- [00:00:07.620]Well like many people
- [00:00:09.337]who are drawn to the profession,
- [00:00:10.933]I had some family members
- [00:00:14.046]with communication disorders,
- [00:00:16.089]and that first piqued my interest.
- [00:00:18.690]Um, and I just wanted to be involved
- [00:00:20.748]in a helping profession
- [00:00:23.968]that involved working very closely with people
- [00:00:26.827]to help improve the quality of their lives.
- [00:00:33.458]First and foremost, has been the opportunity
- [00:00:36.043]to work with students.
- [00:00:39.376]It's a great privilege to play a role
- [00:00:42.121]in helping to develop the next generation
- [00:00:46.994]of speech-language pathologists.
- [00:00:49.247]Our students are highly motivated, very bright
- [00:00:52.774]and passionate about their work,
- [00:00:54.988]and getting to play a significant role
- [00:00:59.017]in their pre-professional development has
- [00:01:02.858]helped challenge me and keep me going
- [00:01:05.170]all the time too.
- [00:01:10.599]I guess it would be, maybe one piece of advice,
- [00:01:14.771]is to just be open
- [00:01:18.548]to change, which is inevitable.
- [00:01:23.102]To embrace change,
- [00:01:25.779]and to always keep in mind
- [00:01:33.939]the greater good, and obviously we have
- [00:01:37.489]our own passions and our own interests,
- [00:01:40.035]but sometimes those things need to be set aside
- [00:01:42.995]for something bigger than ourselves.
- [00:01:46.414]So I think just to, to be very open to this
- [00:01:50.122]rich and diverse learning community
- [00:01:53.117]called the university.
- [00:01:58.805](Laughs) Oh, again, I try to
- [00:02:02.706]embrace all new things in my life
- [00:02:05.501]with no expectations, but just to
- [00:02:08.271]live in the moment
- [00:02:10.406]and to savor it.
- [00:02:13.707]I guess what I'm most looking forward to about
- [00:02:16.900]retirement - I put retirement in quotes -
- [00:02:22.773]is being able to just reduce the pace,
- [00:02:27.411]to slow the pace of the activities in my life a bit
- [00:02:30.865]so that qualitatively I can derive
- [00:02:32.459]more from those experiences,
- [00:02:37.286]and absolutely the opportunity to get to
- [00:02:40.086]spend more time with my family,
- [00:02:42.893]those who are nearest and dearest to me.
- [00:02:49.469]Well I would hope that my legacy
- [00:02:52.147]is that of being highly professional
- [00:02:57.468]and having passion for my work.
- [00:03:02.786]Not just the technical aspects
- [00:03:05.499]of being a speech-language pathologist,
- [00:03:07.733]like knowing the science and technology,
- [00:03:12.197]and all of the specialized techniques and skills
- [00:03:14.427]that are part of diagnostics and treatment.
- [00:03:18.130]But just also, that affective realm
- [00:03:21.839]of professional practice,
- [00:03:24.388]and training and preparing students
- [00:03:29.133]to be compassionate providers of our services,
- [00:03:33.506]and have a real focus on patient-centered care
- [00:03:38.377]and, along with that,
- [00:03:40.795]always keeping in mind
- [00:03:42.742]their own self-care as professionals.
- [00:03:49.066]There are lots of things to miss
- [00:03:51.316]about this department
- [00:03:52.643]and, specifically, about the speech and language program.
- [00:03:55.664]I will miss the students.
- [00:03:58.428]I will miss working with the children and families
- [00:04:03.702]that I've had the opportunity to work with
- [00:04:06.376]throughout the years.
- [00:04:09.232]I'll miss some of the challenging projects,
- [00:04:13.172]and my colleagues.
- [00:04:16.300]But, I know, I think in moving on in my life,
- [00:04:19.114]it is meant in no way
- [00:04:22.821]to diminish the important work that's being done here
- [00:04:27.004]in SECD.
- [00:04:28.666]I feel like I've made some very valuable contributions
- [00:04:32.471]to the program, to help strengthen it,
- [00:04:35.145]and my colleagues are well-positioned
- [00:04:38.252]to carry on that legacy.
