- [00:00:09.720]The Explore Center is the academic home
- [00:00:11.476]for students who are undecided on majors,
- [00:00:13.678]and also students who are pre-professional,
- [00:00:15.802]thinking about pre-health, or pre-law.
- [00:00:17.602]So, the Explore Center is located
- [00:00:19.028]in Love Library south in the heart of campus,
- [00:00:20.755]and we share space with our first-year experience,
- [00:00:23.244]and transitions programs office,
- [00:00:24.958]which is wonderful, because students are able to use both.
- [00:00:27.899]So, definitely meeting with students
- [00:00:29.165]one on one is the biggest way we help out students.
- [00:00:31.087]Getting to know each of you as individuals.
- [00:00:33.250]So, every student is assigned
- [00:00:34.675]an academic advisor in our office,
- [00:00:36.425]and that advisor is really their person.
- [00:00:38.679]They are there to help that student
- [00:00:40.110]in whatever way the student needs.
- [00:00:42.271]Our students explore majors both inside and outside
- [00:00:44.717]of the classroom.
- [00:00:46.223]Explore Center advisors help students find
- [00:00:48.103]a variety of classes that allow them to explore majors
- [00:00:50.720]while meeting degree requirements.
- [00:00:53.008]Students also explore majors through one on one
- [00:00:55.247]academic advising, and by engaging in major
- [00:00:57.091]exploration events.
- [00:00:58.895]When the student leaves the Explore
- [00:01:00.278]Center I think it is our hope is that you know a little bit
- [00:01:02.326]a little bit more about yourself.
- [00:01:03.872]That students are able to identify really what their
- [00:01:05.675]interest are, their skills are.
- [00:01:07.102]How that really ties into potential majors
- [00:01:08.652]and long-term goals after college.

- [00:01:16.715]When I first came to the university
- [00:01:19.166]I didn't know what to expect.
- [00:01:20.591]I wanted to be a public speaker,
- [00:01:22.790]and I wanted to do personal training,
- [00:01:24.712]and I wanted to be a cartoonist,
- [00:01:26.344]but there's no streamline process for that.
- [00:01:28.672]So, the Explore Center was able to put me in places
- [00:01:31.164]where I could fulfill my requirements to graduate
- [00:01:34.278]while still finding out what I wanted to do.
- [00:01:37.427]I worked with Carmen as my advisor.
- [00:01:39.915]She's awesome, and we figured out
- [00:01:42.485]we might need to double-major here.
- [00:01:45.504]We might need to find multiple minors,
- [00:01:48.155]and if it wasn't for the Explore Center
- [00:01:49.749]I would have to blind pick and choose,
- [00:01:51.381]and I probably wouldn't be happy with the major I'm in.
- [00:01:55.503]Coming into the university I
- [00:01:57.349]definitely was nervous.
- [00:01:58.743]I'm a first-generation college student,
- [00:02:00.416]so I really didn't know what to expect.
- [00:02:02.784]The most important thing the Explore Center has provided me
- [00:02:05.362]with is definitely having someone review all the documents
- [00:02:08.745]that I have to send into a law school.
- [00:02:10.741]They know what law schools are looking for,
- [00:02:12.518]and what I should and shouldn't be doing.
- [00:02:14.310]So, definitely having someone in my corner.
- [00:02:16.630]Without the Explore Center I would be very lost.
- [00:02:19.977]I'm glad that I had someone there telling me what I needed
- [00:02:22.591]to do every step of the way.
- [00:02:24.428]I hope that students feel when they leave the
- [00:02:26.227]Explore Center that they have some type of goal,
- [00:02:28.151]or path developed, and that they feel they have
- [00:02:30.190]a person on campus who really supports them,
- [00:02:32.484]and is in their corner, and is encouraging them
- [00:02:34.569]with how they want to proceed with their academic
- [00:02:37.058]and career goals.
- [00:02:38.322]Every single advisor,
- [00:02:40.122]their goal is to help students out,
- [00:02:42.028]and they're truly passionate about it,
- [00:02:43.539]and it's kind of this wonderful experience
- [00:02:45.091]where's everybody's end game is helping students succeed;
- [00:02:47.858]helping students find their passion.
- [00:02:49.692]It's not going to be an easy process always,
- [00:02:51.695]but the Explore Center helps make it easier on you.
- [00:02:54.345]To have somebody there with you the whole time is;
- [00:02:56.920]it's invaluable, and the Explore Center has been
- [00:02:59.294]that invaluable to me.
