- [00:00:00.444]Coming up, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:01.977]teacher resources.
- [00:00:04.136](upbeat techno)
- [00:00:17.528]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin, this is Mobile Learning
- [00:00:20.019]in the Classroom, from Tech Edge, and today I want
- [00:00:22.109]to talk about some teacher resources.
- [00:00:24.129]So this is summer time, and this is a good time
- [00:00:25.888]for teachers to start preparing for the next year,
- [00:00:28.761]looking at different things, before things get
- [00:00:30.995]frantic towards the second half of August.
- [00:00:33.468]And I really thought that this was also a great
- [00:00:36.551]occasion because Amazon just launched their
- [00:00:39.790]Amazon Inspire, which is a website that will give
- [00:00:43.935]free access, at least at the beginning, to teachers
- [00:00:47.000]anywhere.
- [00:00:48.010]You just have to register, and the registration page
- [00:00:49.838]is up on the screen.
- [00:00:51.266]And if you're registered you will get access and right now
- [00:00:54.035]it's free, it'll be lesson plans, quizzes, platforms,
- [00:00:57.745]lots of interesting things.
- [00:00:59.904]A community on top of that, so this is a great opportunity
- [00:01:03.945]to get in and seeing what people are doing.
- [00:01:06.992]And I truly believe that the switch to digital content
- [00:01:11.259]for teachers and for kids is here, and we're gonna
- [00:01:14.550]see more and more of it, and things that are available
- [00:01:17.232]for free are great to try out, and I actually think
- [00:01:19.601]that some of them need to stay free, but I'll get
- [00:01:21.603]to that a little bit later.
- [00:01:23.954]So, Amazon Inspire, we don't really know everything that's
- [00:01:26.149]in it, because you have to have an access code
- [00:01:28.082]and it takes a few weeks, but it's definitely worth
- [00:01:29.701]checking out, and in the summer, when you have a few
- [00:01:32.418]minutes, it's definitely gonna work out.
- [00:01:35.595]The next one that we can talk about is Apple,
- [00:01:40.011]Apple has a lot of services, lesson plans, and resources
- [00:01:44.295]for teachers, especially teachers that are using Apple
- [00:01:46.594]products, that's obviously there.
- [00:01:49.432]Although, even if you're not using Apple products,
- [00:01:51.470]there's quite a bit that you can do within their framework.
- [00:01:54.552]But iPad teachers, if you have, like I do,
- [00:02:00.091]an Apple laptop, those are great resources that will really
- [00:02:04.219]help you make the most out of what you have on
- [00:02:08.927]Apple devices, and there's also the connection that they've
- [00:02:13.789]made with the ConnectED initiative from the federal
- [00:02:17.934]government, so you can read about that,
- [00:02:20.180]and learn what you can do.
- [00:02:22.688]If we mention those two, we have to mention a third one,
- [00:02:25.770]and that is Microsoft has resources and has a community
- [00:02:30.020]of educators and you can see that they've got regular
- [00:02:33.520]lesson plans that are connected obviously to the
- [00:02:35.888]Microsoft products that are ubiquitous, one would say still,
- [00:02:39.389]Skype lessons, and virtual field trips.
- [00:02:43.081]All three are fantastic ways to use technology
- [00:02:45.745]in the classroom, connect kids to the global environment,
- [00:02:49.716]and help them express themselves in multiple ways,
- [00:02:52.642]and a few weeks ago, we did, for example, a presentation
- [00:02:55.985]about Microsoft Sway, which is a way to really
- [00:02:59.503]represent learning in a visual way,
- [00:03:02.498]with the addition of text, so that's one thing that
- [00:03:04.954]you will find here, and you can join for free.
- [00:03:07.305]So Microsoft is doing something very similar.
- [00:03:09.882]My personal preference is working actually with
- [00:03:12.303]organizations that are not for profit, and are not
- [00:03:15.333]charging you, because I think that's the opportunity
- [00:03:17.336]for us as teachers, first of all, to stake a claim
- [00:03:20.436]on having free, publicly available information,
- [00:03:25.329]and it's not tied to any product, so it can apply
- [00:03:28.743]no matter what you have, and it does make us as a
- [00:03:31.564]community of teachers, a community of professionals,
- [00:03:34.525]richer and the two favorite places to go, and you
- [00:03:38.600]can do that from any device, because these are
- [00:03:40.533]websites, as are the rest.
- [00:03:42.640]Are one, Edutopia, the organization that came out of
- [00:03:46.558]The George Lucas Foundation, and they've got a lot of
- [00:03:49.937]videos, blogs, lesson plans, and a lot of materials
- [00:03:53.803]if you're interested in technology, integration
- [00:03:55.980]21st century learning, problem based learning,
- [00:04:00.229]engineering education, all of the stem topics have
- [00:04:03.503]come there, so you get very rich conversation,
- [00:04:06.411]you get colleagues to talk to, you get to read blogs
- [00:04:09.964]of teachers that are doing it in the field, and you
- [00:04:12.036]get the experts, so Edutopia is a fantastic source
- [00:04:15.101]for all of that information.
- [00:04:18.376]I love their mini
- [00:04:20.505]movie festivals that choose a topic,
- [00:04:22.961]for example, classroom environment, and then have six or
- [00:04:25.225]seven different videos about how to organize classrooms,
- [00:04:28.063]how different teachers are doing it, actually across
- [00:04:30.484]the world.
- [00:04:31.895]The next one is Read Write Think.
- [00:04:33.776]Read Write Think is fantastic initiative from the
- [00:04:36.684]Literacy Research Association, I'm sorry, the
- [00:04:40.445]International Literacy Association, and NCTE,
- [00:04:43.667]and they've put together lots of professional
- [00:04:46.593]development sources, lesson plans, and apps,
- [00:04:50.424]and web apps, that all allow you to present top
- [00:04:55.509]level materials for your students to use things that
- [00:04:58.940]are printed in the journals from the societies,
- [00:05:02.232]and really have a fantastic way to do free professional
- [00:05:04.983]development with high quality materials that were vetted.
- [00:05:09.023]So, today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, we
- [00:05:11.287]talked about resources that can help you plan for
- [00:05:13.917]next year, and I'll see you next time on
- [00:05:16.042]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:05:20.047](upbeat techno)
