- [00:00:00.483]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.664]virtual travel.
- [00:00:04.115](upbeat electronic music)
- [00:00:17.521]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:19.169]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:21.929]from Tech Edge and today we're talking about virtual travel.
- [00:00:24.984]And it's summer right now, at least for us.
- [00:00:27.873]You may be watching it at a different time,
- [00:00:29.937]but I think it's always relevant.
- [00:00:31.417]We travel in summer, but sometimes we can travel
- [00:00:33.609]everywhere we want or we want to plan
- [00:00:35.824]about the places we want to go to.
- [00:00:37.753]It's definitely worthwhile doing with kids
- [00:00:40.089]because they can be exposed to new places
- [00:00:42.568]and new countries whether you can go there or not.
- [00:00:45.800]So my favorite place to go, which I've never gone to,
- [00:00:49.393]so virtual travel is it for me
- [00:00:51.409]is Turkey and especially Istanbul
- [00:00:53.185]so I'm going to show you a few ways
- [00:00:55.617]that you can interact with
- [00:00:59.476]travel in a way
- [00:01:01.301]that helps you see that place,
- [00:01:02.893]helps you learn about that place,
- [00:01:04.333]and help you experience that place, at least a little bit.
- [00:01:07.549]So I want to start with an app on my iPad
- [00:01:10.605]called The Ottoman Empire and the Ottoman Empire was
- [00:01:14.921]the foundation for modern Turkey so that would allow us
- [00:01:18.628]to explore the history of the place, at least in the few,
- [00:01:22.769]in the 700 years,
- [00:01:26.173]and you can see that
- [00:01:27.207]there's a general introduction that gives you a map
- [00:01:29.654]and shows you where the Ottoman Empire was
- [00:01:31.642]and gives you a little bit of text.
- [00:01:33.030]You can see that the text is relatively controllable.
- [00:01:36.749]It's not a huge amount.
- [00:01:39.616]And then as you navigate this,
- [00:01:41.544]you can hear about history, Ottoman law,
- [00:01:44.120]the military of the Ottoman Empire,
- [00:01:47.025]and you can see that there are features here
- [00:01:49.440]that are unlocked and locked
- [00:01:51.096]so you can use the free features if you'd like
- [00:01:53.728]or if you'd like to have
- [00:01:57.693]features that are hidden,
- [00:01:59.645]you have to pay for it and that's part of the deal
- [00:02:03.919]with things like that and so here's for example
- [00:02:07.358]about the name of the Ottoman Empire
- [00:02:09.165]which is based on the name of this man,
- [00:02:11.486]the founder of the empire
- [00:02:13.937]and you can see early findings from there
- [00:02:16.077]so it's a very rich app,
- [00:02:18.046]even if you don't pay for extra stuff.
- [00:02:20.280]Lots of great images are included.
- [00:02:25.322]For example, here and
- [00:02:28.458]from different sections in the text
- [00:02:31.224]so this is the Ottoman Empire, a great introduction.
- [00:02:34.346]Another app that gives you a sense of the place
- [00:02:37.096]is Istanbul Photos and Videos.
- [00:02:39.599]And this is really exactly what it says.
- [00:02:41.688]It's a collection of photos and videos
- [00:02:44.161]from the city of Istanbul
- [00:02:46.520]and you can log in and get a sense of the place
- [00:02:50.353]so that's another one.
- [00:02:51.784]I like using City Guide.
- [00:02:53.145]City Guides are great.
- [00:02:54.442]There are multiple cities.
- [00:02:55.827]You can use different languages to read it in.
- [00:02:57.844]Obviously, I will use English.
- [00:03:02.688]And you can see there's About Istanbul.
- [00:03:04.791]There's a subway system so if you want kids to try
- [00:03:07.767]and navigate and see how they would get
- [00:03:09.615]from point A to point B, that's great.
- [00:03:12.741]This is one of my favorite sections.
- [00:03:15.957]It's a section about foods
- [00:03:19.408]and you can see the different foods and learn about them
- [00:03:22.320]so there's a picture, there's the origin,
- [00:03:25.488]and a little bit of text about it, where did they get.
- [00:03:28.223]The Ottoman Empire ruled over a majority
- [00:03:31.303]of the Mediterranean and a good part of the Balkans
- [00:03:33.801]at different times so they brought foods
- [00:03:35.887]from all over the empire
- [00:03:37.601]and this is what makes this an exciting place
- [00:03:40.570]from an eating perspective.
- [00:03:42.839]So you have access to a lot of information
- [00:03:45.495]about Istanbul in this case
- [00:03:47.095]and everything that its got to offer
- [00:03:49.723]and you can tour, you can see the interesting things
- [00:03:52.887]or think about the kind of foods
- [00:03:54.350]you would like to have if you had it
- [00:03:56.095]and you can even pick up a recipe.
- [00:03:59.008]So this is another app and of course,
- [00:04:02.039]if you are going to Turkey,
- [00:04:03.904]you need to know something about Turkish
- [00:04:06.151]so here's an app to teach basic Turkish
- [00:04:09.719]and you can pick up different words for different things
- [00:04:12.704]so let's try words for buildings
- [00:04:17.145]and you can see that you can create a study list
- [00:04:20.394]and then you can start studying the specific words
- [00:04:25.945]elcilik
- [00:04:28.432]and you can guess what it is
- [00:04:31.848]and you can click on museum and it's muze
- [00:04:34.961]and so you can start seeing those things
- [00:04:37.821]and you can also hear them.
- [00:04:42.616]So it can record you saying the words
- [00:04:44.441]and it can of course sound them out
- [00:04:47.993]so you can hear what it says if you don't know
- [00:04:51.250]to read Turkish, which most of us don't, I think.
- [00:04:54.394]So this is a great way to get access to some basic language.
- [00:04:58.912]Now using Chrome, we can do some other things
- [00:05:02.193]so I'm going to start with using Google Earth,
- [00:05:05.704]which Dan Hill is smiling because it's my favorite app ever.
- [00:05:10.322]And what I zoomed in on is
- [00:05:13.478]the Museum of Hagia Sophia,
- [00:05:15.588]which was a church and then turned into a mosque
- [00:05:19.269]and what I have done is I turned on 3D buildings
- [00:05:23.167]and 3D buildings are available here
- [00:05:25.416]so this is what it would look like
- [00:05:27.015]and of course you can navigate around
- [00:05:29.232]so I can get a better angle on seeing the whole thing.
- [00:05:33.210]I can zoom in and out.
- [00:05:34.912]I can get closer and I can also see
- [00:05:37.403]and you can see how many people posted pictures here
- [00:05:41.073]so I can see a picture that was taken right there
- [00:05:43.641]of the windows at the entry
- [00:05:47.662]or if I really want to, I can go here
- [00:05:52.487]to the side and drop me
- [00:05:54.948]in the street view
- [00:06:00.158]and that will bring us into the building
- [00:06:02.999]and again you can have access to pictures
- [00:06:05.461]inside the buildings and really allows you to see
- [00:06:09.532]to get a sense of the size,
- [00:06:11.269]a sense of the way it looks in reality,
- [00:06:14.636]but also the dimensions through this 3D building.
- [00:06:17.628]It's a great, great way to do that.
- [00:06:20.900]The other thing that you can do is
- [00:06:24.037]you can go and go to Google Cultural Institute
- [00:06:27.517]and Google Cultural Institute really concentrates
- [00:06:29.832]a lot of information from different museums and sights
- [00:06:32.303]around the world and this is the site about Istanbul
- [00:06:35.842]and you can see who are their partners there
- [00:06:38.728]so they've got, for example,
- [00:06:40.230]the Istanbul Research Institute.
- [00:06:42.879]They've got SALT, they've got the Pera Museum
- [00:06:45.105]so let's just click on the Pera Museum
- [00:06:47.552]and they have 247 different
- [00:06:51.184]items just from that museum
- [00:06:53.462]so you can explore things
- [00:06:55.464]like old photos of the area,
- [00:06:59.400]art of the area
- [00:07:01.067]and art that is actually shown in the museum
- [00:07:04.653]so this is Google Cultural Institute
- [00:07:06.980]and it's another way to get a sense of the culture
- [00:07:10.467]as it was in the past through the history,
- [00:07:12.726]but also the current modern art,
- [00:07:15.239]the modern art that is connected to the creation
- [00:07:17.292]of a modern Egypt and all of these aspects.
- [00:07:21.022]So it's really really exciting, lots of resources.
- [00:07:24.049]Kids can explore that place from multiple perspectives,
- [00:07:27.505]choose something they're interested in.
- [00:07:29.427]What has been very successful working with kids
- [00:07:31.685]is actually having them plan a day trip inside Istanbul,
- [00:07:36.427]which sights they would choose,
- [00:07:37.966]how they would get from point A to point B,
- [00:07:40.576]what do they expect to see there,
- [00:07:43.076]what is a little bit of the history
- [00:07:44.748]and geography of the place
- [00:07:46.227]and that can be a very, very rich experience.
- [00:07:48.989]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:07:51.557]we talked about taking virtual tours.
- [00:07:53.288]I gave an example of a place I really want to go to,
- [00:07:55.469]Istanbul in Turkey, but you can do this with almost
- [00:07:58.963]any place in the world because the information is out there
- [00:08:02.765]between Google Earth, different apps
- [00:08:05.020]and lots of other opportunities you can explore.
- [00:08:08.523]And I'll see you next time on
- [00:08:09.931]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:08:12.268](upbeat electronic music)
