- [00:00:19.372]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge.
- [00:00:21.433]And today we're talking about Math Practice.
- [00:00:23.646]We're shooting this in the summer,
- [00:00:25.128]and we do know that kids lose some
- [00:00:27.384]of their ability in math over the summer
- [00:00:29.274]because very few kids actually practice
- [00:00:31.042]anything in math over the summer.
- [00:00:32.564]Kids tend to read, or at least some kids
- [00:00:35.127]read over the summer but do very, very little math.
- [00:00:38.079]So it is important to keep their mind limber
- [00:00:40.579]and wondering about these things and reminded
- [00:00:43.558]of all of these things they're doing in math.
- [00:00:45.985]And this time, I want to start
- [00:00:47.536]with two or three options that are
- [00:00:50.485]really for older students
- [00:00:52.282]and then talk about what we can do
- [00:00:54.214]with younger students because we often talk
- [00:00:56.091]about the younger students.
- [00:00:57.457]So the first thing is Brilliant.org.
- [00:01:00.272]Brilliant.org is a fantastic website
- [00:01:02.613]with lots of examples of problems
- [00:01:04.785]at the higher level in math and science
- [00:01:07.045]but we're going to focus on the math.
- [00:01:08.610]They'll also send you an email on a regular basis
- [00:01:11.027]reminding you that they're there,
- [00:01:12.915]that there's a problem for the day
- [00:01:14.451]and if you'd like to solve it, you can go there.
- [00:01:15.874]This is the problem of the day today,
- [00:01:17.937]six six to the six.
- [00:01:19.482]And you can see that this is a quick thinking problem.
- [00:01:23.745]You do the math.
- [00:01:24.763]You mark what you think.
- [00:01:26.130]And you get if it's correct or not.
- [00:01:28.501]And you also can get an explanation and discussion.
- [00:01:33.370]So if I want to continue, you can do a discussion.
- [00:01:36.248]Here's another example.
- [00:01:37.509]This is an exercise that will allow you
- [00:01:40.778]to think about the problem.
- [00:01:42.319]And the idea here is, and you see,
- [00:01:44.138]it's to not use a calculator.
- [00:01:46.759]So you have to think about the strategy
- [00:01:48.631]of how do you actually do this effectively.
- [00:01:54.016]And then let's say you submit an answer.
- [00:01:57.838]And I got the answer correct
- [00:02:00.531]and 51% of people, so it gives you a sense
- [00:02:03.004]of what the public is doing.
- [00:02:04.543]And you can see that these are actually submitted.
- [00:02:06.378]If you look here on the bottom, it's actually submitted
- [00:02:09.195]by different people around the world.
- [00:02:10.611]And if you want to discuss solutions,
- [00:02:12.944]you can go and see how other people thought about this
- [00:02:16.455]and the more formal way to think about this.
- [00:02:21.234]And this is from the person who actually wrote it.
- [00:02:24.763]So there's kind of an ongoing wiki
- [00:02:26.882]with different people talking about
- [00:02:28.828]how do you solve this, how did they solve this,
- [00:02:31.036]and all of that.
- [00:02:32.172]So this is great, but you can actually do
- [00:02:34.322]some more advanced practice.
- [00:02:36.471]So this is algebra level one
- [00:02:38.991]and you can continue to see other problems
- [00:02:41.751]or you can actually go back to something
- [00:02:45.320]that you've started.
- [00:02:46.872]So I've started a few things in algebra, you can see.
- [00:02:49.782]You've got warm-ups.
- [00:02:50.846]You've got solving equations.
- [00:02:52.008]What I love about this is these are really cool problems.
- [00:02:56.611]There's a sense that there's a public behind it,
- [00:03:00.047]and lots of people are interacting here.
- [00:03:02.595]And you can work on something that you're good at
- [00:03:04.552]and you just want to get more proficiency
- [00:03:06.591]or on things that you're not sure about
- [00:03:08.490]and you want to move forward.
- [00:03:10.275]And it can actually take you through the steps.
- [00:03:12.391]It is important to register
- [00:03:13.722]although you can do this without registering.
- [00:03:15.376]It is important to register
- [00:03:16.524]because they'll remember where you are
- [00:03:18.362]and what your next task can be.
- [00:03:20.056]This great for high school students, I would argue,
- [00:03:22.309]that want to do some work and get better.
- [00:03:24.797]It's great for middle school students
- [00:03:26.730]who are intrigued by math, want to play around,
- [00:03:29.319]and want to try some problems and learn some new things.
- [00:03:32.929]The other place to go online that I think is great
- [00:03:36.200]and there's an app for that on different devices
- [00:03:38.616]but you can just use your browser on a Chromebook
- [00:03:41.507]or on another kind of computer,
- [00:03:43.327]and this is Khan Academy.
- [00:03:45.071]And Khan Academy has, again, lots of levels
- [00:03:47.648]all the way from elementary
- [00:03:49.249]into actually college level work.
- [00:03:52.912]And all of them have the short videos
- [00:03:55.367]that walk you through problems.
- [00:03:57.411]What I love about this is you can also log in.
- [00:04:00.497]Again, the sense of community and questions and answers
- [00:04:04.768]that help everybody understand the little details.
- [00:04:08.028]For example, if you don't know the probability of H,
- [00:04:12.903]they explain exactly what it means.
- [00:04:14.804]It's the probability of heads.
- [00:04:17.251]So even if you're not familiar with the notation,
- [00:04:19.391]lots of questions and answers.
- [00:04:21.018]And if you register to the site,
- [00:04:22.847]you can also advance in levels
- [00:04:26.066]and get more and more skills
- [00:04:28.189]while the site logs your progress
- [00:04:30.179]which is really important.
- [00:04:31.405]Some school districts are using it.
- [00:04:33.019]One of the things they've added
- [00:04:34.396]which is great is the transcript
- [00:04:36.451]because then if the speaking is not clear
- [00:04:38.766]or if you or the student using it
- [00:04:43.035]are a little bit hard of hearing or a lot,
- [00:04:46.753]you can use the transcript and still get
- [00:04:49.329]the essence and the message from that video.
- [00:04:52.043]So this is really, really great
- [00:04:53.755]and you can see that there's a path to that unit.
- [00:04:56.675]So this is a unit on basic probability.
- [00:04:58.344]And there's a series of videos,
- [00:05:00.423]so you can watch the video
- [00:05:01.868]and then you can do some of the practice exercises
- [00:05:04.952]on probability and statistics in a way
- [00:05:06.932]that allows you to test yourself
- [00:05:08.463]and to make sure that you're making progress.
- [00:05:10.027]So this is Khan Academy, great tool.
- [00:05:12.543]Now, switching to my iPad,
- [00:05:15.837]I want to share a few things.
- [00:05:17.770]And some of these are things that I have shown before.
- [00:05:21.069]Some of them are not.
- [00:05:22.449]But the first one that I want to talk about
- [00:05:26.150]is Math Duel.
- [00:05:28.281]Math Duel is an app that allows two students
- [00:05:31.325]to play against each other
- [00:05:35.259]competing for skills.
- [00:05:37.199]You can see, here are exercises,
- [00:05:39.678]and this is just addition.
- [00:05:41.447]But you can change the setting
- [00:05:43.048]and you can see you can do addition, subtraction,
- [00:05:44.870]multiplication, and division.
- [00:05:46.513]And you can make it much more complicated
- [00:05:49.040]so the students can have numbers up to 31
- [00:05:54.363]and two terms or three terms
- [00:05:57.563]which makes it harder.
- [00:05:59.330]You can change the timer, etc.
- [00:06:01.471]You can actually adjust the settings differently
- [00:06:03.587]for each one of the students
- [00:06:04.806]so they're each working on their own level of problem
- [00:06:09.544]despite the fact that they're competing with each other.
- [00:06:12.309]So they're competing with each other
- [00:06:13.832]who gets it done first, but the level of problem
- [00:06:15.755]can be completely different
- [00:06:17.109]which means even if you have kids at different levels,
- [00:06:19.504]they can still play each other
- [00:06:21.217]and enjoy using Math Duel.
- [00:06:23.641]Great program, easy to use, and kids love
- [00:06:28.341]the competition aspect.
- [00:06:30.084]And teachers love the fact that we know
- [00:06:32.374]that they're actually practicing the things
- [00:06:34.821]they need to know.
- [00:06:36.046]The next one that I want to go to is called Dragon Box.
- [00:06:39.894]And Dragon Box is an early
- [00:06:43.555]approach to algebra.
- [00:06:47.045]And the idea is to use game mechanics
- [00:06:50.641]to start explaining the idea of working with equations
- [00:06:54.596]and solving for the things you don't know.
- [00:06:57.494]So you can start, and this is chapter one.
- [00:07:00.329]You can see that I've done some of it.
- [00:07:02.335]And we can see.
- [00:07:03.386]And it walks you, just like everything else,
- [00:07:06.080]it walks you carefully to see the thing
- [00:07:07.983]you want to discover is what is the box.
- [00:07:10.732]So, for example, if you have two terms
- [00:07:12.521]that are the same, they take each other out.
- [00:07:14.704]So that's it, and you have two things
- [00:07:16.538]that are the same, plus and minus,
- [00:07:18.168]they cancel each other.
- [00:07:19.949]And so, now we know that the box equals
- [00:07:22.259]that fish structure.
- [00:07:23.907]And it also counts how many moves.
- [00:07:26.517]But it works in the beginning
- [00:07:28.448]through shapes and the polarity.
- [00:07:31.569]You saw the dark versus light
- [00:07:33.585]which eventually turns into plus and minus.
- [00:07:36.147]Then, as you move up the levels,
- [00:07:38.714]it actually goes to symbol-based
- [00:07:41.186]and to the way we are usually doing algebra
- [00:07:44.899]with X's and Y's and all of that.
- [00:07:46.989]But you can see how this is the process
- [00:07:50.462]that helps us understand and come
- [00:07:53.443]to realization of how algebra works.
- [00:07:55.560]And again, what I love about this over the summer is
- [00:07:57.826]it is game-based, and therefore kids want
- [00:08:00.278]to go through the levels.
- [00:08:01.725]What I would suggest is once in a while
- [00:08:03.604]to stop them and say, "Why did you do that?
- [00:08:06.043]"How does that, what does that tell you?
- [00:08:08.005]"What are you doing?"
- [00:08:09.017]Because you want that meta-cognitive level
- [00:08:10.927]to make sure that it will eventually connect back
- [00:08:14.034]to the ideas of algebra.
- [00:08:15.896]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:08:18.304]we talked about different apps that you can use
- [00:08:20.060]over the summer with young kids
- [00:08:21.436]or with older kids, pre-algebra and beyond,
- [00:08:24.143]to really focus in on new skills
- [00:08:26.874]or even practice older skills to make sure
- [00:08:29.205]that they're not losing ability over the summer
- [00:08:31.767]or even it's during the year,
- [00:08:34.001]that they're gaining and they're advancing
- [00:08:35.889]at their own pace.
