exactly want
- [00:00:47.518]your devices to do.
- [00:00:49.695]The first thing I want to talk about is the interface.
- [00:00:52.363]What I loved about the iPads, from the get-go,
- [00:00:54.539]is the fact that it had this touch interface
- [00:00:56.524]that worked really really well, that responded to everything
- [00:00:59.686]you do.
- [00:01:00.519]You make things bigger, you make things smaller.
- [00:01:01.899]Everything with your hands, and that's a fantastic
- [00:01:05.722]interface, especially useful when you're working with
- [00:01:08.747]early childhood, and students with disabilities.
- [00:01:11.738]It gives them another way to access information
- [00:01:14.045]that isn't necessary connected to a keyboard.
- [00:01:17.256]That's great.
- [00:01:18.354]The other thing is, of course, working with siri,
- [00:01:20.828]and using the voice interface to enter text or to do
- [00:01:25.171]general operations on the device.
- [00:01:27.947]Again, a huge advantage to the iPad with multiple ways
- [00:01:32.797]you can input information.
- [00:01:34.035]However, chromebooks are fantastic, because they have
- [00:01:36.693]an attached keyboard.
- [00:01:38.106]You don't have to buy an extra keyboard.
- [00:01:40.154]You don't have to worry about it.
- [00:01:41.343]You don't have to connect it
- [00:01:42.607]with bluetooth or anything else.
- [00:01:44.573]So, you do retain that ability to have keyboard.
- [00:01:49.141]Keyboarding skills are important for kids to get,
- [00:01:51.766]and to get fluent with,
- [00:01:53.330]and if they're doing a significant amount of composing
- [00:01:56.248]on the computer, the keyboard seems to be a choice
- [00:01:59.563]that a lot of people are making.
- [00:02:01.154]That's one difference.
- [00:02:03.363]On the interface, in early childhood I would definitely go
- [00:02:06.142]with iPads all the way to third of fourth grade,
- [00:02:08.695]but as kids get older and they need to do more composing
- [00:02:11.999]a keyboard may be something you want to consider,
- [00:02:14.625]and again you can get keyboards for the iPads,
- [00:02:16.640]and they will work.
- [00:02:18.019]From a price perspective chromebooks are cheaper.
- [00:02:21.514]I do want to make sure that
- [00:02:24.624]when we talk about a price,
- [00:02:27.056]we talk about not just about the price per unit,
- [00:02:30.086]but also how long units will last.
- [00:02:31.837]I don't think we have enough information yet
- [00:02:33.679]about chromebooks, at least I don't anymore.
- [00:02:36.227]What I do know is iPads actually prove themselves a lot
- [00:02:39.114]sturdier, and lasting a lot longer than anybody expected,
- [00:02:42.885]and a life expectancy of about four years is perfectly
- [00:02:46.500]fine.
- [00:02:47.333]I have iPads that old, and they're working.
- [00:02:49.474]We use them in classrooms, and they're working.
- [00:02:51.537]The only iPad that really didn't work for quite that long
- [00:02:54.411]was the iPad one, because it didn't have a camera,
- [00:02:56.536]and that was a huge jump in productivity.
- [00:02:59.264]But, you can have them for a very long time,
- [00:03:02.459]so that's a huge advantage.
- [00:03:05.239]Again, we don't know about the chromebooks,
- [00:03:06.938]so that, I think, is an advantage for the iPads right now,
- [00:03:10.816]and again, when you consider the price you have to consider
- [00:03:13.416]also how long will you be able to use them.
- [00:03:16.000]In accessibility,
- [00:03:17.270]really important accessibility, especially for students
- [00:03:19.490]with disabilities or students that speak other languages,
- [00:03:22.526]and both devices have some options,
- [00:03:25.654]but the built in options in the iPads are considerably
- [00:03:29.387]better.
- [00:03:30.845]The reading
- [00:03:32.778]everything that's on screen,
- [00:03:34.489]the ability to do it with voice,
- [00:03:36.118]the ability to use the accessibility options,
- [00:03:40.571]differentiating the touch interface,
- [00:03:43.503]and all of that are fantastic on the iPads.
- [00:03:45.821]If you don't know all of this, we did have an older
- [00:03:48.999]episode that talked about all the accessibility options
- [00:03:51.508]on the iPad, so definitely go and look at that,
- [00:03:54.132]but I think there's a definite advantage to the iPads
- [00:03:56.608]when working with students with disabilities.
- [00:03:59.742]The next thing I want to talk about is the availability
- [00:04:02.839]of apps.
- [00:04:04.172]Here, it really depends on what you want to do.
- [00:04:06.455]This is a definite advantage to the iPads and to the apple
- [00:04:10.468]ecosystem when you talk about apps.
- [00:04:12.742]There's just more apps, they work better,
- [00:04:15.934]and there's just more history behind them,
- [00:04:18.931]and there's just a huge diversity of apps
- [00:04:21.488]in education.
- [00:04:22.321]If you look at our old iPad in the classroom,
- [00:04:24.700]and videos you see just how many are out there,
- [00:04:28.155]and we keep previewing new ones.
- [00:04:29.628]There's a huge advantage to the iPads with educational apps.
- [00:04:32.977]However, Google does offer all of the Google apps
- [00:04:36.820]for education which are really really nice.
- [00:04:38.866]They offer a fantastic platform.
- [00:04:40.905]Do they work on the iPads?
- [00:04:42.041]Yes, but they will work better on the chromebooks,
- [00:04:44.521]so you do have to consider that.
- [00:04:46.390]Especially things like Google Earth,
- [00:04:48.397]will work a lot better on a computer or a chromebook
- [00:04:53.474]than it does on the iPad.
- [00:04:54.756]It works on the iPad, and I love it on the iPad,
- [00:04:57.492]but it does function a little bit better on a chromebook
- [00:05:01.721]or a computer.
- [00:05:02.575]That's something to consider.
- [00:05:03.593]I love Google Earth, so for me that's something that's
- [00:05:05.413]really important.
- [00:05:06.508]You have to consider how much you're attached to Google
- [00:05:09.329]apps for education.
- [00:05:10.348]That might swing you one way or the other.
- [00:05:12.519]The other advantage that Google has is in login,
- [00:05:17.593]so login for Google is one login everything is open to you,
- [00:05:22.512]and that's really powerful, and kids don't have to remember
- [00:05:24.923]multiple passwords.
- [00:05:26.872]That's powerful.
- [00:05:27.870]On the iPad you would usually need a few other logins
- [00:05:31.713]to specific apps or to the apple ecosystem itself,
- [00:05:35.195]and then you would need one for Google
- [00:05:37.509]if you're participating in Google apps for education.
- [00:05:40.919]That's definitely an advantage to the chromebook.
- [00:05:43.699]From a security perspective,
- [00:05:45.998]the Google universe is one thing,
- [00:05:48.456]but we do know that apple is actually a lot more secure
- [00:05:51.566]for a variety of reasons.
- [00:05:52.831]Their ecosystem is a lot closer.
- [00:05:54.579]Which makes everything that happens on it a lot more
- [00:05:57.006]protected from a privacy perspective.
- [00:05:59.098]That's something to consider as well.
- [00:06:01.847]Finally, mobility and projection.
- [00:06:05.720]Two devices, very very different.
- [00:06:07.978]You can take your chromebook anywhere,
- [00:06:09.749]but you always need the flat surface,
- [00:06:11.452]and it really calls for a table.
- [00:06:13.316]Whereas, iPads are truly mobile.
- [00:06:15.408]You can take them anywhere.
- [00:06:16.395]You can take pictures with them.
- [00:06:17.471]You can take them to a visit to the zoo.
- [00:06:19.077]You can take them outside to an outside classroom,
- [00:06:21.825]and they're just as useful as they are in the classroom.
- [00:06:24.520]Here in mobility, you really have to think,
- [00:06:26.812]is this something I want kids to use only at home
- [00:06:29.237]and then in the classroom, then the chromebook
- [00:06:31.259]would be fine.
- [00:06:32.092]I want them to be mobile and collect data in different ways,
- [00:06:34.581]then you definitely want to go with something like the iPad
- [00:06:36.867]that can leave and come back,
- [00:06:39.182]and they can move between classrooms with very little
- [00:06:42.460]problems with it.
- [00:06:43.696]Wireless projection, right now works a lot better
- [00:06:46.363]in the apple ecosystem through apple Tvs,
- [00:06:48.972]and does not really work.
- [00:06:50.558]You can wire any of the chromebooks,
- [00:06:54.354]but they don't just interface with projection device
- [00:06:57.444]in the classroom.
- [00:06:58.482]It's probably gonna come soon, but we're not there yet.
- [00:07:02.147]The bottom line is that it really depends on what you
- [00:07:05.970]want your devices to do.
- [00:07:07.201]If you want true mobility, the security, and all of the apps
- [00:07:10.600]you definitely go with the iPads if you're working with
- [00:07:13.152]early childhood all the way to third grade,
- [00:07:15.317]I would say the iPads have a huge advantage.
- [00:07:17.363]Once you cross that boundary, or if you're really imagining
- [00:07:20.591]just sit work whether at home or at school,
- [00:07:23.369]you definitely want to think about the chromebooks.
- [00:07:26.760]This is our take on iPads versus chromebook,
- [00:07:30.150]and I'll see you next time
- [00:07:31.622]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
